Which Genre?

• I chose R&B/Pop

• One of my favorite genres

• I have a fair understanding of the genre and how the genre is structured

• Considered as a mainstream genre, popular amongst teenagers and young adults

• Easily earn profit/attract people to read magazine since it is considered as mainstream

Main Focus in terms of representations

• We will be focusing on the representation of females that are represented within music videos and images through analysis.

• Females are either seen as passive or active. (being looked at, or looking at someone/taking action towards something)

What can we see..?

• From the blog post and also music video by 50cent, we can see that females are indeed seen as passive. They are objectified and are sexualized by wearing revealing outfits

• We can also see that Mulvey’s Male Gaze theory can also be applied

• Females looking seductive, posing sexually at the camera

What are people’s views on Pop music?

Females are still seen as a bit passive, male figure is still dominate breaks female character's heart

More of a gender quality genre that is represented

We can see that some representations of females show that woman are seen as passive/objectified.

• When female character kisses the male antagonist , he give the male protagonist a “look” of saying that “she belongs to me” objectified

• Male antagonist slaps female character’s buttocks sexual object where male releasessexual desire

• They have control over their own matters and lives without needing a dominate male character to fund their needs and wants

• The lyrics focuses on females being independent and not needing to rely on men. “I pay all my rent” , “all the food and clothes..”shows they can live well enough without men

• Chorus- “ I don’t need a man” shows that woman don’t need males to do anything can live as happy as they are

• Females are empowered beings, are able to survive and live happily without the help of men

• The representation of female have evolved

• Movements of woman rights presented, influenced pop culturemaking people more accepted of females being empowered and strong

• “#HEFORSHE” campaign has gone virual after being promoted by film star- Emma Watson

• Has raised awareness of gender equality
