A Digipak is limited edition packaging for an album, single etc.
Typically made from cardboard or another kind of soft exterior material with an internal plastic holder for discs.
Extras to normal album/single cover
Although a normal album or single would only have one disc a digipak can have as many as the band want to put in; there could even be extra pockets inside with another CD inside just to add that little bit of customisation compared to the basic.
The style of the digipak can just open like a book, or it can have three parts where the left side can open as well as the right side with the CD in the centre of the packaging.
Pros of the Digipak
Pros: There is much more room for artistic
design as the surface area of the cover is larger.
Digipacks can be more environmentally friendly than jewel cases because they can be made of recycled paper.
Digipacks don't crack like jewel cases do. Can provide fans with exclusive footage
plus live tour footage.
Cons of the Digipak
Cons: More expensive than traditional liner notes
and jewel cases. Can eventually rip and the paper will
separate making ruining the whole digipak. the teeth that hold the CD in place crack
and fall out easily, and once they have cracked there is nothing to hold the CD in.
Not as much protection as the exterior is made of paper.
