Burr and Burton

Academy’s

mission is to

educate its

students

intellectually

and morally

for a life of

responsibility,

integrity,

and service.

Vermont’s BeautyFounded in 1829, Burr and Burton Academy is located in Manchester,

Vermont, a small but thriving town with a population of approximately

4,000. It is highly regarded as a resort area because of its great physical

beauty and proximity to two world-class ski areas, Bromley and

Stratton Mountain. Manchester also offers many cultural opportunities,

including the Southern Vermont Arts Center, the Manchester Music

Festival, the Dorset Theater Festival and the Weston Playhouse.

The school and its location are perfect for students who want

a superior academic education in a beautiful rural setting. Manchester

is a safe community where students can engage in a variety of cultural

and outdoor activities.

Burr and Burton Academy is comprised of eight buildings on twenty-nine acres. The main academic building, known as Seminary Building, was completed in 1832. The Riley Center for the Arts is home to the performing arts including drama, dance and music classes. The Smith Center for Science and Communications, completed in 1998, includes mathematics classrooms, science laboratories, the library and a communications center with cameras and computers for film production as well as Vermont Public Radio’s southern base. The E.H. Henry Physical Education Center includes a gymnasium, classrooms, locker rooms, and a fitness center. The Rowland Center, completed in 2005, has a spacious and light-filled cafeteria on the main floor, with the Foreign Language classrooms above and the Arts Department below with three fine arts studios and a ceramics studio.

Burr and Burton is an independent school with an average of 675 students in grades 9-12. Test scores and a strong college placement record rank it at the very top of all Vermont high schools. Fifty percent of the senior class enrolls in at least one Advanced Placement course. The school annually ranks at or near the top in statewide assessment test scores.

After students are accepted, the International Student Program Director Andrea Thulin works with her department to place them in either one of the dormitories close to the campus or with a local host family. Department members meet regularly with each of the students, attend to their personal and academic needs, and help them to plan activities for the weekends. While being sensitive to their adjustment, the department members are clear with the students that they expect each of them to work hard and to take full advantage of the numerous opportunities that come

with being a Burr and Burton student. The director is the first point of contact for parents and consultants.

International students generally follow the usual course of study and take eight courses during the year. An English course or a course in United States history is required. The English as a Second Language program at Burr and Burton provides English language learners with instruction and support to develop the high level of fluency required for academic success at Burr and Burton and beyond. In addition to helping students master English

International students generally arrive 4-5 days (but no more than 7) before the start of the school year in August to give them a chance to get to know the school and the Manchester community before the first day of classes. Students should arrive at Albany [New York] Inter-national Airport (ALB), which is a 1.5 hour drive from Manchester. The school provides transportation to and from Albany airport at arrival and departure and for the holiday break in December.

During the first week, the director and the top administrators of the school make every effort to see that the international students settle in well in their new homes and classes.

In addition to academic classes, each international student is expected to participate in an afternoon activity. Burr and Burton has a competitive athletic program with varsity and junior varsity teams. There are also many opportunities for students to participate in non-athletic activities, including music and drama presentations, and numerous club activities. All after-school activities are directed by a faculty member.

skills, the program provides assistance with class work for other subjects, with TOEFL preparation, and the college application process for those who plan to continue their studies in the US. International students are required to take an English proficiency test as part of their Burr and Burton application and are placed according to test results.

in recent years, Burr and

Burton has welcomed students

from China, Taiwan, South

Korea, Japan, Thailand, Russia,

Germany, Austria, Spain, italy,

Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia,

and Brazil. The small size of

the school allows us to give a

great deal of personal attention

to our international students.

We work closely with them on

their studies and on their daily

adjustments and experiences.

International students who are here for multiple years live with a small number of other international students in one of three comfortable dormitory houses. A Burr and Burton faculty member and spouse live with the students.

The dormitory houses are traditional New England family homes, located within walking distance of the campus. They have large common areas and are comfortably furnished, with bed linens and towels provided. All of the dormitories have laundry facilities and wireless Internet connection. The students share a bedroom. Homemade meals are eaten with their dormitory parents. As a small community they offer each other support as they adjust to living far away from family and friends and have many opportunities to practice their English.

International students who are enrolled for one semester or

one year are placed with local families who are interested in and committed to sharing their lives with students from abroad. The families are interviewed and selected by school officials.

Living with a family is a very good way for our international students to become immersed in the language and the culture of America. It also gives them a very personal relationship with one family in a warm and caring situation. Students

Living Abroadwho live with host families have their own bedrooms and share meals with the family.

Whether living in dormitories or with host families, international students learn the subtleties of the English language in an informal setting. This helps them with their studies and prepares them extremely well for living and learning at an American university.

BURR AND BURTON ACADEMY CAMPUS

On the lower level of the Smith Center for Science and Communications is the Jonathan Levin Center for Media Arts & Sciences. Courses in this department include digital film making, which gives students the opportunity to work with sophisticated cameras and editing stations, and the exploration of a variety of communications technologies.

Facility includes:• an 1,800-square-foot technology

research area with 40 computer stations. This room may be divided in half by a flexible wall and is equipped with two overhead computer monitors and wide screens.

• The Vermont Country Store Newsroom brings together journalism, high-end video production and graphic arts to produce complex documentaries in a real-world framework. The newsroom is equipped with state-of-the-art Macintosh graphics workstations.

• A fully equipped broadcast studio for Vermont Public Radio.

The Smith Center for Science and Communications is supported by an endowment from Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Smith, ensuring that Burr and Burton is well positioned to implement the inevitable changes in technology that will occur in the future.

Science & Technology

The arts are an integral part of every student’s education at Burr and Burton. Students are required to take a full credit course in one of the arts disciplines in order to graduate. The arts are also integrated into humanities classes with special visiting artist performances and exhibits and through interdisciplinary projects. The Arts Department provides opportunities for cultural literacy in the visual arts. The Performing Arts Department provides instruction in dance, music, and drama, as well as numerous opportunities for showcasing student talent in full-scale productions.

The Arts AthleticsBurr and Burton recognizes the important part athletics plays in a student’s education. All students are encouraged to participate and every effort is made to accommodate as many as is practically possible

on any given team. Athletes are encouraged to excel and to win, but the principle of good sportsmanship is considered of equal importance. Varsity sports include soccer, football, cross-

country, field hockey, basketball, ice hockey, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, dance, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, softball, golf, and track and field. There are also junior varsity teams for most sports.

ADmIssIons REquIREmEntsAs this program is intentionally small, admission is very competitive. Burr and Burton seeks students who are highly motivated to live and learn in the United States. International students come for a semester or a year to perfect their English and experience the American culture. Students who plan to go on to college in the US. most often come for multiple years.

All students must present academic records that provide clear evidence that they are capable of being successful in a competitive college-bound curriculum and are ready to live independently from their families and country. We look for students who have demonstrated a clear desire to live with and learn about other people and who are ready to share their customs and culture with people from other countries.

Once the application is carefully reviewed and the student is accepted, Burr and Burton will send you a notification of acceptance and a contract.

In November of each school year, our international students travel with the International Program staff to Washington DC where they learn about American government. Students and chaperones take a field trip to New York City in the spring and to other historical and cultural centers in the northeast throughout the school year. These trips add an important dimension to their understanding of American culture. There are also scheduled events every other weekend. In the winter interested students go skiing at excellent nearby ski areas, Bromley and Stratton.
