Digipak Idea

Page 4: Digipak Presentation

My first idea consisted of a range of colours - I wanted this to represent the creativity of the band. However, I felt the pastels colours chosen were to feminine and wouldn’t appeal to my target audience. I also feel the front cover background conflicts with the multi coloured curves on the other panels.

As you can see I created this on Photoshop free hand, this meant the edges appear messy and unsophisticated.

To improve this I decided to physically make the curves, this enabled me to get an accurate form as I desired.

I then went onto scanning the shape into Photoshop to edit the colour, I also slighted blurred the wave to give it a subtle appearance and to blend in with the digipak.

I have kept the theme of bright, bold colour as I feel this is an important aspect of the band; this is also evident in our audience research. I also took some photos of the play dough characters in positions which made them fit in with aspects of the digipak E.g. top right panel appears as if the play dough character has written the tracklist.

Typography… I began with the idea of writing the track listing as I felt this would represent a more personal feel to Tonics fans – as if the band are writing to them. It also presents how they are laid back and do not have the desire for perfection. However, it was quite difficult to see the handwriting on the digipak because of the scale in which I had created it.

I progressed onto making the handwriting on a larger scale with a bolder appearance but feel I may need to develop on this idea. The typography used for the ‘Win your own band member’ was from da font but I do not feel satisfied with it as I feel it targets a younger audience.

Changing the logo…My first logo design consisted of a guitarist within the ‘O’, I really liked the effect the silhouette gave but when conducting a survey about the logo to my target audience the majority of feedback wanted more colour as there felt it was slightly dull.

I went onto to experiment with a range of colours but didn’t feel this improved the design. I also added coloured lines in the background which added movement and could represent the energy of the band. However when looking at it I felt having one man in the logo made Tonic appear as a solo artist and not a band.

Then I decided to go back to the simple black and white deign but this time use all the instruments which feature in the music video. Each instrument represents a band member. I feel this is successful because each letter has something within it, making it seem less dull. It also shows how Tonic are more focuses on their appearance and not their image which fits in with the Indie genre conventions.

At the moment I am satisfied with the front panel because I feel the logo and background work well together, I also like the one containing the instruments but need to add a keyboard and remove a guitar, I also want to develop the typography and need to photograph two more band members. I may also consider adding images of the tiny props used throughout the music video.
