Asphalt concrete pavements  or flexible pavements

• Asphalt concrete is a composite material made of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). It is a combination of approximately 95% of aggregates bound together by asphalt cement or bitumen, at an elevated temperature. 

• According to EUROBITUME in 2011, the world consumption of bitumen was approximately 102 million tones per year, 85% of which is used in flexible pavements. 

• By weight, bitumen generally accounts approximately for 5% of HMA and makes up to 25%‐30% of the cost of asphalt concrete.

Weakening of flexible pavements over time

Like everything else asphalt pavements have a life cycle.While aging and during its normal use under the weight of traffic and weather conditions, pavements tend to show some distresses/failures .

Three broad problems can be solved in this topic

distresses/failures of flexible pavements are mostly due to factors such as:‐ Rain water;

‐ Temperature(hot or cold climatic areas);

‐Fatigue cracking;

‐Aging (life cycle deterioration);

‐Aggregate or Binder quality and their mixing design. 

Rutting (depression) formation under the weight of vehicles . It is caused by accumulatedplastic deformation

Scrap tires are solid waste that pollute the environment.They  are one of the world’s most troublesome solid waste problems, causing an environmental nightmare. their combustion releases toxic gases into the atmosphere, which are harmful to wildlife and to the flora as well as human’s  health

3. Plastic waste

Plastic waste, just like scrap tires affect the environment, waterways, oceans, wildlife and humans.

Crumb Rubber as Modifier

Scrap tires are one of the world’s most troublesome solid waste problems, causing an environmental nightmare .

Charles MC Donald, a former Phoenix city engineer, developed in the 1960s a way of blending scrap tire rubber with bitumen, to create an improved paving material, a modified asphalt concrete also called asphalt rubber.

• It is a result of 30 years of laboratory testing and field‐testing. It has proven that adding crumb rubber from old tires to conventional bitumen produces a durable pavement that lasts much longer.

• During the process of making CRUMB RUBBER ROADS, the steel is removed from the tires, and the obtained rubber is chopped and grind into a fine granular material called crumb rubber.

• This material is transported to asphalt construction plant where it is blended with bitumen under a time and temperature formula, inside a large tank for about an hour. The rubber reacts with asphalt to form an asphalt rubber binder. 

• According to the established ASTM (American Society for Testing Material) standard the blend must contain at least 15% of rubber by weight.

• The resulting mixing can be used as a spray applied membrane, or mixed with aggregates to create an asphalt rubber hot mix. The mixture is applied with a paving machine to provide a firm highway surface. 

Benefits of using crumb rubber as modifier• Crumb rubber is successful in increasing asphalt 

binder stiffness at high temperatures.

• The rubber‐aggregate solves the problem of permanent deformation and thermal cracking.

• The paving remain flexible in all climates, hence it is suitable for tropical regions.

• It resist to cracking that double pavement life.• It also reduces considerably the cost of flexible roads 

construction as the binder asphalt‐ rubber contains 15% of rubber by weight.

• It reduces traffic noise, and increases tire traction for better safety.

• In addition disposal of waste tires will no longer be a problem. 

• The use of waste tires in the asphalt concrete road construction has helps to provide better place for recycling the used tires.

• At the same time, durable roads are constructed . 

Recycled Plastic Waste

In this process waste plastics are collected and cut into small pieces using shredded machines. 

There are two methods of adding plastics to the aggregate‐binder mixture. The dry process, where aggregate is heated to 170oC in the hot mixes plant and shredded plastic waste is added.

• Aggregates are heated to 170oC and transferred in a mixing chamber. 

• Similarly the bitumen is to be heated to 160oC. 

• At the mixing chamber the shredded plastic is to be added to the hot aggregates that get coated uniformly within 30 to 60 seconds.

• The obtained plastic coated aggregate is then mixed with hot bitumen and the resulted mixture is therefore used for road construction.

• The road laying temperature of plastic asphalt is between 110oC to 120oC.

On the other hand, the wet process is characterized by blinding plastic waste with asphalt cement, by directly mixing shredded plastics with hot bitumen at 160oC.

However the wet process is not commonly used since it requires a lot of investment and bigger plants.

Benefits of using plastic waste as modifier 

• The durability of the roads lay out with shredded waste plastics is much more compared to roads made out of ordinary mix.

• A typical example that shows the benefits of using recycled plastics in asphalt roads construction is the JAMBULINGAM Street plastic road, one of India’s first plastic roads built in the year 2002.

• This plastic road has remained in good conditions for many years, it has not developed the mosaic of cracks, potholes or craters that typically make their appearance after rough weather conditions. while many other roads in the same region got damaged. 

• This area of India has weathered a major flood, several monsoons, recurring heat waves; and also a steady stream of cars, trucks and auto rickshaws, without showing the usual signs of distress 16 years after its construction.

• Some more benefits are that the cost of road construction is significantly decreased;

• there is almost no maintenance cost; • and disposal of waste plastics will no longer be a 

problem;• Moreover it Improves road infrastructure.
