AFCOOP would like to invite you to our annual Super 8 Holiday Screening + Party!

Each year AFCOOP challenges local filmmakers to create short and silent holiday(ish) themed films using asingle role of Super-8 film. The guidelines are simple: Filmmakers were provided with one cartridge of Super-8 (approx. 3 min. shootingtime), a two-day camera rental and were required to shoot all ‘in-camera’ (no editing). The first time they willsee their film will be in front of a live audience!

FILM 5 Trainee Info Session Thursday, January 15th, 6pm FREE

The FILM 5 Trainee Program is a hands-on training program for aspiring technical crew. Paralleling the CreativeTeam component the Trainee program provides participants with high quality classroom training, practical on-set instruction and networking opportunities.

To become a Trainee crew member, you must take the required workshops for your desired position, pay theapplication fee, which includes the mandatory Set Etiquette Course, come to the Trainee/Team Meet and Greetand submit a resume and application form.

On the FILM 5 sets, trainees work under key crew members from the local film industry. Keys are industryprofessionals responsible for running their department, and for providing guidance and leadership to thetrainees. Trainees leave the production having networked with industry crew, with practical experience andresume references.

Each FILM 5 production is required to have a minimum of seven trainees on set. FILM 5 productions take placeon a weekend in March and/or April.

Creative Team Producers are responsible for reviewing resumes and hiring trainees. The Project Manageroversees this process and works to ensure that all trainees receive a successful placement.

2. WORKSHOPS

AFCOOP's Winter Filmmaking Workshops: Starting January 20th

AFCOOP’s Winter Workshop Series presents classes in all aspects of filmmaking from screenwriting to editing

and lots in between. Workshops are open to the public, though some pre-requisites apply.

The first workshop, “Intro to Filmmaking in NS” is a primer in all things film-ic in the maritime region. Learn

about the basic production process and where to find the resources to make your first film. Other workshops in

the series introduce the most important roles on a film set as well as focusing on some of AFCOOP’s new

equipment. Learn from professional filmmakers who are active in their field and connect with fellow workshop

participants in this practical series.

On-Set Training Program

Want to put the skills you learn in the workshop series to use on a film set? The FILM 5 Trainee program offers

participants the opportunity to work on a professional short film shoot. For more information visit the Trainee

by the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) in France in 2011, the event has now spread to

some 50 other countries.

From Newfoundland and Labrador to Yukon, more than 60 participating venuesundefinedmovie theatres,

cultural centres, associations, festivals and librariesundefinedwill join the celebration and hold free screenings

In September 2013, Bravo introduced BravoFACTUAL awards to be granted by the BravoFACT(Foundation to

Assist Canadian Talent) jury for the production of short form documentary projects. Selected projects will be

eligible to apply for up to a maximum $50,000 in production funding.

Following the same mandate as for scripted BravoFACT shorts, BravoFACTUAL projects will reflect themes, large

and small, produced by directors and producers from across Canada.

There are two deadlines annually. The next deadline will be January 9 2015.

A Foundation To Assist Canadian Talent, was created in 1984 concurrent with the launch of MuchMusic, which

when it launched in 1998. The launch of MuchMore (formerly known as MuchMoreMusic) also marked the

creation of PromoFACT, an Electronic Press Kit and website production fund for Canadian artists, independent

record labels and artist management companies.

MuchFACT is now funded entirely by MuchMusic and MuchMore (formerly MuchMoreMusic). Originally named

VideoFACT, the company changed its name to MuchFACT in September, 2009. Along with the name change,

creative partnerships and real business opportunities. It is a full-time, five-and-a-half month professional

program for producers, writers, directors and editors that balances artistic vision with the demands of a shifting

industry.

Program Description

These grants assist Canadian artists working with new media or audio technologies as means of artistic

expression. Grants cover artist’s subsistence costs as well as the direct costs of research, creative development

and production of artworks created with new media or audio technologies.

To ensure the vitality and continued excellence of new media and audio art, Canada Council for the Arts grants

help support professional artists engaged in creating independent artworks;; that is, where the artist maintains

complete control over the work.

The program has two components, Research Grants and Production Grants.

Grants awarded through this program support independent Canadian artists making a creative use of

technology or audio for the purpose of research or production of works in new media or audio.

Type of work supported

Priority is given to projects that involve innovation and artistic expression. Innovation may consist of a renewal

of formal elements in terms of style, technique or process. It can also be based on the originality of the subject

or content of the project, or on the uniqueness of the artist’s perspective or process of expression. Only the



most innovative proposals are supported.

Priority is also given to projects that demonstrate the development of an individual style or expressive process,as well as a commitment to questioning and expanding the discipline. Eligible projects may be in the form ofworks integrating technology or robotics, audio artworks, installations, performances, immersive environments,web art, VJing, sound sculptures or soundscapes, radiophonic or electronic art and interactive works. Onlyindependent projects are eligible for this program.

Nova Scotia Talent Trust gives out 75,000 in Scholarships to 51 Nova Scotia Emerging Artists- The Nova ScotiaTalent Trust has recently given out $75,000 in scholarships to emerging Nova Scotia artists in the fields ofdance, theatre, media (film) studies, music, visual and literary arts. The 51 successful scholarship recipientswere chosen from a field of 107 applications from two deadlines, 1 March and 1 May 2014. 5 of the 51scholarships are supported by the NS Arts Endowment Fund in the amount of $2,000 each.

The Film and Media Arts recipients this year were Gwyneth Christoffel, Halifax, and Sam deCoste, Halifax.

The next deadlines are March 1st, 2015 for summer study, and May 1st, 2015 for fall or winter study.

The Yorkton Film Festival is proud to announce that it has opened its call for submissions for the 2015 festival.

For the first time, YFF has teamed with Submittable to allow filmmakers to digitally submit their submissions to

the festival.

“We’ve taken some tremendous steps preparing for this year’s festival.” said Executive Director Randy Goulden.

“We’re excited to be working with Submittable to allow filmmakers to digitally submit their films. We hope in

the long run, it will help filmmakers from across Canada to more easily submit their materials to our festival.”

In addition to this new submission process, YFF has also launched a completely revamped website. “As North

America’s longest running film festival, we’ve reached the age where we need little cosmetic touch ups now and

then.” joked Randy Goulden. “The new website is very stylish, very modern, and I think people are going to be

The LIDF has been selected as a qualifying film festival by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and

Sciences. Recipients of the festival’s prize in the Documentary Short Subject category will qualify for

consideration at the Annual Academy Awards® (OSCAR®) without the standard theatrical run, provided the

film otherwise complies with the Academy rules.

eligible. Film must not have not been previously submitted to DCISFF. Films in any language other than

The Centre for Art Tapes is very pleased to announce that D’Arcy Wilson has been selected as a 2014-2015 Local Artist-In-Residence. The Local Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for localmedia artists to experiment and develop new works involving audio, video, or new media. This residency willtake place at the Centre for Art Tapes from December through March 2014. Previous Local Artists in Residenceinclude: Krista Davis, Will Robinson, Khanhthan Tran, Melanie Colosimo, Eryn Foster, Sym Corrigan and LéolaLeblanc.

D’Arcy Wilson is a Halifax-based interdisciplinary artist working primarily in performance and video. She holds aBFA from Mount Allison University, and an MFA from The University of Calgary. Her performance practiceconsiders the human as an isolated species of animal in search of a connection to or role within nature. In hermultidisciplinary exploration of postcolonial relationships to wildlife, she presents themes of absence, loss, andvulnerability. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and she has had recent solo exhibitions at LaCentrale Galerie Powerhouse (Montreal, QC), Forest City (London, ON), ARTsPLACE (Annapolis Royal, NS) andothers. D’Arcy has participated in group shows throughout Canada (most recently, Somewheres at theConfederation Centre, Charlottetown, PE), and various artist residencies in Atlantic Canada.

The Nova Scotia Co-operative Council has launched a Social Enterprise Innovation Competition. Three prizeswill be awarded, one in each Region (South west Valley, Northern/ Central, and Cape Breton). The prize is a$2500.00 equity contribution plus 10 hours of technical assistance (governance training, business plan review,etc). The Social Enterprise Innovation Competition is open to all social enterprises in Nova Scotia who meet theeligibility criteria. They can be start-ups (registered/incorporated and ready to launch), or established socialenterprises looking to grow or become more innovative. Municipalities, First Nations, and other agenciesconsidering a social enterprise to address a local challenge or opportunity are also eligible. Social enterprises are defined as enterprises that use market-oriented production for the sale of goods and/orservices to further a public benefit mission. In other words, the enterprises must be operating a businessactivity – selling a product or service. The social enterprise can take the form of a not-for-profit, non-profit, a co-operative or social purpose businesswhich are for-profit but designed to fulfil a social mission. Social enterprises have a strong emphasis on meeting a community need or maximizing an opportunity that willbenefit the broader community. Examples may be, (though not limited to), a local daycare, transportationsystem for seniors or persons with disabilities, recycling depot, homecare and healthcare services, etc. “The Nova Scotia Co-operative Council is keenly interested in stimulating and supporting the creation ofcommunity owned enterprises that can address local issues and maximize a local opportunity.
