Each year, we challenge local filmmakers to make a short film with a single roll of Super-8 film, and we're screening their creations at

the party, accompanied by improvised music by members of slick local band Loveland. Also! The winner will get a great North End-

FILM 5 Trainee Program Info Session: Thursday, January 14, 6 pm

The FILM 5 Trainee Program is a hands-on training program for aspiring technical crew. Paralleling the Creative Team component the

Trainee program provides participants with high quality classroom training, practical on-set instruction and networking opportunities.

On the FILM 5 sets, trainees work under key crew members from the local film industry. Keys are industry professionals responsible

for running their department, and for providing guidance and leadership to the trainees. Trainees leave the production having

networked with industry crew, with practical experience and resume references.

Creative Team Producers are responsible for reviewing resumes and hiring trainees. The Project Manager oversees this process and

works to ensure that all trainees receive a successful placement. FILM 5 productions take place on a weekend in the spring.

Scriptwriters' Circle: Bring Your Own Film

The monthly Scriptwriters' Circle is now ALSO a BYOF (Bring Your Own Film) night. If you have a short film you've made, or are

working on, or are planning to work on, and you'd like to show it, or bits of it, or even just talk about it, this is the place for you. Get

feedback and suggestions on any aspect of filmmaking.

The Shortest Day is back for a third year from December 18 to 21 with a program of new, classic and award-winning shorts by some

ALTERED STATES: Transformation in Science Fiction Films - Wednesday Series

Aristotle states, famously, in his Poetics, that “Characters must change”. In Science Fiction, sometimes everything changes. In this

film program we look at a series of transformations, from Fritz Lang’s memorable 1927 film Metropolis to two recent adaptations ofstories by the maverick Sci-Fi author Philip K. Dick: Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. Whether it is humans changing intovegetables—as in Invasion of the Body Snatchers—or particles changing into dangerously unstable elements—as in The MagneticMonster, which climaxes in Nova Scotia—change is constant in Science Fiction, just as it is in technology and identity today.

distribution of funds, artists can only receive one Creation Grant in a 12-month period.

USC Canada and Planet in Focus Announce the 2016 Seed Pitch Competition

USC Canada works with small-scale farmers in 12 countries including Canada to grow healthy food in ways that work with nature,

build ecosystem resilience, and protect biodiversity. Explore USC Canada’s website for ideas at usc-canada.org and our

Good food comes from good seeds. Farmers have selected, planted and saved an enormous variety of biodiverse seeds for thousands

of years. Seeds are the underground heroes of agriculture, with a bearing on healthy soils, clean water, and climate. Seed saving is

remarkably skilled and complex work but it is also vastly under-appreciated.

This is where you come in. We are calling for pitches for short films that convey this in a fun, easy-to-understand, and easy-to-share

way. This $5,000 grant will support the production of one well crafted, creative short film that engages, informs and inspires.

NFB's Hothouse 11: Call for Submissions

The National Film Board of Canada seeks submissions from emerging (young and not-so-young) Canadian filmmakers and artists

intrigued by animation art, for the 11th edition of Hothouse, a 12-week paid apprenticeship in full-on, all-inclusive, real-world

animation filmmaking. Successful applicants will work remotely from their corner of the country but hand in hand with the NFB studio

in their region and within the loving arms of the Animation Studio in Montreal.

The Gonzago Institute will offer a tuition-free 3-month certificate program hosted by The Khyber Centre for the Arts and existing as

part of the Khyber’s programming for the term of the certificate’s duration. The program is aimed at artists between 19 and 35 to

assist in their professional, practical and conceptual development, with a basis on three main components: practice, theory, and

community.

The Gonzago Institute’s pilot certificate program will begin January 15, 2016. The instructors of theory and practice will determine

regular meeting times with students over the course of the 3-month period. Weekly, all students and instructors will come together

for a symposium to discuss one another’s progress. Symposia will take place at the Khyber in coordination with its programming

schedule.

Five students will be selected for the pilot program. To be eligible, applicants must be between the ages of 19 and 35, live in the

vicinity of the HRM and not be a current full-time student. The application deadline is December 15. To apply, send a letter of interestto [email protected].

The Grants to Film and Video Artists program supports Canadian professional independent artists who use cinema and video as a

The program offers three components: Scriptwriting Grants, Production Grants andResearch/Creation Grants.

To ensure the vitality and continued excellence of media arts, Canada Council for the Arts grants help support individual Canadian

artists committed to the practice of film and video in a film/video as independent artist-controlled media art forms.

Only independent artworks are eligible to this program. This program does not support work created for the cultural industries of

commercial film and television. Independent means that the artist initiates and is the driving force behind the proposed project. The

artist must maintain complete creative and editorial control over the work, ownership of the final work and receive a significant part

of the revenues generated by the work.
