Background FARA Sub-Saharan Challenge
Program conceived to address persistent failure of research, extension & development approaches to overcome problem of low productivity and profitability to deliver improved livelihoods
FARA launched a Validation study in Lake Kivu region and findings pointed to:
Low productivity and widespread land degradation,
Weak policy & Institutional environment, and
Weak markets environment.

Bubaare IP Multipurpose Coop LtD • Important cereal grown both as a
food and cash crop;• Sorghum is traditionally processed into
a non-alcoholic drink beverage (Busheera) by farmers and small scale processors;
• Busheera is popular drink found in most kiosks in Urban centers
• However, it has had limited success in urban centers because of doubts in quality, hygiene, packaging and limited shelf life.
• The opportunity for niche market presented challenge of a standardized process, improved shelf-life, better packaging and branding have to be overcome to appeal to a wider market.
Forum for Agricultural Research in AfricaForum for Agricultural Research in Africa
Busheera processing Research
• Traditional processing of Busheera has been handed down from generation to generation;
• Makerere University conducted research to understand the science behind traditional processing of Busheera;
• Research conducted to improve the process, preserve and package Busheera in order to increase its shelf life (Muyanja, 2000).

IAR4D in Bubaare Sorghum Value-IAR4D in Bubaare Sorghum Value-ChainChain
• Formation of IP (Farmers, Local govt, Private Sector, Research Institutions, NGOs)
• Problem identification– Declining soil fertility– Reduced size of farmholds– Decreased productivity– Poor and variable quality of produce– Lack of value addition– Limited market outlets
• Value addition and market identified as drivers and entry point– Bushera processing technology combined with branding (Mamera trade
mark)– Private company (HUNTEX Industries LtD) to offer a ready market for the
sorghum– Private company trained in the technology and allowed to use the Mamera
Brand.
Forum for Agricultural Research in AfricaForum for Agricultural Research in Africa
Product Innovation: The Mamera brand of Busheera
• The Mamera brand developed based on the description of the Busheera – Participatory approach in developing
the brand– Taking into consideration the quality of
the product– Taking advantage of the Rukiga
language and terminology
• Mamera registered with the URSB and ownership vested in the people of the region

- About 220 households supply milk/day to the MCC between 2250-2300 liters ( 60 of them supply 5 liters/day while 10 others supply 50 liters/day, the remaining supplying in between) - Milk producers get 140 RwF/liter instead of 100RwF/liter paid by middlemen.

Success stories: Mudende IP
Innocent with his first grade cow from which he now has 3 more cows. 2 are producing milk which he is delivering to the IP collection centre.
Equity village bank is housed by Mudende IP within their collection and cooling centre. This brings the bank close to the farmers in the area and Mudende IP earns a commission from the bank for the services they provide. This also cements the relationship between the IP and the bank making it easier for the IP and/or its members to access credit if need be.

ChallengesChallenges
• Limited participation of identified key partners-private sector;
• Limited capacity in IAR4D;• Difficulties in accessing quality inputs, credit and
extension information;• Limited access to value addition technologies;• Dependency syndrome;• Low or non-existent high end technological
entrepreneurs to take advantage of opportunities.

Lessons learnt- IP formation is a process
Forum for Agricultural Research in AfricaForum for Agricultural Research in Africa
Lessons Learnt, …Lessons Learnt, …
• IPs should harvest low hanging fruits;• IPs with stronger leadership are likely to be more
active• Each IP takes its own identity
• Government support is very crucial• Capacity building is necessary especially at the
initial stages on:– group formation and conflict management; participatory
monitoring and evaluation; later on savings and credit skills as well as business plans
Forum for Agricultural Research in AfricaForum for Agricultural Research in Africa
Lessons Learnt, …Lessons Learnt, …IAR4D approach through IPs does the following:
– Empowers communities to negotiate and/or demand services, participation, ownership and sustainable change
– IPs maintain relevant, effective and efficient partnerships
– Enhances synergies between institutions within activities for effective delivery of targets
– For individual researchers-there is enormous learning and sharing
– Collective action by IPs at community level increases bargaining power, access to higher prices, credit, information, inputs that motivate smallholder farmers to increase crop productivity
