Creating a Documentary:

• Pre-Production: I learnt a lot about how to prepare for interviews

and the amount of work which goes into organising and achieving a successful interview.

• Organisation and achieving a meaning behind the documentary’s creation. We had to ask ourselves the intentions behind our documentary. What was it’s meaning? What we wanted our audience to feel after watching our documentary? Would it be a positive or a negative stance on the tattooing industry?

Location:

• Location is crucial to a successful documentary, it needs to be an asset to the subject behind the documentary and to compliment it’s style.

• Camden was therefore a perfect choice as it is known for it’s diverse and non judgemental style.

• Not just general location but interviewing location is further crucial, which is why we were so pleased to have the opportunity to film within an actual tattooing studio.

Influences:

• I have gained a real interest in the making behind documentaries and the individuals credited for their work exposing topics over the years.

• Morgan Spurlock, Louis Theroux, Michael Moore, Mark Dolan, Nick Broomfield are just a few individuals who have been crucially influential to our work and technique when creating our documentary.

Added Details:

• Just to get a viewer interested in your documentary, a lot of work must go into the first 30 seconds of the film.

• This is something we realised when creating our documentary as it was crucial to capture viewers attention at the very beginning, using facts/figures, speeding up clips, adjusting the colours and effects, cross cutting images and shots.

Advertisement:

• Advertising and promoting a documentary is crucial to it’s success.

• Magazines are swarming with ads and critic reviews which are promoting and essentially making viewers aware of a documentaries release.

• Television is also another essential way to advertise documentaries, especially when using specific times when they know their target audience will be watching during an advert.

• Bill Boards and other forms of posters are ever so important when promoting the release of a new documentary to wide audiences.
