An argument that carries weight! VIAPONT ® LIGHTENED ASPHALT CONCRETE

DESCRIPTION

Every engineering structure and especially every bridge faces unavoidable constraints among those a limited weight admissible on the bridge deck which has to be respected during its lifetime. This constraint is then translated by a limited road thickness (without waterproofing) defined by the design of the structure since its conception. Depending on pathologies found during the life time of the structure (flow, excessive constraints…), the operator can also be asked to search for limits of overloads including maintenance works of the road.

Viapont an argument that carries weight!

Every engineering structure and especially every bridge faces unavoidable constraints among

those a limited weight admissible on the bridge deck which has to be respected during its

lifetime. This constraint is then translated by a limited road thickness (without waterproofing)

defined by the design of the structure since its conception. Depending on pathologies found

during the life time of the structure (flow, excessive constraints…), the operator can also be

asked to search for limits of overloads including maintenance works of the road.

The innovation capacity of Eurovia allowed to elaborate a new asphalt concrete which

guarantees a gain of weight up to 40% compared to a conventional asphalt concrete, while

keeping comparable mechanical performances; this new type of asphalt concrete is called

Viapont®.

key benefits

a considerable gain of weight

Its modulus, between 6.000 and 9.000MPa, allows to satisfy an application as a special process on bridges.

Viapont® is produced in a mixing plant and applied by conventional road means with high rate. All Eurovia divisions have these equipments which allow to consider the Viapont® solution on the whole territory.

The first tests carried out showed that the behavior of Viapont® is similar to the one of a conventional road base asphalt and the aspect is similar.

The laying thickness will be the one of a road base asphalt, to be determined depending on the traffic expected on the bridge. The compaction, as carried out on a bridge, will be without vibration.

To minimize the weight of the asphalt concrete, the research had been orientated to the selection of light aggregates.

A conventional bitumen is sufficient to obtain good characteristics. The adding of an anti-stripping agent and a high binder content arise from the nature itself of the basic aggregates of the formula.

Viapont® shows a rutting resistance comparable to the conventional asphalt concretes with 5.2% determined for 10,000 cycles (NF EN 12697-22). The used 35/50 bitumen allows to achieve the required specifications for a road base asphalt 0/14 class 2 up to the level 2 of the mix design (NF EN 13108-1).

During the construction of a bridge, the planned

maintenance works can be taken into account and the

structure designed as a consequence. The problem of

possible overload arises more particularly for those

already in operation. Viapont® is then naturally rather

designated to the maintenance works on engineering

structures than to new works.

The patented Viapont® technique offers a wider latitude in order to answer to the problems of several clients whose concern is to present a simple, efficient and economical technical solution regarding the roads while avoiding the overload of engineering structures. The "lightness" of the asphalt concrete authorizes a more important application thickness that allows to adapt to a current level of the road present on the bridge.

The refurbishment works on the bridges can be considerably reduced by the use of Viapont®.The realization fastness and a jobsite area less important also allow to limit the inconvenience occasioned for the user and then to limit the exploitation loss. This finally represents a non-negligible gain of time and means, consequently a substantial economy.

Viapont® will be also favored when its low weight will prove itself as a key benefit, for example to carry out the asphalt concretes of car parks built on roofs or on car parks intermediary floors

By substituting a layer of 11cm of conventional asphalt concrete for 16cm of the light asphalt concrete Viapont®, the works regarding the upgrade of the corresponding equipment and of the road downward and in front of the bridge are highly reduced: neither a necessity of upgrade of the equipments such as security barriers on the edges of the bridge, nor a need of complete planing of the existing road on the bridge and this on a length of 50 to 100 meters on both sides of the resurfacing works.
