Innovation-Decision Process

Knowledge is when one becomes aware of the existence of an innovation and understands how it works (Rogers, 2003).

Persuasion is when one forms a good or bad opinion towards the innovation (Rogers, 2003).

Decision is when one makes a choice to adopt or not to adopt the innovation (Rogers, 2003).

• Implementation is when one puts an innovation to use (Rogers, 2003).

• Confirmation occurs when one seeks validation about the innovation decision and may reverse the decision if negative messages are received about the innovation (Rogers, 2003).

Knowledge

Mobile learning is the no longer the wave of the future. It is the “now” innovation for learning. The ©Apple iPad and iPhone, netbooks, other smart phones, ereaders, and electronic tablets are all mobile devices that are capable of “on the go” learning.

These devices can store and retrieve information.

Convenience of choosing asynchronous and synchronous communication using WIFI

Knowledge concl…

Access email and send email Check online class portal and participate

in online discussions Capture and share real time videos,

audio, and pictures Read online material and books Create and view documents and

presentations Collaborate through text, voice, and even

social networking sites

Persuasion

Researched based evidence supports motivation for learning by neo-millennium students

Faculty understands the benefits of the technology, but skeptical about student abuse of the technology

Faculty questions the use of cell phones as learning tools due to the no cell phone policy at school

Faculty would feel comfortable if cell phones were not a part of the mobile learning equation, and other mobile technologies took precedent

Page 6: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Persuasion concl…

Students excited about the possibilities of collaboration and experiential learning opportunities

Administration excited about becoming the first high school in the state to implement mobile learning as a part of the curriculum

Administration contemplating how to redirect the no cell phone rule and yet preserve the possibility of mobile learning using the smart phone

Page 7: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Decision

Faculty goes to training on pedagogy for mobile learning using the face to face and blended learning protocol

Faculty attends workshop on classroom management strategies for the mobile learning environment

Senior students watch video on integrated learning using mobile technologies

Administration polls faculty and senior students for feedback on the possible successes of mobile learning based on training, workshops, and video conferences attended

Page 8: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Decision concl…

Administration communicated poll results to Superintendent

Superintendent announces decision to adopt at board meeting

Board approves adoption and creates a budget to pilot the program using business and physics classes with juniors and seniors for the upcoming semester

Page 9: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Implementation

The high school creates section of junior and senior mixture in physics and personal finance to pilot the mobile learning program

Teachers redesign district curriculum objectives for each area to include learning targets using the mobile technology as the learning tool

Participating students are assigned a smart phone (Android) and iPad for the semester.

Page 10: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Implementation concl…

Students are responsible for the insurance protection before devices are issued

iPad used for data entry/retrieval, word processing, email, collaboration, Internet use and presentation creation

Smart phone used for multimedia capture (audio, video, and pictures) and collaboration

Page 11: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Confirmation

Survey conducted by administration for teachers and students involved in the pilot program

Progress monitored by administration and presented to the board

Projects assessed, communicated, and displayed for other faculty and students to observe

Page 12: Mobile learning storyboard week5

Confirmation concl…

Teachers and administration develop ongoing data to present to the board for further consideration and permanent adoption

Administration ask for 3 mobile learning labs for the entire high school of 850 students to be shared by teachers by booking through the online resource center

Administration asks for pilot teachers to be able to keep and use their mobile learning tools for future classes
