Mountain Lions Characteristics■ Animal: Mountain Lion■ Also known as : Cougar■ Scientific Name: Puma Concolor■ Height: 40”■ Body Length: up to 6-8 ft long■ Weight: 60- 150 lb■ Color: Tan, with reddish or white belly■ Tail: Long■ Diet: Carnivore■ Lifespan: 5-10 years depending on

their habitat

Mountain Lion■ Scientific Name : Puma Concolor■ Mountain Lions are also know as Cougars■ Mountain Lions have not been domesticated for human use.

These animals should be respected and humans should try to keep away from them because if they feel threaten they could attack humans.

■ These animals are not domesticated because they are wild cats when people try to domesticate them many times they can attack their owners because their wild instinct takes over.

■ Humans also represent a threat to Mountain Lions, especially because many people hunt them.

Mountain Lion Energy Transfer

Mountain Lions eat large mammals such as coyotes, deer. Small animals such as mice, squirrels, porcupines, raccoons, rabbits, beavers.

Mountain Lion Ecology■ Habitat: “Today they are primarily found

in 14 western states with a small endangered population in Florida”

■ They can be found in deserts, humid coast forest, arid hillsides. They can live from sea level to snow covered mountain peaks.

■ They are also found in Canada, Argentina, British Colombia, Southern Alberta, California, Texas, and east of the Mississippi river .

■ Mountain lions in their natural habitat are predators, but sometimes like many animals they can be the prey of humans.

Mountain Lion Ecology■Mountain lions can leap as

high as 15 ft. and as far as 40ft.

■Their lifespan is 10 years which to them would be considered as old age.

■Cougars in captivity are known to live twice as long

■The majority of wild mountain lions live only to be 5, mainly because many of them live in places where they are hunted.

Evolution of Mountain Lions■ Some of their adaptations are their Large

paws which helps them when jumping great heights.

■ Long tail helps them to balance especially when they jump

■ They are able to run a high speed which helps them when they are in danger

■ They are able to climb up and down trees which helps them find their prey and escape dangers

■ Jump cliff that are up to 18 ft■ They are solitary animals, this helps

them stay away from humans and danger

■ When humans are moving closer to the natural habitat of mountain lions, these lions tend to isolate themselves, this helps them stay alive for longer times.

Evolution of Mountain Lions■ Reproduction

■ Mating Season: can be during any season but it happens more common from December-March

■ Gestation: 82-96 Days■ Litter Size: 2-4 Kittens■ After the Kittens are born the

mother is the only one who stay with them, raises them, and teaches them how to hunt

■ The mother usually stay with her kittens from 1 ½ to 2 years after that they each go their separate ways.
