SOR JUANA FESTIVALA Tribute to Mexican Women

The Sor Juana Festival is dedicated to Mexico’s Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), a great poet and philosopher who was known as La Décima Musa, (the Tenth Muse) and is known as the first feminist of the Americas.

Through the Sor Juana Festival, the National Museum of Mexican Art presents writers, musi-cians, dancers and performers from both sides of the border with a special emphasis on women in the arts.

This year’s Festival will take place September through November and will include these great events and performances :

Chavela Vargas TributeSeptember 7th at 6:45 p.m.National Museum of Mexican Art, Free

The wonderful Luisa Maria known as the ambassador of Mexican ranchera music accompanied by “El Proyecto Sur” de Nelson Sosa will be performing a tribute to the amazing Chavela Vargas.

Chavela Vargas, is the legendary Costa Rican singer who came to Mexico when she was 14. She is one of the great Latin American musical icons of the 20th Century and was awarded a Latin Grammy Lifetime Award in 2007. Sponsored by the Mexican Consul General of Chicago.

Denise Chávez, Live from the Mil Recuerdos Lounge September 20th at 6:30 p.m. National Museum of Mexican Art, $10$8 for members, $10 for non-members, open seating

¡Live at the Mil Recuerdos Lounge! is a rollicking evening featuring Performance Writer, Denise Chávez reading from her new novel, The King and Queen of Comezón. Set in the town of Comezón "Itch" New Mexico at the town's favorite cantina,

the pachanga takes place between Cinco de Mayo and Sixteenth of September.

The Mil Recuerdos Lounge is a metaphor for the fiesta of life and its denizens are people we know and love. It is a place where people come to relax, dispel fear, and interact with one another. It is also a place to hide, a place to escape as much as it is a place in which to celebrate and to dance. It is a fiesta in and unto itself. And yes, it is a place to slow dance with yourself or someone else while you seek that happiness—that comezón—that is always just out of reach.

Denise Chávez, is a performance writer, novelist, playwright, teacher and cultural activist based in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A true child of La Frontera, Chávez is the author of A Taco Testimony, Loving Pedro Infante, Face of An Angel, The Last of the Menu Girls, and La Mujer Que Sabía El Idioma de Los Animales/The Woman Who Knew the Language of the Animals.

Jennicet Gutiérrez. Activista transgénero. Nació en Tuxpan, Jalisco. Es parte de la organización FAMILIA: TQLM (Trans Queer Liberation Move-ment). En el verano de 2015, Gutiérrez participó en un evento de la comunidad LGBTQ en La Casa Blanca y como un acto de desobediencia civil recriminó al presidente Obama por su política migratoria. Pidió un alto a las deportacio-nes y un trato digno a la comunidad transexual en los centros de detención. Desde entonces, Gutiérrez ha alcanzado notoriedad a nivel nacio-nal y ha sido invitada como oradora principal a las universidades más prestigiosas de Estados Unidos. Para ella es muy importante que la voz de las mujeres transexuales de color sean escucha-das y tomadas en cuenta en todas las áreas de trabajo por la justicia social y racial. Jennicet con-tinúa trabajando como organizadora para detener las deportaciones, la encarcelación y la criminalización de los inmigrantes. En la actuali-dad, reside en Los Ángeles, California.

Diego Enrique Osorno

Diego Enrique Osorno. Reportero y escritor mexi-cano (1980, Monterrey) que ha sido testigo y narrador de algunos de los principales conflictos del siglo XXI en México y otros países de América Latina. Es, según la Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano Gabriel García Márquez, uno de los Nuevos Cronistas de Indias. Ha recibido reconocimientos como el Premio “A mano disar-mata” de la Stampa Romana de Italia, el Premio Latinoamericano de Periodismo sobre Drogas, el Premio Internacional de Periodismo por los 35 años de la revista Proceso y el Premio Nacional de Periodismo de México 2013, el cual dedicó al Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN). Algunos de sus libros, como El Cártel de Sinaloa (2009), La Guerra de los Zetas (2012) y Contra Estados Unidos (2014) han sido incluidos en las listas anuales de lo mejor de la literatura no ficción del diario Reforma. Su libro más reciente, es Slim. Biografía política del mexicano más rico del mundo.

También ha realizado proyectos de cine como El Alcalde, galardonado internacionalmente, así como iniciativas de regeneración del tejido social a partir del periodismo narrativo, como ElBarrioAntiguo.com. Formó parte de la Comisión de la Verdad de Oaxaca, que documentó crímenes de lesa humanidad y consignó a funcionarios involucrados en ejecuciones extraju-diciales y actos de tortura. Ha sido profesor de la Universidad de Monterrey, publica una columna semanal en el diario Maspormas y es escritor de Bengala, una agencia dedicada a la creación y desarrollo de historias para cine y televisión.

Formed in the summer of 2016, the Music of the Americas Ensemble (MAE) is dedicated to explor-ing and performing music written by composers

from both the Americas and Europe. This Chicago-based group aims to serve Latino communities by providing an educational and musically satisfying experience through performer-audience interaction. The four founding members of MAE are a diverse group of profes-sional musicians. Violist Ariel Garcia is a native of Chicago's La Villita and Pilsen neighborhoods. Flutist Nicaulis Alliey and violinist Jose Angel Escalona Alvarado both hail from Venezuela. Cellist Francisco Lopez Malespin was born and raised in Brazil. Each musi-cian has had extensive training and performance experience which provides for a unique group sound.

The Gwen Araujo Murder, The Orlando Nightclub Shooting, and The Stonewall Riots. What do these events have in common? All have impacted that LGBTQ community, and all should matter.

How does our community remain resilient and united in the aftermath of a tragedy? And how do we prevent the Pulse Nightclub shootings from being rewritten and whitewashed and ensure that the Latinx names are not lost in the media the way they're sometimes lost in the history of the Stonewall Riots? Sor Juana Legacy Award Reception, honoring nationally recognized artist, Ester Hernandez November 15th at 6:00 p.m. National Museum of Mexican Art, $30 with dinner reception

Ester Hernandez is a San Francisco based visual artist and graduate of UC Berkeley. She is best known for her depiction of Chicana and Latina women through pastels and prints. Her work reflects political, social, ecological and spiritual themes. She has had numerous solo and group shows throughout the U.S. and internationally. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art – Smithsonian, Library of Congress, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo in Mexico City. Stanford University recently acquired her artistic archives.
