• Teachers receive front line exposure on what Jobs are needed

• Teachers receive workforce experience and effective Teacher preparedness

• Teachers learn what the GAP is between the classroom and what the real world requires

• Teachers can be a job resource for the community

• Teachers can adjust curriculum and make it more relevant

• Businesses develop a more reliant work force pool with better trained entry level employees for minimal cost.

Benefits From Externships

Page 9: Teacher Externship Planning

• Teacher Externships often take place in the summer months and can last any amount of time.

• Some companies pay a stipend, but not required. Transportation is up to teacher. Meals, give-a-ways and gift cards can be given in place

• Both Parties meet prior and set guidelines for both parties and make sure they are met

• Identify an employee who will serve as a mentor/supervisor

• Guide externs not only in carrying out specific projects but also in understanding underlying goals and principles, such as total quality management, and continuous improvement.

Key Consideration

Page 10: Teacher Externship Planning

• We don’t have any Corporate Contacts- Put key business partners on your local Academy Board that have influence.

• We don’t have staff or time- This is just like a student job shadowing, only with teachers. Use same template.

• We have strict union rules- Then have the teacher spend the day with a GM or Supervisor, shadowing their typical day.

• We can’t afford it-Stipend is not mandatory. Offer Meals, give-a-ways or gift cards. The benefit off-sets the cost.

• Take baby steps and start with two or three businesses at a time. It will gain momentum and grow with time.
