School Nickname “Bronchos” was the nickname selected

for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. School Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh.

The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student repre-sented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. Production Credits

UCO Soccer Staff Directory

Central Oklahoma plays the majority of its home games at Tom Thompson Field, located just east of Hamilton Field House on campus.

The field is named for UCO graduate Tom Thompson, who donated funds to help start the soccer program in 1998, and now ranks as one of the finest soccer facilities in NCAA Division II after undergoing a massive renovation in 2009.

UCO has enjoyed great success on its home field, entering the 2011 season with a glit-tering 97-21-5 (80.9 winning percentage) record in the facility. The Bronchos played their first home game on Sept. 13, 1998, beating St. Gregory’s 3-0.

UCO has also played 15 home games away from Tom Thompson Field, having gone 12-2 at Wantland Stadium and 0-1 at the Edmond Soccer Club Field. The Bronchos drew what was then an NCAA Division II-record 2,139 fans to Wantland Stadium in 2008 in a game against Dallas Baptist and went 8-2 while playing all 10 home games there in 2009.

Mike CookMike Cook has been with the Central Oklahoma program since

its inception and has built the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II power.

Cook came to UCO when the program started in 1998 and will be looking for his 200th win this season, having guided the Bronchos to an amazing 199-68-16 record over the past 13 years. He has an 18-year women’s record of 287-90-17, ranking among the Division II coaching leaders in all-time wins and winning percentage (.750).

Mike has led UCO to seven national playoff appearances, with the Bronchos winning six regular-season titles and five tournament crowns while members of the Lone Star Conference. Cook earned LSC Coach of the Year accolades six times and has been named Regional Coach of the Year twice.

He’s coached 36 All-Region players and five All-Americans during his tenure.UCO was 11-9 in its first year of varsity competition in 1998 and then went 13-5-1 in 1999

while breaking into the Division II top 20 rankings for the first time during the season. The Bronchos broke through in 2000, finishing 21-3 in winning both the regular season and

conference tournament titles. UCO made its first national playoff appearance, beating Mesa State before falling to eventual national champion UC San Diego in the quarterfinals.

UCO followed with a 15-6 league runner-up campaign in 2001, then shared the regular season league crown and won the LSC Tournament in 2002 before losing in the national tournament

opener to finish 20-3.The Bronchos made a repeat national tourna-

ment appearance in 2003 in finishing 15-5-2, then went 13-6-2 and won the league title in 2004.

Cook led the Bronchos to a 16-3-2 record and second consecutive LSC crown in 2005, with UCO losing a shootout in the national playoffs.

The Bronchos captured a third straight regular-season league championship in 2006 before again losing a shootout in the national tournament to finish 18-3-1.

UCO claimed a fourth consecutive LSC regular-season title and made its longest playoff run in 2007, winning two games to advance to the Sweet 16 before losing to St. Edward’s in the Midwest Regional finals to end a 19-5-1 campaign.

The Bronchos had their four-year string of LSC titles ended and finished 13-6-3 in 2008, but bounced back to go 14-6-3 in 2009, winning the LSC Tournament title in earning a national tournament berth before losing a shootout in the first round of the national meet.

UCO went 11-8-1 last year.Cook came to UCO after a highly-successful stint at Southern Nazarene. He served as the

SNU men’s assistant coach from 1987-92 before taking over head coaching duties for both the men’s and women’s teams in 1993 and went a combined 146-66-3 in five years at the helm.

MidfielderThe Bronchos look to take advantage of an

abundance of depth and experience here. All five starters return in seniors Katy

Kashwer and Lizzie Merritt and juniors Domi-nique Dinka, Stephanie Fleig

and Summer Grantham. Kashwer scored 16 points (seven goals, two assists) and

Grantham 15 (six goals, three assists) last year, while Fleig had a team-high six assists.

Division I transfer Nawal Kirts could have a big im-pact, while freshmen Ari Pugliese, Marisa Brumfield and Braden Balderrama

will also look to contribute.Cook Says: “This will

again be a strong suit for us with the return of several veteran

players and the addition of some good new players. The midfield

will be looked on to not only create many scoring opportunities but to also

have added goal production.” Fullback

Three experienced players re-turn, paced by senior standout McKenzie Caldwell.

Junior Shayna Kindsvater also started all last year and sophomore Jordan Hutchison saw some starting duty, giving the Bronchos a solid nucleus here.

Division I transfer Alyssa Anderson will step in and help immediately, with rookies Tess Barnard and Miranda Thorne also capable of seeing time along with sophomore Angie Rundle.

Cook Says: “McKenzie, Shayna and Jordan will anchor our back row again, but the fullback line has definitely been strengthened with the ad-dition of Alyssa and a couple of strong freshmen.”

GoalkeeperSenior Samantha Rusk is the returning starter

and a three-year letterwinner who has been a consistent presence between the posts for UCO.

Freshman Brandi Bartley and junior transfer Vanessa Martinez will push for playing time.

Cook Says: “Samantha has been steady all three years and we’re looking for a good year from her. Brandi could see some playing time right away and Vanessa gives us more depth.”

A Central Oklahoma team filled with experi-enced veterans and bolstered by a strong cast of newcomers looks to make waves in 2011 as the Bronchos aim at returning to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

UCO has back 11 players who started at least 10 games on last year’s 11-8-1 squad to go along with two Division I transfers and eight highly-regarded freshmen.

That mix of returning and incoming talent has long-time head coach Mike Cook looking for big things this fall, with the Bronchos set to compete as an independent before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associa-tion in 2012-13.

“We managed to put together a tough schedule and that gives us a chance to make a run at the playoffs even though we’re not in a conference this year,” said Cook, who is 199-68-16 in 13 years at the helm. “This team is well aware of the challenge and seems very focused on taking each game one at a time and that will give us a chance to return to the national tournament.”

UCO, which has made seven trips to the Division II playoffs, will be led by senior leaders McKenzie Caldwell, Katy Kash-wer, Lizzie Merritt, Ashton Morris and Samantha Rusk.

“One of the things that we’re excited about is the ability of a lot of our players to play multiple positions,” Cook said. “We’ll work hard to find the best fit and combina-tion to help us achieve our goals.”

A position-by-position look at the Bronchos: Forward

Senior Ashton Morris and junior Brittni Walker spearhead a potent group of forwards.

Walker was the team’s leading scorer for the second straight year last season with 23 points (nine goals, five assists), while Morris added five goals and three assists.

Sophomore letterwinner Sarah Jackson and redshirt freshman Kate Foran will also help, with rookies Sarah Purcell and Kaci Smarinsky both looking to challenge for playing time.Cook Says: “We have a lot of talent returning plus added some speed and depth in the freshman class. Brittni and Ashton will be the leaders up front and we’re really looking to step up the goal production in 2011.”

2011 UCO Soccer2010 Season Review

Central Oklahoma’s final season in the Lone Star Conference was an up-and-down campaign that resulted in an 11-8-1 record.

The Bronchos, who won six regular-season league titles from 2000-07, finished fifth in their last season and were eliminated in the semifinals of the LSC Tournament.

“We were really young and struggled with our consistency most of the year, both offen-sively and defensively,” head coach Mike Cook said. “But we got bet-ter down the stretch and played our best at the end of the season, so I was proud of the way we kept working to get better.”

UCO started the season in dramatic fashion on Sept. 3, pulling out a 2-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha on a Summer Grantham goal with just 30 seconds remaining.

Truman State handed the Bronchos a 2-1 setback two days later and UCO split two matches again the following weekend with a loss to St. Edward’s and a 2-1 win over Oklahoma City on Katy Kashwer’s tie-breaking goal.

The Bronchos finished off their season-opening six-game homestand the next week-end with a sweep of St. Mary’s and Science and Arts of Oklahoma, getting two goals from Kashwer in a 4-1 rout of the Drovers.

Dallas Baptist ended UCO’s three-game winning streak on Sept. 21 and the Bronchos opened conference play five days later with a 2-1 road over Southwestern Oklahoma as Brittni Walker scored both goals.

Central lost its next two LSC games, both on the road, to fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The Bronchos got back on track the week-end of Oct. 8-10 with a pair of last-minute home conference wins, beating East Central 3-2 and Northeastern State 1-0.

Dominique Dinka knocked in the game-winner with just 20 seconds to play against the Tigers, while Walker ended a scoreless tie with 1:05 remaining against the RiverHawks.

Those two wins moved UCO to 7-5 and 3-2, but the Bronchos went 0-2-1 in a three-game road swing and were in danger of missing the LSC Tournament heading into the final homestand of the season.

Central finished strong, sweeping its last three home games to move up to fifth in the final standings.

The Bronchos started the closing surge with a 3-1 win over Texas Woman’s and followed with another thrill-ing win in the final seconds, this one a 2-1 triumph over old nemesis West Texas A&M on Grantham’s goal off a free kick with just 22 seconds remaining.

UCO capped the regular season in impressive fash-ion, rolling over Eastern New Mexico 3-0 on Oct. 31 as Samantha Rusk and Sidney Jackson teamed up in goal for the second shutout of the season.

The Bronchos took on Incarnate Word in the first round of the LSC Tournament and avenged a regular season overtime loss to the Cardinals with a 3-1 victory, getting second-half goals from Ashton Morris and Walker to break a 1-1 tie.

That put UCO into the semifinals against regular season champion Midwestern State, but the season ended there with a hard-fought 1-0 overtime loss to the Mustangs, who scored with just 1:01 left in the extra session.

Morris and McKenzie Caldwell earned first-team All-LSC honors for the Bronchos, while Walker was a second-team selection.

Morris, Caldwell and Grantham also picked up NSCAA All-South Central Region recognition.

The MIAACentral Oklahoma will compete as an

NCAA Division II independent in all sports during the 2011-12 school year before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics As-socition in 2012-13.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Mis-souri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first orga-nized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 99 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts 17 championships (eight men, nine women).

Champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and out-door track and field, base-ball, tennis and golf for men and volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball, golf and tennis for women.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, changing its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri still remain in the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include

only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (then known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Mis-souri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (lat-er Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years be-

fore his retirement in 2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen

and served as commissioner until 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter

took over.Southwest Baptist brought

membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the conference added Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri West-
