Entrepreneurs & Intrapreneurs
• Because entrepreneurs have had the courage to ask questions and take risk—wheels were invented, humans learned to fly, machines were made to work more efficiently and the world moved forward. The spirit to invent and innovate lies at the heart of true entrepreneurship. Janine de Nysschen (blog)

• No one ‘envisioned search-engine optimizers or web designers or executive coaches or nano technologists… When we’re cabined in the present, we suffer from a certain poverty of imagination. We massively underestimate the human ingenuity and resilience. The future will bring industries we can’t imagine and jobs which we lack the vocabulary to describe.
Daniel Pink as interviewed by Geoffrey Colvin, CNN Money .com
• What I’m actually saying is that when the world is flat, the biggest competition is between you and your imagination.

Imagine it is 1995• I’m going to describe two new encyclopedias –one just
out, the other to be launched in a few years. You have to predict which one will be more successful in 2010.
– The first encyclopedia comes from Microsoft. Microsoft will fund this encyclopedia, pay professional writers and editors to craft articles on thousands of topics. Microsoft will sell it on CD-roms.
– The second encyclopedia won’t come from a company. It will be
created by tens of thousands of people who write and edit articles for fun. Participants will contribute their labor. The encyclopedia will be on-line and free—no charge to anyone.
• Which one will be successful and which one will go
defunct?

Two key assumptions
Every individual has the capacity to innovate...& to be more innovative than they currently are!
Every leader can foster greater creativity, risk taking and innovation in those around them.

The capacity to innovate is about the ideas we think about, creativity, and the risks that we’re willing to take to bring those ideas into reality.

The 4 Creativity Drivers • Ambiguity- “There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells
you it is going to be a butterfly”. Buckminster Fuller
• Independence- “I invented my life by taking for granted that everything I did not like would have an opposite, which I would like”. Coco Chanel
• Inner-directed-”We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new thing, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”. J. K. Rowling
• Uniqueness- “It’s no secret that we were sticking just about every nickel we had on the chance that people would really be interested in something totally new....”Walt Disney

The 3 Risk-Taking Drivers?• Authenticity- “Resolved, that the women of this
nation in 1876, have greater cause for discontent, rebellion and revolution than the men of 1776”. Susan B Anthony
• Resiliency- “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”. Thomas Edison
• Self-acceptance- “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves”. Marie Curie

Practices for YOU, as a leaderAMBIGUITYAllow for more open dialogue and sharing of ideas within the team—take away the structure—You don’t always have to have an agenda
INDEPENDENTAsk individuals what they think before asking for the ‘group (to) think’
INNER-DIRECTED Stretch people—asking them to be more inner-directed—reward them for their ‘different’ ideas
UNIQUENESSFocus on people’s uniqueness and the diversity of experience and thought
AUTHENTIC Encourage people within the team to say what’s on their mind—accept candor without criticism or hurt
RESILIENT So, something didn’t work out—encourage everyone to stop dwelling on what didn’t work and focus on what’s next
SELF-ACCEPTINGThe faster people get over a ‘mistake’ and don’t blame themselves or others, the faster the solutions will come
