THE VILLAGE REPORTER
(October 17th, 2014)-EDON: The Bomber defense
didn't play nearly as bad as the score would indicate.
It's only natural to put a majority of the blame on adefense when one's team loses 55-16. Yet, Northwood hadless than 300 total yards in the game, hardly indicative of
an offensive explosion. Then there's the fact that North-wood only made 13 rst downs, which also is a fairly low
number for such a high score.
So what happened? It begins with this; For the rst time this season, the
Bombers struggled to move the ball. They were able tostart drives well, as 17 rst downs would indicate, but
there were consistency issues with their offense. This ledto a decent number of punts.
This is where one of the major issues Edon had came
into play. The Bombers were not very successful in cover-
ing punts. All season long, they've struggled to tackle inspace, and Northwood made them pay for it. The Rangers
ran one punt back for a touchdown, and took another
just a few yards short of the end zone. Hidden yards is apopular term for those which are gained on special teams.
Northwood had a lot of hidden yards.Turnovers are also hard to overcome, and the Bombers
had 4 of them on the evening, including an interceptionthat was returned for a long touchdown. Edon's defense
was able to force three turnovers of their own, though, theoretically lessening the impact of their offense's mis-
takes.
Overall, Edon only passes for 149 yards and 3 inter-ceptions, with quarterback Kaden Sapp completing 12 of
35 passes for 139 and all three picks. They also rushedfor a mere 79 yards, well below their usual production on
the ground. The running game did provided both Bomber
touchdowns, as a saving grace.
Perhaps the biggest factor in the game, however, wasdepth. Northwood had signicantly more bodies on their
sideline than Edon. This game was a decent one in the
rst half, with the Bombers going into halftime down 20-8. The Rangers did more than half of their offensive dam-
age in the second half. Having a larger rotation of playersis a huge advantage, and can determine the outcome of
games. This loss is not on Edon's defense. They played well,
though there were a few slip ups. No, offense and specialteams had a rough time against Northwood, and played a
bigger role in the defeat. Fatigue may have been the lead-
ing factor overall, though.Edon will continue its Toledo Area Athletic Conference
schedule this week, as they take on Ottawa Hills.

Edon Offense Stalls, Bombers Lose To Northwood

THE VILLAGE REPORTER
(October 17th, 2014)-GIBSONBURG:The toast of the Toledo Area Athletic Con-
ference (TAAC), Gibsonburg tends to giveteams more than they can handle during
their games. Hilltop experienced this rsthand on Friday, losing the game 51-7.
Hilltop allowed four touchdowns and
a safety in the rst quarter alone, puttingthe game out of reach early on. With an-
other score in the second period, and twomore in the third, Gibsonburg pumped
the breaks in the fourth quarter. Hilltop, meanwhile, got on the board late in the
game, with sophomore quarterback Quinn
Smith connecting with Mikel Burlew fora 17 yard touchdown with just over four
minutes to go in the game. The Cadets managed 159 yards of to-
tal offense, giving up 495 to Gibsonburg.Smith himself passes for 179 yards while
going 17 of 37 passing with 1 touchdownand 4 interceptions. This is a telling stat,as Hilltop rushed for -20 yards in the
game. This is a legitimate number, as notone rusher from Hilltop nished the night
with a positive yard on the ground.Burlew led the team in both receptions
and receiving yards, bringing in 4 balls
for 70 yards. Zack VanDyke also made 4
catches, gaining 33 yards receiving. Quin-ton Miller had three receptions for 35
yards as well.
Justin Ashenfelter had a busy day, asHilltop had to punt 6 times in the match-
up. Averaging 25.8 yards per kick, hetotaled 155 yards punting the ball away,
with one of his kicks trapping Gibsonburgwithin their own twenty yard line.
Defensively, the Cadets showed somepride, despite the volume of the loss. Jalen
Towers made 2 tackles for a loss, while
Zack VanDyke and Quinn Smith eachmade 1. Quentin Miller also made an in-
terception against Gibsonburg quarter-back Ryan Clark.
With Gibsonburg being among the eliteof the TAAC and well beyond it, this loss
shouldn't come as a total surprise. In a
rebuilding year, Hilltop stood little chanceagainst such a polished team given their
youth. Yet that likely gives little comfort to
the Cadets themselves, who should expectto win every time they step on the eld. Ifthey approach the game in that manner,
eventually they won't be the only ones who
do so.Hilltop will next see action this week,
when they travel to Delta in a tough non-conference game.

(October 17th, 2014)-ARCHBOLD: De-
spite out gaining the Blue Streaks offen-
sively, Montpelier suffered a 35-13 defeatat the hands of Archbold on Friday night.
The Locos played keep away with Arch-bold, holding on to the ball for 31:13 and
running 72 plays in the game. As a point
of comparison, this tactic left the BlueStreaks with just 16:47 and 34 plays to
move the ball. However, Archbold madethose plays count, averaging 7.6 yards per
snap versus Montpelier's 4.3.The reason this strategy backred for
the Locomotives is likely because, with
limited snaps, Archbold decided to focusalmost solely on the running game. In fact,
257 of their 259 yards came on the ground. It's always risky to be one-dimensional on
offense, but the Montpelier defense hasshown that it struggles to contain the edg-
es, leaving runners to make one guy miss
for big gains on outside running plays. The Locos also had a productive day
rushing, putting up 197 yards of their own.Dallas Royer ran for 97 of those yards on
21 carries. Bryce Cooley, who is starting towork his way into the rotation for Montpe-
lier, gained 52 yards on 10 attempts, also
scoring a touchdown. Quarterback DylanSnyder, coming off of his return last week,
struggled a bit running the ball, earning34 yards on 17 rushes.
Snyder also passed for 115 yards, atouchdown, and an interception while
completing 8 of his 20 pass attempts. NateMcCord caught half of said completions,
racking up 72 yards and that touchdown
as well. Jared Lyons made 1 reception fo
23 yards, while Dallas Royer made a 10yard catch out of the backeld.
With 312 total yards, it was turnovers
that seemed to hinder the Locomotivesscoring, with the team handing Archbold
the ball 3 times. No matter how well an of-
fense is moving the ball, a turnover is acritical mistake that can render an entire
drive nothing more than a waste of time. For the Locomotive defense, they didn't
see a lot of work due to the limited num-ber of plays Archbold was able to run. Yet,
when they were on the eld, they were dec-
imated by that strong Blue Streak rushingattack.
One defensive highlight, however, wasCody Caudill intercepting one of Archbold
quarterback Derek Walker's 4 passes onthe night.
A sound strategy and solid offense
wasn't enough for Montpelier to get byArchbold. Turnover will ruin just about
any strategy, though.Montpelier will regroup and travel to
Bryan this week. It will be interesting tosee how each team reacts after their re-
spective losses last Friday.

AMID THE CHAOS ... Bodies collide in a very physical game between Montpelier andArchbold.

THE VILLAGE REPORTER
WAUSEON-October 17, 2014 - Thequestion ying around Wauseon during
the week was "Will we be ready for Bryan
(5-3, 4-2) after a huge win over Delta theweek before?" It is thought that a 61-0
pounding of the Golden Bears answeredthe question.
The answer really came on the Indi-ans (6-0, 8-0) rst possession. Bryanwas manhandled the entire game by the
Wauseon defense. The Golden Bears rstpossession gave them a taste of what their
night would hold. Bryan ran three playsthat netted 0 yards.
Enter the steam rolling Wauseon of-
fense. After an incomplete pass, NateSuntken took the handoff from Zac Rob-
inson and rumbled down the southernsideline for a 63 yard scoring jaunt. Josh
Whitcomb split the uprights and the Indi-ans were 7-0 leaders with 10:19 remaining
in the rst quarter.
After a great kickoff by Whitcomb, theGolden Bears were forced to set up shop
on their own seven yard line. After two straight runs by Brandon
Dean, who came into the game leading theleague with 917 yards rushing, lost two
yards. Add insult to injury, the Bryan punt
travelled just eight yards.Again it took the potent Indians offense
very little time to nd pay dirt. After aneight-yard run by Robinson, Jacob Flory
got six with a ve yard burst and with thatthe Tribe was up 14-0 with still 8:15 to
play in the quarter.
The Indians defense smelled bloodby this point. The strong play of familiar
names like Jacob Raabe, Noah Castle,Anthony Werder, Jacob Flory and compa-
ny took over the complexity of the game.Bryan had yet another three-and-out and
were again forced to punt. The condent
Wauseon offensive eleven came back onthe eld to again land an uppercut to the
Golden Bears.
Wauseon took possession on their own
29-yard line. Between Robinson, Suntkenand throw in a 12-yard run by Mason Cre-
ager, the Tribe were in the end zone forthe third time of the opening 12 minutes.
Robinson nished the 12-play 71 yard
drive with a two yard plunge. A kick fromWhitcomb and the Indians built a 21-0
lead with still 1:45 left.
As not to slow down their assault,Wauseon would rack up 27 more pointsduring the second quarter. Robinson de-
livered the ball on runs of three and 18
yards, then found a well covered JacobNewlove with just three ticks remaining in
the half. Nate Suntken scored his secondsix-pointer of the game with a one yard
plunge. The only thing that bothered Bry-an, as the half came to an end, was the fact
that they would have to endure 24 more
minutes of this beating. Wauseon went tothe locker room a 48-0 leader.
"Our group of seniors remembered allweek about our contest against Bryan last
season," coach Travis Cooper commented.Last year, on a questionable extra point
call, Bryan ended the Indians hope for a
league title and undefeated season fallingto the Golden Bears 28-27.
Wauseon added 13 more points the sec-ond half. Scoring for the Indians were Rob-
inson on his fourth TD of the night witha one-yard sneak, and a score by reserve
running back Dakota Valdez from 11 yards
out.Statistically Robinson led all runners
carrying the ball 17 times for 145 yards.Suntken also went over the century mark
with 114 yards on nine carries.Meanwhile, Bryan certainly felt the
wrath of the league's top defense gain-
ing just 148 total yards including just nineyards on 24 rushing attempts.
Liberty Center and Evergreen stand be-tween Wauseon from an unbeaten season
(rst since 1994) and the NWOAL champi-
onship (rst since 2007).

Stryker Loses Road Match ToHicksville In Sectionals Opener(October 16th, 2014)-HICKSVILLE: It
was a tough draw for the Lady Panthers.Traveling to Hicksville for their rst
round of sectionals action, the Stryker girlsknew their opponent would be a tough one.
The Lady Aces came into the match boast-
ing a 17-5 record for their regular season, and the atmosphere on their home court
was sure to be electric.Indeed it was, and the home court ad-
vantage proved even more difcult to ghtthrough than usual for the Panthers. Right
away, they struggled, losing the rst set
11-25. Putting game 1 out of their collec-tive mind, the Lady Panthers put every-
thing they had into game 2. Their effort
was noble, yet they still fell short 21-25
for the set. In one last comeback attempt,Stryker tried to rally late in the third set.
It wasn't quite enough, however, as theydropped the set 15-25, effectively ending
their season.
With 4 kills, sophomore Brooke Whit-lock played respectably in her rst appear-
ance in tournament play for the Panthers.Teammate Allie Frisbie set things in mo-
tion for Stryker with 8 kills to go along withher 1 ace. Audra Rupp also contributed
an ace to the team's effort, also making 2
kills. Fellow Lady Panther Brittany Breieradded 3 kills in the loss as well.

Edon Bombers Drop SectionalMatch Against Rival Edgerton
(October 16th, 2014)-EDON: It's the
stuff from which legends are made.Playing a hated rival in post-season
play, where the stakes are so much higher, adds a whole new dimension to tourna-
ment action. This very scenario came to be
when Edon was pitted against the neigh-boring Bulldogs of Edgerton. Of course,
the ve-set battle in which the two teamsengaged late in the regular season, which
saw the Lady Bombers successfully invadeEdgerton's home court, also brought an-
other element of intensity to the match.
Out for revenge, the Lady Bulldogswasted little time in making themselves at
home in the Bomber's hanger, taking game1 25-14. The Edon girls rebounded in the
second game, leading to an epic back andforth affair that seemed as though it would
never end. It did, however, and the Bomb-
ers came away with a 32-30 victory. Nei-
ther side relented in the third set, as each
side wrestled for control of the match. Itwas the Lady Bulldogs who earned the
advantage, winning the game 25-21 totake a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 saw
a depleted Bomber squad struggle. They
lost the set 12-25, suffering the pain ofnot only ending their season, but allowing
their most hated of foes to advance in thetournament as well.
Three of Edon's four seniors had strongperformances in their nal outing repre-
senting the royal blue and gray. Kaitlin
Chrisman provided 10 kills and 10 digs forthe Bombers. Fellow senior Alex Kiess led
the team in assists with 23, also making 6digs and 4 kills on the evening. Meanwhile,
Nicole Newell had 18 digs and 11 kills ina herculean effort for Edon, leading the
Bombers in both statistical categories.

AND RELEASE! ... Edon Senior Kaitlin Chrisman (1) winds back to unleash a erce
attack on the ball. She had 10 kills in the loss against Edgerton.
UP AND OVER ... Nicole Newell (3), a Senior for the Bombers, pushes the ball just

STOP AT NOTHING ... Senior Alex Kiess (4) puts her body on the line as she dives

MINE! ... Styrker Sophomore Allie Frisbie (16) bats the ball back toward her
fellow Lady Panthers as it had sailed behind most of them. She knocks it back
front and center so the team can set up a counterattack to the Hicksville as-
sault.
FOUND AN OPENING ... Junior Audra Rupp (11), of Stryker, hits the ball not
only with force, but precision as well. She intelligently placed her attack on theAces territory between the two defenders attempting to block her.

Hilltop's Season Ends In Antwerp(October 16th, 2014)-ANTWERP: The
Cadets went down ghting, completely
surrounded by Archers.
With a packed crowd cheering for theirhometown Antwerp squad, the girls of Hill-
top had more than the other six girls onthe court with which to contend. As such,
the match against the Archers was a dif-cult challenge for the Lady Cadets. Even
still, Hilltop gave it their all, battling val-
iantly in a foreign environment against astrong opponent.
Game 1 provided a slow start for theLady Cadets, who were defeated 14-25 in
the set. Despite a redoubled effort, theylost game 2 by that same score, 14-25.
The fourth set saw Hilltop refuse to losehowever, and they took the set 25-23. They
couldn't complete the comeback, though.
The Archers pulled away late in game 4,taking the set and the match 25-17. As a
silver lining to the loss, every girl on thatCadet team will be back to play next year,
as there were no seniors playing for Hilltopthis season.
Ariana Brown stood out for the Cadets
with 8 kills, 7 digs, and 2 blocks. FelicityJackson gave her team a boost with 11 as-
sists, 4 kills, 3 digs, and an ace. TeammateAllie Schmitt gave the team an impressive
21 digs on the night as well.
Lady Blackbirds Power PastNorth Central In Sectional Semis
(October 16, 2014)PETTISVILLE- The
age old saying goes something like this; Its hard to beat a team three times in the
same year. While that statement oftenholds true, it wasnt the case in the Sec-
tional Semi-nal encounter between BBC
foes Pettisville and North Central. The Blackbirds, who completed the con-
ference schedule unscathed with a recordof 10-0, had to fend off a determined effort
from the Lady Eagles. However, the hostswere able to defeat their league counter-
parts in three games.
In game one, Pettisville jumped out to asubstantial early lead. Behind solid serv-
ing and attacking, and some serving errorsby the Eagles, the Blackbirds cruised to a
25-10 victory. The three minute break between games
appeared to allow North Central to com-
pose themselves as they jumped out to 3-1lead in game two. However, Pettisville re-
sponded to the Eagle run and then somebehind some solid hitting and defense
running off 12 unanswered points to build13-3 advantage. The two teams battled
back and forth for the rest of game two,
but numerous successful attacks by thetrio of Jordyn Pursel, Dana Fricke, and
Amber Klopfenstein were too much for
North Central to counter as the Blackbirdstook the game by a nal of 25-13.
With Pettisville just one win away from
advancing to the Sectional nal, North
Central wasnt about to give up without aght. The exchange of points that ended
game two started over in game three. NorthCentral clawed and scratched their way to
a 12-11 lead, only to see Pettisville run offve straight to take a 16-12 advantage.
The trading of points occurred once again
with the Blackbirds nally moving just onepoint away from the Sectional nal as the
scoreboard read 24-16. The Eagles scoredtwo consecutive points, but inevitably the
Blackbirds got the one they needed to
down North Central and win the nal gameof the match 25-18.
Following the contest Pettisville HeadCoach John Horning shared his thoughts.
The girls have worked very hard this sea-son and it has been a lot of fun to see them
improve and grow as a team. I thought we
played very solid defensively and serving93% is a good number for us. I felt we kept
ourselves in a lot points with good hustleand decisions. I also like the fact we got a
lot of good touches at the net defensively.
Although very happy with the win, Horn-ing was not content with all facets of the
Blackbirds performance. We need to be alittle more consistent attacking at the net
with our setters and hitters. I also think
our communication needs to be strongerand more consistent.
With the win Pettisvilles record movesto 18-5 overall. Up next for the Blackbirds
are the Edgerton Bulldogs who downedEdon. When asked about his teams op-
ponent for the Sectional nal, Horning
shared. We played Edgerton over a monthago in a tri-match at Liberty Center. We
won in two very competitive games withscores of something like 25-21 and 25-19.
I know we have improved quite a bit sincethen and would assume Edgerton has
too. Karen (Meister) always has her teams
ready to compete and they also hustle allover the oor. We will need to bring our "A"
game to be successful Saturday night.Once again Pettsiville was led by the
dynamic senior duo of Fricke and Pursel.Fricke ended the night with a solid stat
line of 13 kills, 3 aces, and 13 digs. Pursel
was equally impressive accumulating 15kills, 2 aces and 15 digs, while Klopfen-
stein added 5 more kills to the total. Kate
Kauffman made many of the kills possibleas the junior setter was a perfect 32-32setting with 20 assists. Carly Bontrager
contributed to the number of successful
hits as she nished 14-14 setting with 10assists. Teagan Kauffman added 12 digs
and 3 aces, while libero Stephanie Hubbylled her roll of defensive specialist admi-
rably by adding 15 digs.Although coming out on the short end
on the scoreboard, North Central, whose
season comes to an end at 1-22 overallhas nothing to be ashamed of after the
effort put forth in the match. Eagle HeadCoach Stacy Roth shared her feelings.
Even though the record doesnt show it,
the Lady Eagles have fought hard and havecome along way this season. Good job la-
dies!Sophomores Makayla Hayes and Alys-
sa Swank led North Central with a pair ofkills, with Hayes adding 4 blocks. Senior
libero Macayla Wildrick held down the
back row with 7 digs, while classmate Ra-chel Oxender had 7 good serves for North
Central.

Montpelier Locomotive RallyAgainst Holgate Falls Short(October 16th, 2014)-HOLGATE: The
Locomotives from Montpelier run on heart,
not coal.
That heart was on display when theLady Locos traveled to Holgate to take on
the hometown Tigers in Sectionals play.
After a rough regular season, Montpelierhad every reason to simply go through themotions and gear up for next year. After
falling behind early against Holgate, lesser
teams might have done just that. But not Montpelier.
Holgate pulled away in the middle ofthe rst set, earning a solid 25-16 victory
over the Locomotives. Regrouping, Mont-pelier readied itself for a battle in game 2.
Yet they still suffered a tough 20-25 loss
in the set. With their season about to benished, the Locos responded. With poise
and passion, they claimed a close game3 25-18. Holgate redoubled their efforts,
hoping to close the match out in game 4.
The girls from Montpelier would have noneof it, however, earning a narrow 25-23 vic-
tory to force a nal set. Sadly, the come-
back fell just short of success, as the LadyLocos found themselves on the wrong sideof a very close 17-19 score in game 5.
Seniors Christy Duchene and Sidney
Houk were hustling all night, giving theirteam 38 and 31 digs, respectively. Houk
also added 12 digs and 4 assists, whileDuchene contributed 6 assists and 1
kill. Hannah Blake had another balancedmatch, making 15 kills, 15 assists, and 12
digs. Landri McKelvey also had 15 assists
to go along with her 5 aces on the evening.

I GOT IT! ... Lady Loco Senior Christy Duchene dives to dig the ball, refusing to let it
touch the ground. Duchene had 38 digs in the match.
Fayette Drops SectionalsMatch To Cardinal Stritch
(October 16th, 2014) - CARDINALSTRITCH: A late rally wasn't enough to get
Fayette back into the match.
Getting off to a slow start is tough tocome back from. Doing so on the road in
the post-season, is nearly impossible toachieve. So when Fayette fell behind early
at Cardinal Stritch, they were ghting an
uphill battle, to say the least. They tried
to get back into the match, however, andtheir efforts didn't go unnoticed.
After dropping the rst set 13-25, the
Lady Eagles lost game 2 as well, 10-25.
Stepping up in game 3, however, Fayettedominated the set 25-13. They couldn't
build on that momentum, though. Cardi-
nal Stritch took control of game 4 early, and never looked back. Fayette lost the set
8-25, allowing Stritch to move on to theSectionals Finals.
Michaela Bates led the Fayette with 6
kills, 3 digs, and a block. With 11 digs, 10
assists, and an ace, Hannah Machacekhad a strong game as well. Fellow LadyEagle McKenzee Schaffner once again hus-
tled all night, earning 20 digs in the match.

catches up to a stray ball. She is about to volley the ball back into play, where herteammates will continue to keep the play alive.

CONTINUATION OF VOLLEYBALL ACTION Wauseon Takes Down WapakanetaIn Four Sets, Advances To Districts
(October 18th, 2014)-WAUSEON: With
twenty-six aces made by the team, theLady Indians were able to overcome a game
1 loss to take the next three sets.
After enjoying a rst round bye, earnedby a strong season by the Wauseon girls,
they hosted Wapakaneta in the Section-als Finals on Saturday. The match-up was
a good one, as both teams played prettyevenly throughout the night. The Lady In-
dians showed a propensity for closing outmatches that the visiting team did not, however, which made all the difference.
Having said that, Wapakaneta didtake a tight game 1 25-23, taking the ini-
tial lead in the series. That wouldn't last,
though. Wauseon came back in game 2,
pulling away late to win the set 25-20.Game 3 was more of the same, as the In-
dians again claimed a 25-20 victory. Game
4 saw the Lady Indians again closed outa determined Wapakaneta team, earning a
25-19 win.Thanks to her 17 digs, 7 kills, and 7
aces, Wauseon's Kierra Fountain was amajor factor in the match. Hayley Cham-
berlain added 17 assists and 2 blocks forthe Lady Indians.Sariah Yackee contribut-ed 21 digs and 3 aces in the victory as well.
The win advances the girls of Wauseoninto districts.
Pettisville Blackbirds DominateEdgerton, Moves On To Districts
(October 18th, 2014)-PETTISVILLE: It
may have been a rematch, but Edgertonhad no idea into what they were walking.
Pettisville had played the Lady Bulldogsearlier in the year, as part of a tri-match.
The Lady Blackbirds won that match
in straight sets, though both were hardfought. Edgerton was expecting a different
result when they trekked to Pettisville'shome court in the Sectionals Finals.
And they got a different result, just notthe one for which they were hoping.
The Lady Blackbirds controlled the se-
ries, winning all three games convincingly.Game 1 was a 25-13 victory for the home
team. Edgerton really struggled in game
2, losing the set 10-25. The Lady Bulldogs
had a heroic run in game 3, with the Pet-tisvile girls a single point away from win-
ning the match. Edgerton responded byring off several points in a row and re-
fusing to let the ball touch the court. They
couldn't keep it up all night, however, andthe Blackbirds eventually won the set 25-
16.Jordyn Pursel had an incredible match
for Pettisville, making 22 digs, 12 kills, and5 aces. Teammate Dana Fricke added an
astounding 18 kills and 4 blocks, as well
as 5 digs. Kate Kauffman managed 28 as-sists, 7 digs, 5 kills, 3 aces, and a block in
the win.

MISS IT BY THIS MUCH ... Pursel (9) attacks the net, sending the ball screaming into
Edgerton territory as a Bulldog defender times her block a second incorrectly. The LadyBlackbird senior went on to make 12 kills in such a fashion, also making 5 aces and 22
digs on the evening for Pettisville.
MY TURN ... Kate Kauffman (12), a junior for Pettisville goes above the net to send theball Edgertons way. Kauffman is used to setting up her teammates for such tasks, mak-
ing 28 assists in this game alone, but has been known to make a few kills herself from
time to time.

Pettisville Beats Liberty
Center, Advance In Sectionals(October 14, 2014)-PETTISVILLE: Intheir rst sectional game of the post-sea-son, the Blackbirds played host to theLiberty Center Tigers. They weren't very
hospitable, however, as they defeated theTigers 5-0 in the match.
A major reason for Pettisville's scoringbinge was the sheer number of shots they
took at the at the Liberty Center goal. The
hometown Blackbirds targeted the visiting
team's net twenty times in total, compared
to the Tigers' miser two.At least ve of those shots came from
Jakob Waidelich, Jordan Bontrager, JoshLiechty, Matt Hulbert, and Nick Brink,
who each contributed a goal to the Pettis-ville victory effort.
Wauseon Takes Down CentralCatholic To Advance In Sectionals
(October 15th, 2014): In post-season
play, the Lady Indians of Wauseon wontheir rst match in sectional play against
Toledo Central Catholic. Shutting out theiropponent, the Wauseon girls took the
game 2-0.Vital to keeping Central scoreless was
Keeper Hannah Spadafore, who deect-
ed all seven of their attempts on the In-
dian goal. On the other end of the eld,Wauseon managed nine shots at Central's
net.Making both Lady Indian goals was
Freshman Jayedlin Vasvery, who contin-ues her sensational rst venture into the
high school soccer world.
Pettisville Blackbirds LoseTo Ottawa Hills In Sectionals
(October 18th, 2014)-OTTAWA HILLS:
Playing on the road in the post-season isone of the most difcult things a team can
do. With so much on the line, and a largerthen average crowd cheering on their de-
mise, a traveling team nds itself under aspecial type of pressure.
This appeared to be the case when the
Blackbirds of Pettisville took on OttawaHills on the Toledo team's home eld. The
result of the match was a 3-0 loss for Pet-
tisville. The most surprising aspect of the de-
feat, however, is that the Blackbirdsweren't able to take a single shot at the
Ottawa Hills goal. Perhaps Ottawa Hills issimply that solid a defensive team, but at-
tempting zero shots at an opponents goal
is rare for this Pettisville team.

With the Fall Junior High School sports
season at a close, North Central held its
annual Junior High Fall Sports Awardsceremony in the school's high school au-
ditorium. All North Central Junior HighAthletes were in attendance for the event,
as their respective coaches discussed theirseasons and individual performances.
Kicking off the ceremony, the Eighth
Grade Volleyball team was called up tothe stage by their coach, Sarah Maneval.
Seven girls in total comprised the unit, andthey all stood before the crowd as Coach
Maneval praised the effort each one gave
this past season. The Eighth Grade squad was followed
by their Seventh Grade counterparts, coached by Sally Wheeler. Coach Wheeler
was quite spirited in her approach to theceremony, handing out individualized cut-
out awards to each of her ten athletes.
Golf was the next sport to take centerstage. Coach Brent Saneholtz rst spoke of
the team's impressive season. It's probably one of the better years
we've ever had. With seven of his eleven golfers averag-
ing a fty-ve or better, that's likely to be
true.Coach Saneholtz, in his second year,
then invited each of his eleven golfers to
the the platform one at a time. First camethe Eighth Graders, six in number, with
Saneholtz reecting on each golfer's prog-ress throughout the season and wishing
them well in their high school careers. Nextcame the ve Seventh Graders, with spe-
cial attention payed to youthful sensations
Jay Garret and Chace Boothman, who, between the two of them, earned medalist
honors in nearly half of their matches. To close the event, Cross Country
Coach Jared Stewart lined his team ontothe stage. He began by singled out the only
two girls on the squad, Madelynn Scott
and Stephanie Loney, both Eighth Grad-ers. Loney had improved her time from
21:56 to 17:10 during the course of theseason, while Scott experienced similar
gains in her time, jumping from 20:56 to
16:10.Coach Stewart then took a moment
to talk about his team's efforts this past
season. The Eagles came in fourth placein the Buckeye Border Conference with a
record of 58-56. After losing key contribu-tors in 2013, some expected the team to
nish dead last in the league. They werecompetitive throughout the season, how-
ever.
We were always ghting for second orthird. Coach Stewart proclaimed.
He went on to call the name of each ofthe seven boys on the unit. As they went to
shake his hand, the crowd was informedof each runner's best time for the year, as
well their goal times.
The awards ceremony concluded after-ward, with each and every student athlete
in attendance acknowledged during itsproceedings. Such is a proper send off for
the Eighth Graders, as they enroll in high
school next year.
