Fugitives of the Creative Economy: A One-day Workshop on the Labour and

Resistance of Young Culture Workers in Precarious Times 10:30am-4:30pm Saturday 13 June, 2015 The Khyber Centre for the Arts, 5521 Cornwallis Street

Presented by the Radical Imagination Project and the Khyber Centre for the Arts:

It’s no secret: work in the cultural sector is tough, especially for young people. From the pressure of workingcontract-to-contract to constant government cutbacks to arts funding, from the rise of unpaid internships to therising cost of rent, from competing for the scraps to the persistence of sexism, racism and other forms ofoppression, the enthusiasm for the “creative city” and “creative class” is rarely matched by reality. Rather,we’re made into fugitives of the creative economy.

Beyond simply rehearsing the dimensions of this terrible situation our one-day workshop aims to bring youngcultural workers together to imagine and build alternatives. From artists to dancers to poets to film-makers toeditors to animators to journalists to actors to curators to writers, we have a common struggle against aprecarious economy and austerity politics that place culture on the chopping block, that renders our labour lesssecure, more precarious and more exploitative, and that seems willing to sacrifice young workers of all sorts onthe altar of money.

Yet let’s not forget or belittle the joys of creation, collaboration and experimentation, nor lose sight of how theexploitation of cultural workers is intimately connected to other, often more brutal exploitation of workers herein Canada and around the world. Instead, let’s talk about practical and empowering methods of resisting andthriving. Let’s build solidarity towards a different future.

This one-day workshop will begin in the morning with a panel of speakers outlining the nuances of theproblem. Break-out groups will offer an opportunity for use to talk about common problems and brainstormsolutions. In the afternoon we’ll form into interest groups and come up with schemes.

Hopefully, there will be momentum to actualize these plans going forward, but even if all we achieve is amoment of solidarity and critical discussion,we’ll have succeeded in challenging the order of loneliness, poverty, competition and silence that surrounds work in the cultural sector.

Long Shadows at Dawn: The Art of Film Noir http://artgallery.dal.ca/events/filmvideo.html Curated by Ron Foley MacDonald

Now recognized as one the most influential of filmmaking styles, Film Noir was often dismissed in its own timeas genre-heavy urban crime drama. With its creeping shadows, wet streets, addled subjectivity and loomingsense of betrayal, Noir realized the dark underside of America’s postwar triumphalism. Populated by losers, tough guys and femmes fatales, Noir sports stylized dialogue, ruthless action and an existential world view thatresonates deeply with today’s sense of everyday despair.

In this sampling of Film Noir Classics, we proceed from the beginning—just before the US entry into WWII—right up to Noir’s end at the beginning of the 1960s when a new, hopeful era starts and the genre experiencesits eclipse.

Program Description

The Grants to Film and Video Artists program supports Canadian professional independent artists who use

cinema and video as a mode of artistic expression, and provides them with opportunities for creative renewal

and for production of independent film and video works.

The program offers three components: Scriptwriting Grants, Production Grants andResearch/Creation Grants.

individual Canadian artists committed to the practice of film and video in a film/video as independent artist-

controlled media art forms.

Only independent artworks are eligible to this program. This program does not support work created for the

cultural industries of commercial film and television. Independent means that the artist initiates and is the
