Foreword

It is very vital to understand the importance of Total Quality Management in an

organization. In implementing it the effort should be streamed from the top

management down to the junior employees. If the stakeholders resist change,

everything will be useless. If the organization fails to understand its significance, the

harder it is for the company to adopt this system.

The improvement of the eight elements of TQM will help in achieving long-term

success. That¶s why it is very important that members of the organization undergo

training that targets the eight elements of TQM to every individual.

With the success of the nurtured knowledge and skills that training wish to

develop, the organization can easily adopt Total Quality Management with less hassle

and more opportunities for improvement and growth.

Introduction

Total Quality Management is a management approach that originated in the

1950s and has steadily become more popular since the early 1980s. Total Quality is a

description of the culture, attitude and organization of a company that strives to provide

customers with products and services that satisfy their needs. The culture requires

quality in all aspects of the company¶s operations, with processes being done right the

first time and defects and waste eradicated from operations. TQM has been coined to

describe a philosophy that makes quality the driving force behind leadership, design,

planning, and improvement initiatives. For this, TQM requires the help of those eight key

elements. These elements can be divided into four groups according to their function.

The groups are:

I. Foundation ± It includes: Ethics, Integrity and Trust.

II. Building Bricks ± It includes: Training, Teamwork and Leadership.

III. Binding Mortar ± It includes: Communication.

IV. Roof ± It includes: Recognition

These eight elements are the key in ensuring the success of TQM in an

organization and that the supervisor is a huge part in developing these elements in the

work place. Without these elements, the business entities cannot be successful TQM

implementers. It is very clear from the above discussion that TQM without involving

integrity, ethics and trust would be a great remiss, in fact it would be incomplete.

Training is the key by which the organization creates a TQM environment. Leadership

and teamwork go hand in hand. Lack of communication between departments,

supervisors and employees create a burden on the whole TQM process. Last but not

the least, recognition should be given to people who contributed to the overall

completed task. Hence, lead by example, train employees to provide a quality product,

create an environment where there is no fear to share knowledge, and give credit where

credit is due is the motto of a successful TQM organization.

Time Frame

The module has been designed to provide six hours of continuous session.

Further assignments would be a part of the training. The same may be adopted by the

training institutes/facilitators or may be modified keeping in view the requirements of

individual training sessions. However, to maintain the quality of training, all the areas

must be covered. The time duration for dealing with the topics may remain the same or

show a variability of 20% depending on the expertise of the trainers and the

requirements of the trainees. This training pattern has been made taking into

consideration the busy schedules of the practitioners, who may not be able to devote

too much of their time and their regular work schedules. However, the organizing bodies

can adapt the same module with increase in time limit or number of contact sessions for

conducting their training programs depending on their resources and their participants.

Facilitators/ Trainers

A maximum of eight experts for all the sessions. This include 4 TQM facilitator, 4

Analyst/Specialist in Quality Assurance. Depending on local requirements &

infrastructure the number of experts may be increased.

Infrastructural Requirement

The proposed venues must have adequate infrastructure and facilities for

training. The basic requirements for training would be:

1. Facility for seating, presentation, group discussion ± the seating should

preferably be round table instead of class room seating to encourage participant

interactions

2. LCD projector, computer, audio-visual display, display board and black/white

boards specific requirements for individual sessions, if any, are given along with

the details of each session.

group work to be conducted in groups of 2-4 participants. The trainers would compile a

set of best-conducted assignments and give a copy to all participants at the end of
