There’s been some moving and shaking going on at USC. The Trojan women’s soccer team has been in the midst of a culture shift, but the dust

has settled. And the Women of Troy are now ready to shake things up in the soccer scene.

What was a young roster with a limited amount of senior leadership in 2012 is now a more experienced and supremely captained group of Trojans in 2013. The bright future to come began to flash late last season, as a tumultuous year began to find some stability at the tail end of Pac-12 play when USC went toe-to-to with its national ranked conference foes and capped the year with an overtime win over then-No. 2 UCLA. That was a long-awaited proof that the Trojans were finally carving their own path, and that the balance of power was finally tipping toward Troy.

Eight juniors and seniors and 10 sophomores return to provide that core of stability for the Women of Troy this year, joined by a load of 12 newcomers that USC head coach Ali Khosroshahin believes present a perfect fit into this new culture club of Trojans.

“It’s a completely different vibe since I’ve been here,” Khosroshahin said. “This is a year where the way we go about our business should be entrenched into the program. We know the type of player it takes to be successful, and at USC it takes a special type of kid. We have a team of believers. A team that wants to represent USC and will do anything to get that job done and accomplish the mission.”

Mission control is largely manned by USC’s eight upperclassmen this season. They’ve been in the trenches for the Trojans as the program took hits and rosters thinned due to injuries. The 2013 USC roster is five seniors strong this year, marking a changing of the guard that has brought some standout leadership to the forefront. A transfer last season, Jordan Marada not only was the Trojans’ top scorer in 2012, she has fit into USC’s veteran core like a charm, as she takes up her senior season as a Trojan alongside Autumn Altamirano, Haley Boysen, Mia Bruno and Elizabeth Eddy. There are three juniors on the list this year, but only Jessica Musmanno began her collegiate career at Troy. Alex Quincey and Caroline Stanley played their first seasons as Trojans last year, but, like Marada, they’ve taken a natural shine to Cardinal and Gold as they continue to be key forces in the USC game plan.

“The older ones have been doing a really good job of getting the younger ones acclimated. They’ve already done more things to educate the younger ones this year than we probably we have in the last three years,” Khosroshahin said. “I think as a whole they want it together. It’s been good that they’ve been able to spread out the responsibilities not only to the seniors, but juniors and sophomores. It’s all about team this year.”

For the USC sophomore class, freshman year is but a distant memory. The current group, which came into 2012 as a set of 10 new Trojans looking to make their mark. At the close of their first season, they accomplished

something that few freshmen classes had managed -- a dramatic win over rival UCLA, which was then ranked No. 2 in the nation. That was the confidence boost the young Trojans needed to charge them up for the next stage in their USC careers, and the 2013 class of sophomores are undoubtedly locked in for more success. Six of them are entering 2013 already with goals on their career count. Katie Johnson had three in 2012, joined by Marlee Carrillo, Erin Owen, Megan Borman, Jamie Fink and Whitney Pitalo with goal tallies last season.

USC played a program-record nine overtime games last year, going 2-4-3 in that span. What’s more, 13 games finished as one-goal decisions, of which the Trojans were on the losing end eight times. In Pac-12 play, all but three conference matches stretched into OT. Safe to say the name of the game this season will be to get the job done in the first 90 minutes, and the 2013 Trojans certainly have the balance, backbone and firepower to make it happen.

“When you have that many overtime games and one-goal games, and look at how many of these games we dominated until it fell apart, that’s attributed to other things than soccer. One of the things was chemistry,” Khosroshahin said. “Our chemistry was off, and this year the chemistry feels pretty special. We have a quality group of young women this year.”

USC welcomes 12 new Women of Troy to the turf for 2013. It’s a crew packed with talent and potential for immediate impact on the pitch. U.S Under-20 national teamers Mandy Freeman and Kayla Mills may be the headliners, but the 12-pack of new Trojans is clearly deep and versatile. Natalie Donaldson is the only transfer in the mix this season, as the California native comes back west from Auburn. The rest of the new crew are all freshmen -- a class near the size and with similarly diverse skills to last year’s group of now-seasoned newcomers. Khosroshahin’s confidence in his 2013 incoming group is already ironclad, as their addition to the roster has only intensified the chemistry of this 2013 Trojan roster.

“If a team doesn’t have a good rapport and good trust, it’s hard to fake it in a game,” Khosroshahin said. “The commitment level from everyone is very high. They’re focused. Their ideas of the game plan are already pretty advanced for this time of the year, so we’re excited to see where we can take it.”FORWARDS

Depth has been a luxury that loomed just out of reach of the Trojans the past few seasons. This year, however, USC is cashing in. Even with Jeanette Jimenez and Jensen Toner on the sidelines with injuries, every position is covered, with backup, and further backup for that backup. USC’s battalion of forwards make the Trojan front lines especially daunting for opponents. With 10 career goals accumulated in her previous three seasons at Troy, senior Elizabeth Eddy stands out as USC’s top gun on the attack. Sophomore Katie Johnson’s skill on the ball is undeniable, and she’ll again be a lock up front. A starting role is also in the cards for freshman Kayla Mills, whose speed and international experience as a member of

eason Outlook

McAlister FieldBeginning with the 1998 season, the USC women’s soccer team no longer had to share a practice field with the football team, as the Women of Troy received a field all their own. Thanks to a $150,000 donation from Hobart and Soni McAlister, a new field was built on the corner of 30th and Hoover. During the 2000 season, a permanent scoreboard was installed. USC boasts a 71-29-11 (.689) record at McAlister Field, with the 2002 season representing the first time that every regular-season home game was played at the facility. Before 2002, several games were held at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and the Trojans have played a few select games at the Coliseum as well in the past six years.

the U.S. Under-20 National Team has her prepped for impact as a Trojan. Another freshman with international experience is Tanya Samarzich, who has been competing for Mexico through the Under-17 and Under-20 levels and has also played on the full Mexican National Team. In addition to Eddy, more veteran experience comes from junior Jessica Musmanno, who has a nose for goal along with the strength to get there. Returners Heather Davis and Tamara Mejia, too, are tabbed for duty up front, along with exciting newcomers Savannah Levin, Rachel Smith, Natalie Donaldson and Natalie Gigg.

“We definitely have depth up front,” Khosroshahin said. “They’re very dynamic, and I think the depth is going to be a lot for teams to have to deal with.”MIDFIELD

The heart of the USC gameplan also happens to boast a powerful beat in the form of seasoned and skilled midfielders Jamie Fink, Jordan Marada and Haley Boysen. That trio provided eight goals and seven assists last season. Now a sophomore, Fink stands tall as the centering force in the midfield, with seniors Marada and Boysen providing further strength on the outside. There’s a depth charge in the middle as well. Alex Quincey, who was a quick fit in the midfield as a sophomore transfer last season, brings back her height and savvy, as does sophomore Megan Borman. Quincey and Borman combined for five goals last year in their first season as Trojans. Meanwhile, sophomore Dana Schwartz is in line for increased time in the midfield, and freshman Darya Fenton has midfield duties on her docket as well.

“We’ve got just as much depth in the midfield as we do up front, Khosroshahin said. “We almost feel like we could play one group on Friday and another group on Sunday. Going into this season, this is the first time in a long time that our healthy returners outnumber our incoming kids.”DEFENSE

In past seasons, the Trojan back line had felt almost like a revolving door as injuries peppered the lineup and new faces filled the gaps. For 2013, the USC defense has a shape and a stability that Khosroshahin feels good about. The Trojan defense won’t have to be piecemeal anymore. Senior Autumn Altamirano, who was called to defensive duties last season when injuries cut into the depth in the back, returns with her speed and savvy to a defender’s role. Fellow senior Mia Bruno is USC’s most veteran defender, boasting vision and experience as a defensive anchor. Sophomore Marlee Carrillo reprises her role in the center of the Trojan defense, from which she also manufactured five assists in her freshman season. The youth movement, too, is alive and well in the back to bring even more reliable depth to the defense. Under-20 National Team defender Mandy Freeman has a starting role in her near future as a freshman. Fellow freshmen Moriah Earley and Nosa Ogiamien are also athletic options for the Trojans, accompanied by Dominique Randle, who was sidelined last year by injury. Sophomore Erin Owen was a lock on defense for USC

last season, and the 6-1 Trojan returns to the defensive corps along with the speedy and versatile sophomore Whitney Pitalo. That crew will take a stand in front of USC’s goalkeeping unit, which led by junior Caroline Stanley, who logged 1,721 minutes of action in 18 appearances last year. She’s joined by freshman goalkeeper Ashylnn Ramos for 2013 to form a potent Trojan tagteam in goal.

“This team has been working really hard, but more importantly they’ve been working pretty smart,” Khosroshahin said. “The only thing we’re worried about it is executing our gameplan, efficiently executing our jobs on the field, and how well we work together. That’s it. That’s our focus.”

Ali Khosroshahin enters his seventh season at the helm of the USC women’s soccer program, having guided the Women of Troy to a National Championship in his first season and to NCAA appearances in four of the past six years. In 2007, Khosroshahin became the first coach to win the national title in his first season with his program, and accumulated a number of other firsts for himself and the Trojans. After leading USC to the first NCAA title for the program and for the Pac-10, Khosroshahin was named the National Coach of the Year by the NSCAA, SoccerBuzz and

Soccer America. Also named the SoccerBuzz West Region Coach of the Year, Khosroshahin had garnered a career-best win total with USC’s 20-3-2 overall record in 2007. In 2008, Khosroshahin (pronounced ho-SRO-sha-HEEN) guided the Trojans into the NCAA Tournament once again, reaching the NCAA Third Round and finishing with a 16-5-2 overall record. Khosroshahin’s 2009 and 2010 Trojans also reached the NCAA Tournament, appearing in the First Round in 2009 and the Second Round in 2010, where USC fell to eventual champion Notre Dame. His overall coaching career record now stands at 150-83-19 (.633) with a 74-43-13 (.619) mark in six seasons at USC. In his 12 seasons as a head coach, Khosroshahin’s teams have made a combined seven NCAA appearances, including USC’s four straight trips in his first four seasons at Troy. Khosroshahin also coaches in the Olympic Development Program as the assistant coach for the Cal South ‘96 born girls, which won the national championship in March 2013. In the summer of 2012, he saw three of his former players compete for their respective countries at the 2012 Women’s World Cup. U.S. Olympic gold-medalist Amy Rodriguez was a member of the World Cup champion Team USA squad, while Marlene Sandoval competed for Mexico and Karen Bardsley played for England. In summer 2008, Khosroshahin traveled to Africa to participate in workshops supporting the Sport for Social Change Initiative, which is working to establish a network for organizations promoting the development of girls soccer programs in Kenya. Also, as assistant coach of the Under-17 Mexican National Team, Khosroshahin was in Trinidad & Tobago to coach Mexico at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. Khosroshahin came to Troy after spending six years as the head women’s coach at Cal State Fullerton. While coaching the Titans, he was honored as the Big West Coach of the Year three times, as he guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Titans had winning seasons in each of Khoroshahin’s six years there (2001-2006). Khosroshahin recorded a number of milestones during his time at Cal State Fullerton after taking over a fledgling program that had posted winning records only twice in its previous eight-year history. He won 64.8% of his matches (76-40-6), including a 34-13-3 (71.0%) league mark. His 76 overall wins and 34 Big West victories were more than the school had totaled in either category before he took over. Before taking over at Cal State Fullerton, he was an assistant with the Titans’ women’s and men’s programs for four years (1997-2000). He began his coaching career in 1992 as the boys varsity head coach at Canyon High in Anaheim (Calif.), where he was the Century League Coach of the Year in 1993. He then was the girls varsity head coach at

San Marino (Calif.) High in 1994. He broke into the collegiate ranks in 1994, serving as a graduate assistant with the men’s team at his alma mater, Cal State Los Angeles. He then became a full-time women’s and men’s assistant there for three seasons (1995-97). Khosroshahin also has coached at the international level. He was an assistant with Mexico during the 1999 Women’s World Cup, was on the staff of Mexico’s U-19 Women’s National Program in 2004 and the U-20 squad in 2005 and helped the Mexican women’s team prepare for the 2004 Olympics. He also assisted during the U.S. Women’s Indoor Soccer Victory Tour following their 1999 Women’s World Cup title and even coached the U.S. National team during a match. Khosroshahin was a two-year (1989-90) letterman at Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Cal State Los Angeles for his final two seasons (1991-92). He played two years (1995-96) with the Standard Falcons and then 1997 with the Valley Eagles in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL). He has his “A” coaching license, with the U.S. Soccer Federation. Born Feb. 26, 1970, Khosroshahin received his bachelor’s degree in business administration (marketing management emphasis) from Cal State Los Angeles in 1994. He and his wife Allison reside in Los Angeles.

P.J. Woolridge enters his third season as assis-tant coach with USC women’s soccer. He came to Troy from the University of San Diego, and also spent eight seasons at Cal Poly.

Woolridge spent three seasons as an assistant at San Diego after serving as an assistant at Cal Poly for eight seasons. The Mustangs won four straight Big West championships during that time, and reached the NCAA Tournament five times. It was at Cal Poly that Woolridge and Khosroshahin first began their competitive coaching clashes, as Khosroshahin was at the helm of another Big West power, Cal State Fullerton.

During Woolridge’s three seasons at San Diego, he continued to face off with Khosroshahin’s teams at USC, and the Toreros made runs to the NCAA Tourna-

ment all three seasons that Woolridge was there. As a player, Woolridge was a four-year starter at Cal Poly, where he helped

lead the Mustangs to the 1995 Division I playoffs and also was a two-time first-team all-conference honoree. He still holds Cal Poly program records with career matches played (72) and started (72) as well as game-winning goals in a season. He is a 2000 graduate of Cal Poly with a degree in psychology.

Woolridge grew up in San Jose, Calif., and is a 1995 graduate of Leland High School, where he lettered four times in soccer as a midfielder and forward and served as team captain for two seasons. His four teams posted a combined 70-15-5 record and Woolridge was named All-City four times and All-Santa Clara County twice as he scored 55 goals and 68 assists in his prep career. He also was a two-time High School All-American (1994, 1995) and played on the Youth National Team in 1991 and 1993.

Woolridge and his wife Alli and daughter Rylan live in Long Beach.

Laura Janke enters her seventh season as as-sistant coach at USC. A previous assistant to and former player for Ali Khosroshahin at Cal State Ful-lerton, Janke’s responsibilities at Troy largely have involved working with the defense and goalkeep-ers — an aspect of the game with which she has a considerable amount of experience. Her work with USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen in 2007 helped push the Trojans to the 2007 NCAA Championship, as Olsen set a program record with 12 shutouts and was named a Honda Award finalist.

“Laura is the glue that keeps this program run-

ning,” head coach Ali Khosroshahin says of Janke. “She is well on her way to becoming an excellent head coach herself. Her work with the goalkeepers is truly under-appreciated by everyone on the outside, but we know what an im-pact she has with our keepers.”

As a player at Cal State Fullerton, Janke was a four-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Big West Conference selection. She holds school career records in goalkeeper victories (24), saves (234), shutouts (13) and minutes played (4,513) and set the Titans’ single-season shutouts record with six in her senior year. As a sophomore, she notched 99 saves to stand No. 2 all-time in single-season saves at CSF.

Janke graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and completed her master’s in kinesiology in 2006.

Trevor Mutch enters his third season as a volunteer as-sistant coach at USC. A competitive youth club coach for U-9 to U-17 levels for the past eight years, Mutch holds a USSF National C coaching license.

As a player, Mutch was an All-American at Claremont McKenna, where he also was a First-Team All-SCIAC player in each of his four years as a starter. During his time at Cla-remont McKenna, he set the school’s all-time scoring record with 80 career goals, which currently ranks him 11th in the

NCAA Div. III record books. Following his undergraduate studies, Trevor spent a year coach-ing soccer at Loyola College Preparatory before attending graduate school at Santa Clara. He became heavily involved in coaching youth club soccer while pursuing a dual JD/MBA program at Santa Clara University School of Law and Business, which he completed in March 2007.

Raised in La Cañada, Calif., Mutch attended St. Ignatius of Loyola College Preparatory in Los Angeles. During his senior year of high school, he led his team to the 1998 CIF Division I title and was named the CIF Division I Offensive Player of the Year. The school subsequently retired his #9 jersey.

Eloy Lopez is in his fourth season with the women’s soccer program and is cur-rently working to promote the program in the Trojan Family and strengthen alumni relations. He runs the team’s social media platforms and handles alumni relations.

Lopez has prior experience in promot-ing as student-officer for the “Orange Cur-tain” student cheering section for athletic

events at Cal State Fullerton. He also worked in Community Relations with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

As an athlete, he was three-year letter-winner in cross-country and track and field at El Rancho High School (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and went on to compete in at Cerritos College (Norwalk, Calif.).

Born in Bellflower, Calif., and raised in Pico Rivera, he earned his bach-elor’s degree in American Studies (2009) from Cal State Fullerton. Lo-pez is currently pursuing a master’s in educational counseling as USC’s Rossier School of Education.

Marihelen Tomer is in her first season as Director of Operations for USC women’s soccer. A legendary Trojan, Tomer scored the game-winning goal to claim the 2007 NCAA Championship for the Women of Troy as USC became the first Pac-12 team to win a women’s soccer national title.

A 2007 NCAA All-Tournament Team honoree, Tomer graduated from USC in 2009 with degrees in sociology and psychology. After redshirting her first season at Troy due to a knee injury, Tomer came back strong and finished her USC career not only as a na-tional champion, but also at No. 4 all-time in game-winning goals (9) and No. 11 in scoring (14 goals).

Following graduation, the Diamond Bar native participated in the World Race, where she spent 11 months doing volunteer work in 11 different countries around the world. She has remained de-voted to service, and recently started her own nonprofit organiza-tion, Luv Way Ministries. The mission of Luv Way is to build and run a children’s home in Kenya, where Tomer hopes to save the lives of Kenyan children. For more information, visit luvway.org
