Beginner:

ELI101: Speaking With an Emphasis on Pronunciation: This course provides students opportunities to practice English in structured and semi-structured settings. Special attention is given to a limited set of functions, such as basic conversational skills. Pronunciation work focuses on the basic regularities of English pronunciation.

ELI102: Reading: Focus is on comprehension for understanding main and supporting ideas. Students increase their passive vocabularies through the study of word formation.

ELI103: Writing: Focus is on the basics of writing, spelling and punctuation. Writing includes controlled exercises and free writing.

ELI104: Listening: This course gives students practice in understanding samples of spoken English of limited length and complexity and prepares them to understand segments of natural conversation on a variety of topics.

beginning in the Spring Semester of 2015. This affordable, 3-level program is geared toward students

who are preparing for college study as well as working professionals. If English is your second

Intermediate:

ELI201: Speaking: This course introduces students to English pronunciation, such as production of sounds, rhythm, intonation, word stress, and vowel reduction.

ELI202: Reading: This course provides opportunities for students to develop their reading skills and enables them to use academic texts outside of the class. Focus will be on reading skills, such as summarizing, paraphrasing, skimming, and making inferences.

ELI203: Writing: Practice in expository essays based on personal experience, observations, and class readings, with a review of acceptable English structure.

ELI204: Listening: This course introduces students to English used in an educational context. Emphasis is on note-taking by listening to short lectures. Conversational listening skills will also be studied and include guessing the meaning of words from their context and the way they are stressed.

Advanced:

ELI301: Speaking & Listening for Academic Purposes: Designed to prepare students for college courses, the skills necessary to succeed in their coursework will be emphasized.

ELI302: Reading: This course focuses on the practice of critical reading comprehension skills with emphasis on determining main thoughts, inferences, tone and style. Efficient reading techniques will be developed.

ELI303: Writing: This course is designed to help develop academic writing abilities in English. Students will develop written fluency and improve command over textual, rhetorical and broad conventions through academic writing.

ELI304: Listening: This course concentrates on lecture comprehension, with special attention to note-taking while recognizing main ideas and support, and determining the attitude of the speaker toward the subject. Students also work on comprehension of complex information presented in non-lecture format, such as small-group discussions within the classroom.
