On February 29th, 2008, Prime

Ministers Stephen Harper and

Milan Topolanek were meeting in

Toronto at the St. Wenceslas

Church. Tom was

catering the event

and Kristina just

pictures taken with

the Prime Ministers.

They caught each

other’s eye early on

in the evening and,

after some harmless

flirting, exchanged

phone numbers .

Tom gave Kristina a

box of delicious pastries and won

her heart over.

A day later, Kristina went to The

Prague to ‘get some dumplings’

and see Tom again. Unfortunately,

both were seeing other people at

the time and it took a few months

before they saw each other again.

In early June, Kristina had a photo-

shoot nearby and stopped in at the

restaurant only to find out that she

and Tom were both going to Europe

on the same day!

Unfortunately, they

did not get to meet

up while they were

there. However, two

days after they got

back, they met up at

Czech and Slovak

J u n e 2 1 s t -

Midsummer Night.

Along with a large

b o n f i r e a n d a

spectacular full moon, love was in

the air. She and Tom spent the

whole night getting to know each

other. This was their first night as a

couple and although Kristina

moved to Ottawa two weeks later,

they made it through the long-

distance relationship. Six months

later, Kristina relocated back to

Toronto, and moved in with Tom. 9

The Proposal

Tom chose the perfect time and day

to propose - the one day Kristina

would not have expected him to do

so. It was a complete surprise.

Monday, June 21st, 2010, the day

after the Miss Czech

and Slovak Canada

Pageant where she won

as First Vice Miss, all

her thoughts were still

on the excitement of

the day before. It was a l s o

their two-year anniversary, so when

Tom came into the room with wine

and a present, Kristina didn’t think

anything so life-changing would be

coming her way. The present was a

white wedding garter, which was

Tom’s way of expressing just how

serious he was about proposing soon,

‘but he couldn’t afford the ring yet’.

Kristina laughed it off, put the garter

aside, and when she looked back,

Tom dropped to one knee holding a

small box, inside of which was a ring.

Kristina was so shocked that she

couldn’t believe it was happening

until Tom actually

spoke the words: “Will

y o u m a r r y m e ? ” .

Kristina responded with

an immediate “Yes!”,

followed by a sudden

emotional burst of

laughing and crying. The couple

happily shared the exciting news with

their families the next day.

That whole week was spent

celebrating. Tuesday, they went for a

nice dinner together. Wednesday and

Thursday they met up with friends,

and on Friday, Tom took Kristina to

see a ballet performance of Onegin. 9

Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in

looking outward together in the same direction.

Future Plans

The future looks bright for Tom and

Kristina. After the wedding, they plan on

moving to British Columbia as soon as

they can. They plan on settling on

Vancouver Island, somewhere north of

Victoria, where they can build their

dream house, complete with a Food

Studio for Tom and a Dance Studio for

Kristina. They look forward to having

children in the next year or two, so you

can look forward to seeing those little

faces soon enough - no need to pressure

this couple. Although it will be difficult

to leave family and friends in Toronto,

Tom and Kristina believe that the West

Coast will be best for the kind of life they

want to lead and raise their children in.

All are welcome to visit them in their

new home, once they find it. View this as

just another reason to go for a vacation

in Beautiful British Columbia.

Tom and Kristina will continue to keep

in touch with family and friends, but if

you ever need to contact them, you can

always email them at:

[email protected]

The Crest

The vines that surround the crest

form a heart shape, which is symbolic

of their joint love for nature.

The banner’s Latin quote, ‘Per aspera ad astra’ means ‘Through hardships to the Stars’. It is to remind Tom & Tyna that life might be difficult at times, but as long as they have each other they will reach the stars and realize their dreams.

The bunny and the kitty cat have a

particularly special meaning. Some

of you might know that the root of

Kristina’s last name, Kott, means

‘tomcat’ in Old Slavic. The bunny

on the other hand might have

some of you confused, since Tom’s

last name, Král, means ‘king’. Here

is the fairytale of ‘The Rabbit

King’. One day Tom the King came

to the castle of a noble family,

having been invited for dinner. The

mother of the Princess was a very

clever magician. She had mastered

the art of ridicule. Unaware, The

King came to the dinner party.

Within seconds, the Princess’

mother added an endearing

E v e r y K i n g h a s a c r e s t t h a t

symbolically describes the family’s

strength, achievements, hopes and

dreams. Tom & Tyna made one based

on the symbolism of their joint families.

Page 11: final wedding mag

diminutive to the King’s name,

turning him from Král (king) into

Králíček (little king).

Unfortunately, the same word also

means “little rabbit”. Since Czechs

eat rabbits, the palace immediately

put knives to the poor Rabbit King’s

throat. However, the good Princess

saw how handsome the Rabbit King

was, and so she saved him from his

fate. With one true love’s kiss, the

spell was broken. The Rabbit King

turned back into his original form,

saving him from the fiery oven. And

this is why Tom has become known

as ‘bunny’ and therefore the tasty

animal graces the couple’s crest.

The End 9

The crown signifies Tom’s last name, Kral, which means ‘king’ in Czech (also one of the reasons for the medievally-inspired theme).

The mountains symbolize two things: originally, Tyna’s family has a coat of arms that depicts the White Mountain in the Czech Republic. It also symbolizes Tom & Tyna’s move to the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia.

The scales on the top of the crest, and

the arrow holding the scales up,

symbolize Tom & Tyna’s astrological

signs, Libra and Sagittarius.
