Dalhousie Arts Centre Film Screenings: ALTERED STATES: Transformation in Science Fiction Films - Wednesday Series
Curated by Ron Foley MacDonald
Aristotle states, famously, in his Poetics, that “Characters must change”. In Science Fiction, sometimes
everything changes. In this film program we look at a series of transformations, from Fritz Lang’s memorable
1927 film Metropolis to two recent adaptations of stories by the maverick Sci-Fi author Philip K. Dick: Minority
Report and A Scanner Darkly. Whether it is humans changing into vegetables—as in Invasion of the Body
Snatchers—or particles changing into dangerously unstable elements—as in The Magnetic Monster, which
climaxes in Nova Scotia—change is constant in Science Fiction, just as it is in technology and identity today.
SCREENINGS WEDNESDAYS AT 8 PM
FREE ADMISSION
9 December - Minority Report
Steven Spielberg, USA, 2002, 144 mins. Mixing noir with a dark futurism, Spielberg’s Minority Report might just
be the greatest of all latter-day Sci-Fi films. Tom Cruise plays an ambitious detective who can stop imminent
crimes through an invasive technology. He is eventually caught up in his own web by his associates, played by

Colin Farrell and Max von Sydow.
16 December - A Scanner Darkly
Richard Linklater, USA, 2006, 100 mins. American Indie champion Richard (Boyhood) Linklater’s second foray
into animation tells the story of a cop on the trail of a dangerous drug that changes the nature of reality. Based
on another Philip K. Dick story, almost every frame of A Scanner Darkly is about transformation.
The Seventh Annual Canadian Labour International Film Festival
Wed., November 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op
5663 Cornwallis Street, Suite 101
Contact: Deedee Slye—[email protected] • 902-497-6761
http://labourfilms.ca/
The Canadian Labour International Film Festival tells the stories of workers – unionised and non-unionised.
CLiFF is the stage and the voice of those who seek justice on the job and dignity in their workplace. CLiFF would
also like to bring the subject of unpaid work into a public discussion. Our festival provides a national platform to
show and showcase those stories which have been made into films, but cannot find an audience beyond the
film makers’ own circle of influence. We give filmmakers exposure across Canada (and in some parts of the
United States). We bring the community attention to labour films made in the past that represent stories that
deserve wider and current audience?

Local Artist-In-Residence of 2015-2016. The Local Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for local
media artists to experiment and develop new works involving audio, video, or new media. During his six-month

The project stems from the realization of his recently completed projects, BEACON, STATION, SIGNAL and
FIELD, all of which considered contemporary relationships of how we relate to sight, sound, and distance
through correspondence using archaic or historical media. FUTURE TELEPHONE extends this exploration into the
interactive media of the telephone as a potential tool for diplomacy within Prince Edward Island, a province that
for many reasons has been greatly affected by delayed communications due to geographical isolation or harsh
