and infrastructure are of excellent quality.

Programmes for International Students at WIT 2008

Ireland is a small island republic off the coast of North West Europe. It lies

about 100km from its nearest neighbour, the United Kingdom across the

Irish Sea. It has been a member of the European Union since 1973 and plays

a very active part in all the activities of the Council and the Commission. The

population of Ireland (north and south) is around 4 million. In the past many

Irish people emigrated to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

and this means there are strong social and cultural bonds between Ireland

and these countries. Its main working language is English. Its educational

system is well respected and leads to qualifications which are recognised and

valued worldwide. Higher education has played an important role in the

economic success of the nation.

Types of course available in WITThe courses on offer at WIT range from the pre-entry Bridging course to

undergraduate courses at Higher Certificate and Bachelors level and to

postgraduate courses at Masters and Doctoral levels. Some courses are

designed to run from entry to completion as a single programme; these

are referred to as ab initio courses. Other courses may be used to upgrade

existing qualifications; these are referred to as add on courses.

BRIDGING/FOUNDATION PROGRAMME

The WIT Bridging Foundation programme is designedto help international students improve and practiceEnglish language skills in an academic setting. It alsohelps students adapt to the new learning and teachingstyles they will encounter in Ireland. The courseincludes advanced academic English and alsointroductory courses in some of the subjects from thestudents chosen academic area. Modules includeEnglish for academic purposes, communications, studyand IT skills, mathematics, critical thinking, andEuropean Union society and culture.

All students on the programme obtain two valuablequalifications which are internationally recognised.

ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) - therespected industry standard in the use of computers.

IELTS - the internationally accepted measure of

language ability

POSTGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES

WIT offers a number of taught postgraduateprogrammes in a number of disciplines. Allprogrammes are 1 year in duration, and manyencompass dissertation work. Higher level degrees byresearch are open to students who have completedundergraduate or postgraduate studies at WIT or inanother third level institute in Ireland.

How to Apply for Entry

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES (Direct Entry)You should be at least 17 years of age in January of the year ofentry. You must have a secondary/high school diploma, withgood grades in English and Mathematics and at least 4 othersubjects, with average marks of over 60%. Some courses havespecial entry requirements, e.g. high mathematics grades, whichyou should check under the course details on the Institute’swebsite (www.wit.ie). If English is not your first language youshould present evidence of competence (see later section fordetails).

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES (Advanced Entry)If you wish to seek exemptions for completed courses of studyoverseas, you should satisfy the above requirements and• You must provide details of the college/university you attended

and a certified copy of all academic transcripts which detail the subjects you studied and grades awarded

• If you have only completed part of a course of study in another university, WIT will make contact with that college to complete a transfer agreement.

POSTGRADUATE COURSESTo enter a taught masters programme, you should have a goodhonours degree in a related subject. Work experience is essentialfor some programmes. If English is not your first language youshould present evidence of competence.

BRIDGING/FOUNDATION COURSEYou should be at least 17 years of age in January of the year of

entry. You must have a secondary/high school diploma, with

good grades in English and Mathematics and at least 4 other

subjects, on average +50%. If English is not your first language

you should present evidence of competence.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCESince all of our courses are conducted through themedium of English, it is essential to have high levelcomprehension and writing skills. If English is not yourfirst language you will be required to demonstratethat you have this competence to undertake studythrough English by presenting evidence ofachievement in IELTS, TOEFL or the Cambridge test.

DEADLINESThe closing date for September entry is the 31st May. Thisapplies to most undergraduate courses, taught mastersprogrammes and the bridging course which commences inAutumn. Late applications may be processed if places arestill available.

The closing date for January entry to the Bridging/Foundation programme is the 31st October.

Late applications may be considered subject to theavailability of places and visa restrictions.

Follow the correct application procedure

Entry to all courses at WIT is competitive andstudents will be selected strictly on the basis ofmerit. Having the entry qualifications does notentitle you automatically to a place. WIT reservesthe right to select the most highly qualifiedapplicants for the places available.

If you are a direct applicant to WIT and wish toaccept an offer of a place, you must complete andreturn the notification of acceptance by a specifieddate. You will then be asked to pay your tuition feein full. You will require a WIT receipt for fees paidplus your original letter of offer in order to apply fora study visa.

VISA REQUIREMENTSIt is the responsibility of applicants to check the visarequirements for study in Ireland. The Departmentof Justice, Equality and Law Reform is responsiblefor determining Irish immigration policy.
