Chapter 3:

Our Pasts Define Our Futures

Our pasts define our futures.

Last time we learned that there were some shady characters in Belladonna Cove who were looking for someone called the “Diviner”. Just who is this Diviner and why is Captain Black Star looking for them? The answer is in the past, Geodessa’s

past…

A palace in a long ago forgotten place, it carries with it memories of a past.

“Are you certain of this? Can it be so after so long?”

“Yes, I am most certain; they have returned.”

“Black Star has returned, and he is after our Diviner. I have foreseen it.”

“And there is no way to change this vision?”

“I am afraid not. It will happen as it is meant to.”

Geodessa looked over her table, her mages were very agitated about her fate. And despite her calm exterior, the Master Diviner was scared; she had always feared that someday the pirate lord would come back for her and her subordinates, together the six of them helped to build this kingdom and make its king very powerful. Their abilities to locate deposits of gemstones, minerals and metals made them targets for those who were ruled by their greed and lust for power. And Captain Black Star was one of those who were seeking to control her Guild.

Geodessa: Nephrite, Chrysocolla; my dear friends, we knew this day would come our powers are legendary and the tales of them reach even the

farthest of lands. Many have come to try and steal us; to use our powers to further their own ends, you all knew this coming into the Guild of Diviners.

Malachite, the second in command under Geodessa, closed his eyes regretfully. He had known that this day would come, but he didn’t think it

would be in his lifetime.

“Do we have to fight him? We are not soldiers; we’re mages.”

Vanadinite regarded her seat mate sharply.

“So? We have our own powers, we can fight if we have to. Besides, the king’s soldiers are away fighting in the war across the sea; they

left the kingdom with minimal guard. We can’t count on them to help us.”

Malachite: I suppose…

Across from Vanadinite, her older sister Jadeite sighed.

“Vana, you are always so eager to get into fights and battles. I never understood why that was.”

Vanadinite: I just don’t like to be a pawn in a power struggle. I want to be able to defend myself.

Chrysocolla: I am hesitant to admit it, but Vana does have a point about wanting to protect one’s own person; I often feel that way

myself.

Jadeite: Don’t encourage her.

Chrysocolla: I am merely stating a fact; we have many more abilities and powers than what we use for divining gem deposits, we are

mages as Malachite stated earlier.

Nephrite: That may be true but we are not combat trained. The king did not see a need to train us for it, we were merely his accountants

so to speak.

Chrysocolla: I would think that present circumstances would require we be trained immediately, do you not agree?

Nephrite: I do agree; but I still do not want to have to fight.

Malachite: I, umm that is to say, I have some combat experience. The captain of the guards showed me some moves with a sword. Though I

haven’t used them in years, it may be time to do so now. How long until Black Star breaches the defences?

Chrysocolla: On the morrow; it will be soon.

Malachite: That is not much time to show you anything.

Vanadinite: You’ve been holding out on us Mal. Why didn’t you say you knew how to use a sword?

Malachite: As I said before; we are mages, not soldiers. It wasn’t necessary to say anything before now.

Geodessa: We should be ready. I do not like violence but if we must engage in it to protect ourselves then so be it. Tomorrow we will be

ready, I suggest everyone try to get some rest tonight.

Vanadinite: I’ll be doing some training; but I will try to remember to rest Mistress.

The other four nodded in agreement with her.

As predicted Black Star breached the defences and made it inside the palace; while his pirates fought outside, he took his best mate inside;

Rya was his best fighter, and his wife.

Rya: Where is the Diviner!???!!

Vanadinite: You’ll never get close enough to her, I’ll take you out right here!!

Rya: You’ll regret that bitch!! YAA!!

She drew a curved dagger from her thigh hilt and lunged for Vana; however Vana was faster and much more agile, she side stepped

her easily sending the blond into a rage.

Vanadinite: You’re too slow to even catch me!!

Vanadinite charged up her energy ball; she’d spent the entire night on it, perfecting it. The look of shock and surprise in Rya’s eyes only

served to increase Vanadinite’s glee.

“Any last regrets, before I vaporize you?”

Rya gritted her teeth and prepared another attack.

Vanadinite pulled back; this was it.

“This is the end for you…”

Black Star: How is it yee know how to use that??!!

Malachite: I have many skills; leave you’ll never take our Diviner!!

Black Star knew his conquest was not going well; the screams of his men and the fight his wife was in with the pink one were all compounding against him. This raid was poorly

executed from the start…however he still had his ace in the hole.

Black Star: Yee thing yer the only one with powers? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!!

A piercing scream shattered the air; Malachite knew it was Geodessa’s scream, he ran back into the palace to find her.

Malachite made it just in time to see his Mistress get sucked into a vortex, her screams became distorted and echoed as she fell in. He

did the only thing he could think of; he jumped in after her.

Vanadinite had followed him, having dealt with Rya sufficiently enough. She saw what was happening, she was terrified. Hearing her mistress scream so horribly

and watching her fall into the gaping hole of the vortex; overrode everything else. Malachite jumped in after her, and Vana after him…

They knew not where this vortex would lead, or what they’d find on the other side but the two loyal subjects were not about to let their mistress face it alone.

The vortex did lead somewhere; however, it was not exactly where Malachite and Vanadinite had expected it to…or when they expected

it to end up.

Samantha Cordial had to make sure she heard this right; and she asked the strange green-clad man once more how he ended up in her

living room.

Samantha: Where did you say you came from again?

Malachite: As I told you once already, strange glowing woman; the vortex dropped us here. We are looking for our mistress.

Malachite: What more must I say?

Samantha: Well, I’d say this qualifies as strange and out of the ordinary. I just hope Lord Gabriel is not too upset about being summoned at 4 am…

Malachite: Is this Lord Gabriel your ruler?

Samantha: Yeah, kinda I suppose.

Malachite: Then I wish to speak to him, immediately.

Gabriel came; having been yanked out of his bed by Samantha’s summoning spell he was ready to kill her. It was 4 am for gods’ sake!!

“Okay, you had BETTER have a VERY good reason for summoning me at this ungodly hour Samantha!!”

Vanadinite: A sorcerer!! I had thought they were extinct!!

Malachite: Are you her master? I must speak with you urgently.

Gabriel: Okay, this is a good reason. Who are you?

Malachite: I am Malachite; Echelon rank 1, sub-level A. My companion and I are seeking our mistress, she was spirited away to this place by a

vortex of great power.

Gabriel: Echelon rank mages do not have the rights to exist in this dimension; you should know this being a first level Echelon.

Malachite: We are seeking our mistress; and I know we are not allowed in this dimension, but she is missing and our dimension cannot exist for

long without her.

Gabriel: How do you know she’s here?

Malachite: We followed her aura, her magic is in this dimension. You should know that an aura cannot be lost when it is tracked.

Gabriel: Ani-Mei’s gonna kill me; I know it. Yes, that is true but why should I tell you anything? How do I know you’re not a spy?

Malachite: We are not; otherwise we’d be a pile of dust right now.

Malachite: Her name is Geodessa; she’s got skin the colour of a perfect lilac bloom and eyes as green as the verdant grasses of spring. She is

the most benevolent and kind mistress to ever lead the Guild of Diviners. Surely, you must know of her being a sorcerer of such

immense power.

Gabriel: I know who she is…but…

Malachite: But what? Do not tell me something wicked has befallen her??!!

Gabriel: Dude, relax she’s alive and well. Only she’s married now and she has four children in college, she’s an Elder.

Malachite: No… it can’t be, I just saw her, she was young and—I don’t understand. How is this possible?

Gabriel: Your dimension runs on a slower time stream than ours does, and because you’ve landed here I’m afraid the same time stream will

eventually age you two as well…

Malachite was thunderstruck; and Vanadinite hadn’t taken a breath since she found out her mistress was an Elder. Gabriel shook his head,

the poor guy had no idea what he landed in.

Gabriel: You still have some time before you begin to age rapidly; though getting Geodessa back won’t be easy, she has a family now

and I doubt very much she’ll want to leave them.

Samantha: Is there nothing you can do for them my Lord? Can’t you prevent them from aging?

Gabriel: I don’t know Sam, Ani-Mei should know about this before I do anything. I’m sorry Malachite, really I am.

Malachite: We can’t age, our dimension is in turmoil; we need our mistress back before it all collapses…please, can you do anything to

help us?

Samantha: You have access to time stopping spells, you’re an A level warlock! You could suspend them in time until they get this sorted out.

Gabriel: Samantha…you have no idea what you’re asking me to do…I can’t just stop time for anyone you know. Ani-Mei will kill me if I mess

with her…ahem, never mind.

Samantha: Please?

Gabriel: Okay, here’s what I’ll do; I’ll talk to Ani-Mei and see what she thinks about this and what I should do with you. In the meantime, don’t go causing trouble around here. And Sam, I’m putting these two under your care you’re

responsible for watching them, don’t let them out of your sight until I get back.

Malachite: Are we prisoners now?

Gabriel: Look, Mal buddy you and your pink chick friend over there are illegal dimension jumpers, you’re lucky I don’t kick your asses right back to where you

came from. I’m doing you a favour, don’t make me regret it.

Malachite: I see. So were are prisoners then.

Vanadinite: Remember what I said about not wanting to be a pawn in a power struggle? Yeah, this is EXACTLY why…

Samantha: I’m sorry you two, really I am. But I’m not going to mistreat you, you are guests here in my opinion.

Gabriel headed back home, explaining this to Ani-Mei would be a pain in the ass, he was certain to get reamed out for it…

Gabriel: So…

Ani-Mei: So…

Gabriel: What do I do with them?

Ani-Mei: What I really want to know is how Samantha knows about your abilities. That is what’s bothering me the most.

Gabriel: She knows nothing real. She doesn’t know what I really am.

Ani-Mei: If she found out you were a god, I’d hate to see what that would do to this place. I wanted to keep that on the down low brother,

remember?

Gabriel: I’m not stupid; I know that.

Ani-Mei: And the two illegals, what do they know?

Gabriel: They want to take Geodessa back, but again they know nothing real.

Ani-Mei: That’s not going to happen; she stays here.

Gabriel: I figured you’d say that. So what do I tell them then?

Ani-Mei: Only what they need to know; the rules of this dimension. Geodessa stays here, for now.

Gabriel: They won’t like that; they really believe that their dimension needs Geodessa to maintain itself.

Ani-Mei: And they’re right, that place is unstable and until I figure out how they managed to gain control over the vortex, things will be

uncomfortable around here for them.

Gabriel: For Malachite and Vanadinite or Black Star?

Ani-Mei: Both. They are diametrically opposed to one another; destined to come into conflict once more. Samantha will not be able to contain them once they realize Black Star is hunting Geodessa’s

heir. Olivenite has no idea what he’s going to have to face.

Gabriel: Are you okay with that? I know how much you like Olivenite.

Ani-Mei: Non-interference remember? They can’t find out what we are…as much as it hurts me to not interfere.

Gabriel: I understand that. Those mortals have a way of endearing themselves to you.

Ani-Mei: Oh? Speaking from experience are we brother? You don’t have a thing for Samantha do you?

Gabriel: No more than I do for Jillian…

Ani-Mei: Did I not just say non-interference?

Gabriel: Yeah…you did.

Ani-Mei: Watching Black Star is going to be my utmost priority; I will do what I can to protect Olivenite and his heirs for as long as I can maintain it.

Gabriel: And I suppose I’ll have to keep dodging Sam’s questions about my powers and what I’m willing to do for her.

Ani-Mei: And dodging her is what you’ll do; you have that raunchy Romance side of yours to contend with, no interbreeding with the mortals…at least by you. Chanteri,

well he’s another story; and your problem.

Gabriel: Don’t remind me, he’s become too close to Breccia for my comfort truth be told.*****

Meanwhile, at La Fiesta Tech…

Basalt: You’ll regret that Llama boy!! I never miss!!

Skylar(Llama Boy): You couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn Salty!!

Breccia: Oh no, he DID NOT just call her Salty!! He’s so dead now!!

Onyx: Incoming!! Rage of the Bad Apple!!

Obsidian: Any last requests Llama?

Skylar: Yeah, NO MERCY!!

*aims for Breccia, misses horribly*

Breccia: That was way off, now who can’t hit the broad side of a barn? I thought you had 10 Active points Llama Boy?

Skylar: Shut up!!

Breccia: Sore spot huh? Nail him Onyx!!

Onyx: Can’t!! Ollie’s singling me out!! NO FAIR!!

Olivenite: You just happen to be there!!

Obsidian: You’re not the only one he’s after!! Just cuz he’s the heir, he thinks he can get away with anything!!

Olivenite: I can and will, I’m also the youngest and the only boy; I am untouchable!! Favouritism FTW!!

Olivenite: Now who’s next?

*grins evilly*

Hours later…

Basalt: So now that you’re in charge of the family, what are we doing for Junior year?

Olivenite: Well you know mom wants one of us to get all the vacation memories we can, so I was thinking we’d hit Three Lakes first. I hear there’s a Big Foot rumoured to be living around there. I want to meet

him.

Basalt: Isn’t Three Lakes like cold? Year round?

Olivenite: Yeah, it’s the mountains. And besides, I’ve had enough of the desert heat for a while, I welcome the break to the cold.

Basalt: Well you’re the heir…I guess I should go buy some mukluks and a parka.

Six hours, and three thousand miles later…

Basalt: I like the cold. Don’t you?

Obsidian: My ears are frozen, my lips look like raw hamburger, and this damn raincoat thing does nothing to keep my ass from freezing off…good flapjacks

though.

Basalt Okay then…good talking to you.

The heir however was having a blast.

Olivenite: Hey now, don’t lose your footing—

*splash*

Too late. WHO DA MAN??!!

Olivenite: Who is DL?

Basalt: Hey little bro, Obsidian’s freezing her ass off. She wanted me to tell you that.

Olivenite: Yeah, okay we can go once I finish reading this tree slice. Mom wants to know what it says.

Basalt: You’re gonna make your older sister suffer in this cold just so you can read some tree?

Olivenite: Heir. I rule remember?

Basalt: Brat.

Olivenite: Yep. And damn proud too.

But he got what was coming to him.

Olivenite: Come on sis, we’re squared right? Did you really have to soak all my underwear then freeze it solid to get back at me? I hate wearing

these girly things…they’re too tight and choking the boys…

Obsidian said nothing. Breccia snickered; it was so much fun torturing their little brother with the dreaded silent treatment.

Olivenite: Onyx, can you please get them to talk to me? The stares and glares are creepy and unnerving…

Onyx: Sorry baby bro, girl power. I stick with them.

Olivenite: Why couldn’t I have had four older brothers instead?

Olivenite: Maybe if I give them a whole treasure chest, that way they might actually talk to me again…hmm.

Next time, we’ll see the conclusion of their first vacation and the first one to start collecting all 45 vacation mementos. I

chose Olivenite to be the one for the second generation only because I adore the kid. I do hope that this introduction of

plotz was not too sudden or off the wall, I know the first three chapters were nothing like this one was. But I just had to do it,

I am thoroughly impressed with this chapter; I found myself getting excited just writing it!! I hope that you guys find the

same when you get to the end.
