Origins• Magnesium oxide or magnesia occurs

naturally as ore, mostly it is created by roasting magnesite (magnesium carbonate) at +/- 600 deg C. It is the 7th most prevalent mineral in the earth crust.

• Magnesium chloride is either mined, extracted from sea water or synthesized.

Qualities of magnesium oxychloride cement• Absorbs net 0.6 tonne C02 / tonne creating

magnesium carbonate, a strengthening agent. (co2 weakens Portland cement )

• compressive strength to 10,000 psi (70MPa)• binds with wood, sawdust, sand, rock dust etc• some leaching of MgCl after long term

immersion, a self correcting issue.

Magnum Manufacturing process• magnesium oxide (>40%), magnesium chloride

(<20%), cellulose (<10%), perlite (<5%) non- toxic additives (<2%) are mixed with water into a slurry & cast onto a Mylar sheet with embedded fibreglass mesh (<1%). It cures at 30 Celsius for 24 hours before removing from the casting tray and conditions a further 8 days at ambient temp before trimming, sanding & edge machining.

Methods of processing• sawing, circular, table, jig, hand and rotary• routing, carbide or diamond tooling• sanding, can be machine sanded• fastening, pneumatic nailers, staplers. All

screws with self counter boring heads. Hand nailing using a center punch to set. Fasteners should be coated against corrosion.

Currently used material challenges

Wood based products: Swells, rots, susceptible to insects such as termites and carpenter ants, flammable, can feed mold and mildew and when chemically treated may be toxic.

Portland cement based products: Respirable dust can be carcinogenic , difficult to work with (heavy), excessive expansion and contraction challenges.

Gypsum Based products: Susceptible to water and fire damage, known to feed mold and mildew, and is currently experiencing high rates of litigation due to chemical compounds that contribute to respiratory diseases and is corrosive to metals

COST TO UNITED STATES RESULTING FROM KNOWN INDUSTRY PROBLEMS

Fire: According to a 2010 National Fire Protection Agency report, $18.6 billion in property damage was caused by fire.

Water: According to AMI, water intrusion is the primary reason for mold and mildew. In addition to this cost, as noted below, billions more are spent annually on water damage repair.

Insects: Western Pest Services reports that over $2 billion are spent annually on pest control and another $5 billion on pest damage and this covers TERMITES ONLY.
