Grace Methodist Church is privileged to be the convening church for this year’s MWS charity golf tournament.

If you have young children, you may be familiar with a game called ‘Putt Putt saves the Zoo’. In this game, Putt-Putt, a little car has to rescue the zoo animals and return them to Outback Al before the Zoo’s grand-opening.

Well, perhaps your ‘putting’ may not be as heroic, it nevertheless will help the many beneficiaries of MWS. On behalf of GMC, I would like to thank the golfers for taking time off to participate in this event. We would also like to thank the churches and donors who have donated generously.

Although you may think that your generosity isn’t much, Jesus reminds us that we are doing it for him and that is what counts, “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to me.”

Amen and amen. And may you have a wonderful ‘putting’ time.

Chairman, Board of Governance,Methodist Welfare Services

This is the 25th anniversary of the annual MWS Charity Golf Tournament. Praise the Lord!

In 1989, the late Dr Tay Eng Soon and the late Mr Edwin Chan founded the tournament to foster fellowship among Methodists from our various churches. More than 100 golfers participated in the inaugural event convened by Barker Road Methodist Church. About $10,000 was raised, and this was kindly donated to MWS. The event was a huge success, and it soon became established as an annual event convened by our Methodist churches in turn. We are very grateful

to the various churches which have convened this event over the years.Through God’s grace, Fellowship on the Greens has grown over the years, and is now the

flagship fund raising event in MWS’ calendar. However, it is more than just a fund raising event. It is a much valued opportunity for MWS to share its work and ministry directly with Methodists from all our churches.

This year, we have received overwhelming response for the flight bookings and sincerely thank each and every one of you for your strong support. It is always encouraging to see our loyal supporters from the Methodist community, coming together year after year for a day of golf, fellowship and camaraderie.

Grace Methodist Church has done a marvellous job convening the 25th anniversary of this tournament, and we are truly grateful for their sacrificial contributions. We are also very grateful to Dr Tan Cheng Bock for gracing the occasion as our Guest-of-Honour, and also for agreeing to play his ukulele for us!

On behalf of MWS and the beneficiaries, I thank all participants and sponsors for your generous support. May all of you enjoy a wonderful day of fun, fellowship and food together!

Guest-of-HonourIt is very heartening and encouraging to see organisations like Methodist Welfare Services serve the poor and needy in our society. As members of the community, we should do our best to support them and their efforts to continue helping people in need. Our contribution need not be anything big or elaborate. It can be as simple as coming together to play a game of golf. It is therefore my honour and pleasure to join in this very special celebration of the 25th anniversary of the MWS Charity Golf Tournament, their mainstay event.

I wish MWS every success in this event and that everyone will have a very special day. Every contribution will go a long way in helping the underprivileged in our society.Enjoy the game and fellowship!

Dr Tan Cheng BockMP Ayer Rajah (1980 - 2006)Presidential Candidate (2011)

Chairman, Organising Committee, MWS Charity Golf 2013This year, MWS Fellowship on the Greens Charity Golf celebrates its Special 25th Anniversary with thanksgiving. One of the main aims of the event is to raise funds to help at-risk children and youth, distressed families, and the elderly, sick, destitute and those with advanced illnesses.

This event also presents an annual opportunity to bring together Methodists, friends and fellow supporters for fellowship on the greens.

It is the organising committee’s privilege to participate in this annual event. And on behalf of MWS, the committee would like to thank all

the golfers, donors, sponsors, advertisers, and each of you who played a part, however small, in putting together this good work as the Lord has commanded us to do (Ephesians 2:10). I also wish to thank Vincent and all committee members, and not forgetting representatives from MWS, Pearl and Bernadette, for their faithful service of working together in unity towards one goal.

By God’s grace, all available flights have been taken up and may God be glorified. For donating to MWS, and for those still contemplating donating, your donations are eligible

for 2.5 times tax deduction.Working together for His Glory.

Since the very first Fellowship on the Greens in 1989, golf enthusiasts from the Methodist churches of Singapore have come together every year without fail to help raise funds for the poor and needy.

2013 is the 25th round of this unique Fellowship through Golfing, and Methodist Welfare Services celebrates the highlights and milestones of years past.

This golf tournament’s purpose is expressed succinctly by Mr Cecil Wong, 90, our long-time supporter who has played almost every year since the very first tournament: “The main idea was to get the members of the various churches to come together and socialise.”

Like Mr Cecil Wong, many Christian and non-Christian supporters and sponsors have united in a spirit of enthusiasm for golf as well as generosity for our needy beneficiaries, promising the sustained success of Fellowship on the Greens year after year.

Indeed, Fellowship on the Greens is now in a league of its own as a powerful fundraising and networking platform for Methodists across Singapore to engage in a meaningful cause while playing their beloved sport together.

METHODIST WELFARE SERVICES:

Serving with Love

FamilyWorks Community Services addresses a social service gap in Punggol, tapping on neighbourhood schools to run parenting and family education programmes and activities.Walk With the Poor Programme provides financial support and befriending to over 500 chronically poor families. Methodist church members visit the families every month to deliver a cash cheque and offer social support.

MWS has four community outreach services that care for the elderly who are sick, poor and destitute.Agape Methodist Hospice (Homecare) provides palliative home care as well as social and emotional support for those suffering from end of life illnesses like cancer.Bethany Methodist Nursing Home houses over 300 elderly residents, 90% of whom are bedridden. Doctors, nurses and allied health workers provide round-the-clock care to ensure their comfort and safety.Christalite Methodist Home gives shelter and care to about 200 residents who are aged and destitute. Many have psychiatric illnesses and are wheelchair bound.Wesley Seniors Activity Centre conducts regular outreach to seniors aged 60 and above, who live in nearby clusters of 2-room rental flats. Engagement is vital to prevent social isolation and ensure their well-being.

…the elderly who are poor, isolated, sick, and bedridden…

Mr. Wong*, in his 60’s was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year. His wife, who is also ill, is his only care-giver at home. Doctors and nurses from Agape Methodist Hospice (Homecare) (AMH) – a community outreach of Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) – visit him to provide medical care, manage his pain and to give comfort to his wife.

….families in need, suffering distress,

financial difficulties and relationship problems…

Madam Soh* is a widow working part time as a hawker assistant, earning about $500 a month. With two school-going children, it is a real struggle for her to provide for her family. Her home is a sparsely furnished three room flat and their meals are often plain noodles and fried eggs. Gloria*, a Methodist befriender on MWS’ Walk With The Poor programme has been visiting Madam Soh for the past two years, presenting her with a cheque for $100 and engaging in conversations with her, journeying with her through ups and downs.

Robert* was eight years old when he attended D’Joy Student Care Centre, an outreach of Methodist Welfare Services (MWS). One day, while eating porridge he threw a tantrum that lasted for three hours. He did not like the porridge, but unlike other children of his age, he could only vent his frustrations this way. As he has Asperger’s syndrome, he could not express his feelings appropriately. Our teachers at D’Joy Student Care Centre take care of many children like Robert who need extra care and specialist attention.

…underprivileged children and youth-at-risk…
