Dear Editor

“Princess Highway Duplication Winchelsea to Waurn Ponds.”

Everybody talks about the lane closure between the Rail Overpass to Murrengurk Rd east bound and the smaller lane closure west bound opposite Carawatha.

But can someone please explain the ongoing lane closure and speed restrictions from Murrengurk Rd West bound to the rail bridge and then the speed change and lane closure all the way into Winchelsea?

Editors Note:

I wrote to Tony Hedley, Project Director at Vic Roads on Wednesday, asking the following-

Firstly, concerning the Colac bound lanes and the section either side of the railway bridge. This is currently down to one lane. Is this needing only remediation of the road line markings (i.e. removal of turning arrows and double white lines etc.) in order for it to be opened to 2-lane traffic?

Secondly, a small section on the Geelong bound side, on the east side of the railway bridge, is down to one lane.

Is this section only in need of removal of loose stones before it could be opened to 2-lane traffic?

Intersection lights. I’m still waiting for definite dates for the switching on of these lights (as asked for in my email of a few weeks ago). With the accidents that have occurred at some of these intersections (albeit in daylight), with these wet, dark winter nights, the commissioning of these lights is urgent. Is there someone at Powercor that I could contact to obtain dates please?

I asked for a reply before our deadline, but we have received nothing.

The Lorne Arts Festival is on again The Lorne Business & Tourism Association is delighted to host the Lorne Arts Festival again and bring some 65 artists into Lorne for a fantastic weekend of entertainment. The event not only provides our community with an incredible multi-arts and cultural experience of world class standards, it also brings tourism into Lorne at a time of year when businesses are quieter.

With over 4,000 people expected to visit Lorne’s spectacular coastline, this year’s festival will host some of Australia’s best cabaret, circus, theatre, comedy, visual art and music events, as well as free outdoor street performance on the foreshore and Mountjoy Parade for kids and families.

The aim of the Festival is to present high quality performances in unique locations. We want to ignite passion in the local community, out of town visitors and artists alike enabling everyone to share in a vibrant and unique cultural and creative experience.

We are again excited to be partnering with Circus Oz and will be erecting the Circus Oz Foyer Tent as the main venue for the Festival. The 350 seater tent will again be constructed on the Mantra Lorne lawn on Mountjoy Parade and will be in position from Friday 21 August – Tuesday 1 September.

TENT OPERATION TIMES:

· Friday 28th August (10am-midnight)

The weed explosion is just about to begin, This is not a terrorist plot but still requires us to go to war. For people on small blocks the Barwon River Care Group has the ideal weapon to combat these invasive ......... (word deleted). We have an electric spray unit that will fit on your ute or trailer and do terminal damage to these .......... (word deleted again).

Perhaps we need to be serious now. Yes the Barwon River Care Group has a spray unit that they loan out to help you keep your weeds under control. It is very light and has a capacity of 100 litres. You drop it in your ute or trailer, connect it to your battery, add spray, water and dye in correct ratios and away you go.

Most of the weeds that confront us 5 acre

block people respond to 24D or Roundup. You do not require a spray licence to use either of these. 24D is good for broadleaf weeds such as marshmellow, thistles and capeweed. It will also kill any clover that you have growing in your pasture. Roundup will kill just about any thing. Read the spray container label for any withholding period.

Newcomers to Winchelsea might not be familiar with cape tulip. If so, you will soon become experienced. Best treatment for cape tulip on small areas is using a Roundup wand with Roundup on a 1:1 ratio with water.

Our spray unit is available free of cost to River Care members. This provision is necessary for insurance purposes. Not a River Care member? Come along to the

Annual meeting this Wednesday 22nd, 7:30PM at the Uniting Church hall and join up. Membership per year is $15 at this stage.

Contact Mick O’Mara, 52672295 or 0427 672295 to arrange loan of spray unit.

Pictured above: The spray unit will easily fit on the back of a ute or trailer.

Jokes Of The WeekProvided by one of our members.

A diamond in the rough “Im getting a divorce,” said Jack to his mate Bill. “The wife hasn’t spoken with me for six months”.

Bill thought for a mement and then replied. “Just make sure you know what you’re doing, Jack. Wives like that are hard to find”.

I am your Father

Two classmates were chatting in their lunch break. “I know how to get money real quick” says one, “How”?

“Go to your dad and say, “I know the truth” and he’ll give you the money”.

So the young boy went home and said “Dad, I know the truth” and his dad gave him ten dollars and told him not to tell anyone “the truth”.

He then went to his mother and said, “Mom I know the truth”.

“Please don’t tell your dad” she said and gave him twenty dollars.

Content with thirty dollars, he went outside to go to the arcade and saw the milkman. “I know the truth” he shouted out.

The milkman replied “well come and hug your real father then”............

Recipe Of The WeekOrange Cornmeal Pudding

4 oranges

3 3/4 cups milk

1/2 cup cornmeal

3 eggs

1/2 cup castor sugar

Pinch of ground ginger

1/2 cup butter

For the orange sauce

2 Tablespoons Sugar

3/4 cup Sour Cream

1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

finely grated rind of 1/2 orange

1. Preheat the oven to 180c. Finely grate the rind and squeeze the juice from 2 of the oranges. Segment the remaining 2 oranges and remove the membranes.

2. Bring the milk to the boil and sprinkle over the cornmeal and simmer for 12 minutes, stirring. Remove from the heat and cool.

3. Beat the eggs with the sugar, add the grated orange rind and juice, ginger and cooked cornmeal, and mix well.

4. Grease a 23cm cake tin with half of the butter and arrange the orange segments attractively over the base, reserving a few for the middle.

5. Carefully spoon some of the mixture over the orange segments, taking care not to spoil the design. Arrange the remaining orange segments over, then spoon the remaining mixture on top. Dot with the remaining butter and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, until golden brown and cooked through.

6. Meanwhile, make the orange sauce. Mix together the sauce ingredients and chill well.

7. Invert the cooked pudding on to a serving dish and serve warm with the orange sauce. Serves 6.

In our previous article we discussed the basic anatomy of joints and their important role in the body. This week we continue our conversation on the topic of joints by investigating a common ailment that many people suffer from: Osteo-Arthritis. Osteoarthritis is also commonly referred to as Degenerative Joint Disease and manifests as loss of the lubricating synovial fluid, followed by wearing down of the cartilage, and finally erosion of the bone itself from dry friction. Sometimes, the entire shape of the joint can be distorted and bony growths called ‘osteophytes’ can develop along the edges of the joint. Clinical symptoms can include but are not limited to, joint sounds of ‘popping or cracking’, known as ‘crepitis’, painful swelling of the joint, pain and limitation of movement, muscular tension and pain, along with other secondary complications throughout the body due to the altered biomechanics or neurological complications resulting from the degenerative changes.

Whilst it is recognized that there is no known cure for Osteo-Arthritis, Eastern systems of health care such as Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine, along with Osteopathic Medicine advocate there is still much that complementary and conservative intervention can contribute to relieve the potentially painful symptoms that accompany Osteoarthritis. Taking a pill, or a bunch of them, and just ‘putting up with it’ does not need to be the only option for you.

What follows is some advice on different approaches to coping and managing osteoarthritis. For more detailed information, or to make an appointment to receive some treatment or discuss the management of your arthritis please give us a call on 0428177964 or 52672948

Managing Osteoarthritis at Home: Osteoarthritis often progresses slowly, with periods when there’s little or no change. If you have mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis, it is quite possible to control your symptoms with paracetamol and self management regimes which may include the following:

Self Massage & Heat Therapy: Creams, salves and medicated gels can relieve mild pain when just a few joints are involved -- like in your hand or knees. Some common active ingredients in topical creams used to ease the pain of Arthritis include: capsaicin (found naturally in hot peppers), camphor, eucalyptus oil, menthol, and salicylates. Here at the Moksha Project we are producing our own home made organic massage oil blends using traditional Ayurevdic and Western Herbs and a production process that has been used for thousands of years. The initial blends we have produced have been specifically constructed to benefit those people suffering from arthritis. We have a limited stock so call up quick to try a bottle!

The benefits of heat therapy, either by application of a hot water bottle, wheat bag, hot shower or bath (with Epson salts of course) may help to ease the pain and discomfort associated with the joint in question. For particularly ‘niggly’ episodes, it is also possible to buy heat or pain patches that can be applied like sticky plaster directly to the site. These may be effective at providing some degree of pain relief for up to 8 hours. In the event that a joint is acutely inflamed, common sense would tell us that Icing rather than heat may be a more appropriate self – intervention. At times, it might even be appropriate to alternate application of ice to heat and back again in order to promote circulation and induce more rapid healing. For further advice on this please speak with your Osteopath.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These drugs relieve

pain by blocking chemicals that cause inflammation. They are reasonably safe drugs -- but, because of potential side effects like stomach irritation and gastrointestinal bleeding, it’s best to take low doses for only brief periods and seek medical advice from your GP before commencing.

Tumeric: Tumeric is an amazing golden orange spice often used in Indian cookery but known the world over for its amazing anti-inflammatory properties. It is a fantastic safe natural alternative to NSAIDS. There are a number of ways to take turmeric. You can buy it fresh and incorporate it into your cooking, you can take it in tablet or capsule form, or you can take it directly as a spice blend in you food and also as a drink. Tumeric has many applications beyond just its benefits in Arthritis. If you are interested to learn more about turmeric Dr Google will keep you busy for hours on articles preaching the amazing benefits of this wonder spice or alternatively give Haidee a call on 0428177964 to speak further.

Glucosamine-chondroitin supplements: These compounds are natural substances found in joint fluid. They are thought to trigger cartilage production and reduce inflammation. The latest studies show potential in slowing the progression of knee osteoarthritis and relieving moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis pain when used for longer than 3 months.

Osteopathic Managemet of Arthritis: Osteopathic techniques such as gentle stretching, joint range of motion exercises and a variety of massage techniques may improve muscle flexibility, joint mobility and reduce pain levels associated with arthritis.

Church News News from St John’sWe are all looking forward to next Saturday the 25th of July when we gather over at St Joseph’s Meredith to celebrate our Annual Healing Mass and Lunch.

Father Aurelio Fragapane will be our celebrant, assisted by Father Herman, along with the music group who come with Father Aurelio, many of whom are Monash university students. The day will commence at 10am with Holy Hour, followed by Mass at 11am, with lunch at 12 app. Then we all gather over in the hall for a delicious lunch, with all of the church centres bringing food along to be served. Soup, roasts, vegies, salads and the delicious desserts, along with a sherry and refreshments are all served for everyone to enjoy. We believe the Healing Mass brings us many blessings, as well as bringing us all together to enjoy the food, and the company of our fellow parishioners. We all go home feeling what a wonderful activity to have in our parish.

Our children in grade 6 will be preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation later this year, with Julie Johnson preparing them for this important occasion.

Until next time, God Bless Marg Bushell

The treatment prescribed will depend on several factors, including the severity of pain, the ‘stage’ or ‘degree’ of degenerative change in the joint, and how much the condition affects your everyday activities. Osteopaths may send you for Xray’s to confirm the diagnosis and investigate further the stage of the disease. Your practitioner will then outline a treatment plan and strategy for managing and improving your situation and will prescribe a series of at home exercises to do, along with dietary and lifestyle adjustments to maximize your quality of life and ability to best manage this condition.

If the joint is in need of replacement, or surgical intervention, your Osteopath is trained to also provide the post-operative rehabilitation necessary so that you can recover and return to your usual activities in the most effective way possible.

In the next issue, we will investigate ways in which Ayurveda & Chinese Medicine can contribute to managing Osteo-arthritis. We will introduce some of the concepts and philosophies behind the eastern approaches to understanding this disease. The ancient health care systems of Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine offer some amazing insights and interesting alternatives for us when it comes to health maintenance and treatment of arthritis. Applying some of these therapies which are based on treatment protocols that have lasted for thousands of years may well provide an opportunity to experience a much improved state of being. So stay tuned for the next issue! And until then, add some Tumeric to your cooking regime, enjoy a self massage or even better visit us at the Moksha Project for some Massage and / or Osteopathic treatment, and learn some simple stretches to help out all those joints in need!

Traffic AlertRoadworks on Pioneer Road and South Valley Road, Waurn PondsVicRoads advises of changed traffic conditions from next week, at the intersection of Pioneer Road and the Princes Highway in Waurn Ponds, as part of the Pioneer Road Duplication Project.

Works will be undertaken over a 20 week period, and will be complete by the end of the year, weather dependant.

Works will include:

Construction of two right turn lanes from Pioneer Road onto Colac Road (Geelong bound)

Construction of two through lanes from Pioneer Road onto South Valley Road

Construction of a dedicated right turn lane into the South Valley Baptist Church on South Valley Road

Installation of dedicated bike lanes on all approaches to the intersection

Improvements to business access for the Apco service station and Aldi

Asphalt strengthening and resurfacing at the intersection

All entrances and exits to nearby businesses will be maintained during works and traffic controllers will be on site intermittently to assist pedestrians and motorists.

Traffic delays are expected during construction. VicRoads is working closely with contractors, businesses and community groups to minimise disruption.

The Pioneer Road Duplication is being conducted in three sections, with the first section of VicRoads works already complete outside the Leisurelink complex and Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre.

All works on Pioneer Road are expected to be complete by mid 2016.

VicRoads urges drivers to think safety this winterVicRoads Regional Director, Mark Koliba is urging motorists to take extra care on the roads this winter.

“Severe cold and wet weather can create poor conditions on our roads and we are reminding motorists to be aware of wet, foggy, windy or icy conditions, to drive carefully and to be patient,” Mr Koliba said.

Mr Koliba also said that there was an increased chance of crashes happening in winter and that wet weather should be a prompt for all drivers to slow down on the roads.

“We forget sometimes that speed signs refer to the maximum speed allowed; that we need to slow down in wet weather and leave a greater distance between our vehicle and the one in front.

“Unfortunately, many drivers often overlook these simple additional safety precautions.

“We all need to be more alert for other road users who may be difficult to see, such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians; turning on your low beam headlights makes you more visible to other road users and will prompt other drivers to turn theirs on too.

“We need to be aware that traffic is much slower during wet and windy weather, which is a good thing; people need to make sure they drive to the conditions.

“VicRoads reminds motorists that their vehicle must be roadworthy at all times; tyres, windscreen wipers and brake lights should be checked on a regular basis.

“Road safety is everybody’s responsibility”, said Mr Koliba.

VicRoads advises motorists to plan their journey and to monitor VicTraffic for road condition updates. If road users see a road hazard they should call 13 11 70 and VicRoads will attend.

Surf Coast Shire Council will soon seek community views to test ratepayers’ willingness to invest in an aquatic and health centre based in Torquay.A local aquatic centre would contribute to health and wellbeing and would save travel time and costs for some users. However aquatic centres are a major investment. A 25 metre indoor pool with water play facilities, gym and health facilities has been found to be the most financially viable option for our shire. Such a centre would cost $29m to build and $1m a year to run.

Council’s total annual capital works budget for the 2015-16 financial year is $18.3 million so a $29m aquatic centre would affect Council budgets for years to come.

The Victorian State Government will introduce rate capping and this will effect all Council’s financial positions significantly.

If rate capping resulted in a 2% point cut to rate rises. Council’s revenue would be reduced by $105 million over 15 years.

Given the scale of investment proposed it is vital that Council has a thorough understanding of community views shire wide so it can make a decision that will stand the test of time.

We will be running a series of community forums as well as a program of market research including telephone surveys to capture a representative sample of community views throughout the shire.

We knew it would be a tough week this week facing Bannockburn at home after we managed only one win when we hosted them in Round 3. It was a similar story this time round with B Grade being our only winners, however it was very pleasing to see that the margins this time round were much improved.

A Grade Bannockburn 47 def Winchelsea 42

It’s official, we have hit our mid-season slump. We are failing to do our individual jobs and work as a team to finish off. With Karlee DeBono a late withdrawal, we filled her position adequately but when it came down to the crunch inaccurate goaling cost us the win. We only had two good runs which they responded to and we couldn’t get the lead back. Bannockburn called a strategic time just as we were building momentum in the last and had got the margin back to 1 with the ball in our possession. We missed the shot and watched the game slip through our fingers. A disappointing result and we all understand how this can effect finals with only four games to go.

Best Players: Tayla Hardiman, Madeline Huggins and Janelle Birch

B Grade Winchelsea 42 def Bannockburn 34

After a shaky start we remembered why we were there and put our foot down. We adjusted to the umpiring very well from the second quarter onwards and started to adjust our leads and delivery in attack. Our defenders didn’t let us down and used good footwork to overcome the whistle happy umpires. Belinda Czerniawski did an excellent job back in goal shooter playing one of her best games this year. The service from our mid court was strong and with full court pressure we broke the game open in the third and were able to cruise home for a comfortable 8 goal win. A much more solid performance to lead us into the hard road home to finals.

Best Players: Belinda Czerniawski, Bronwyn Walker and Sharna Arceri

C Grade Bannockburn 31 def Winchelsea 23

No win this week but we were very pleased with our improvement on our previous encounter where we suffered a 20 goal loss. Amanda Partridge and Holly McFarlane combined nicely in goals offering many different options in the ring. Danielle Kuchenmeister and Amanda Carroll made strong mid court leads and reoffering for the ball down the court. Our defence was tight but we made too many easy mistakes later in the game when we got tired.

Best Players: Alisha Adams, Amanda Carroll and Beth Connors-Southall

D GradeBannockburn 28 def Winchelsea 23

Facing top spot Bannockburn we needed the win today to go back in to the top 5 but we just missed out. We held it well with Bannockburn for most of the game but their ability to step up when counted showed the quality team they are. All players worked hard and did what was asked of them but we were beaten by a better team on the day. Ann Morgan was fantastic in GA with her movement in the ring. Josie McDonald, Halleshia Kirby and Tilly Campana were strong in Defence. We will continue to fight for a finals spot.

Best Players: Ann Morgan, Halleisha Kirby and Jackie Steere

17 & Under Bannockburn 33 def Winchelsea 21

After our first win last week we came out this week with much more confidence and really played like a team. Lilly Conners-Southall positioned and shot well in goals. She was well assisted by Caitlin Burgess who tried out a new position in wing attack this week and worked hard to make it her own. Connie Royal was once again a strength in both her defence and her drive through the court. Not a win this week but a real credit to the teams improvement to play in the manner they

did and make sure that Bannockburn had to work hard for their win.

Best Players: Lilly Conners-Southall, Connie Royal and Caitlin Burgess

15 & Under Bannockburn 46 def Winchelsea 21

Our 15 & Under team are sitting comfortably in 3rd place on the ladder but to really make their mark they wanted to shake up undefeated top spot Bannockburn. We started off with a vengeance and had a 1 goal lead at quarter time. Unfortunately Bannockburn gained their composure and really stepped up after this make it difficult for us to score and showing both accuracy and precision for the remaining 3 quarters. Both Issy Loone and Makayla Nelson hassled well in defence while Ebony Berg played a leading role in attack. It looks like we have a bit more work to do but we are certainly bridging the gap!

Best Players: Issy Loone, Makayla Nelson and Ebony Berg

13 & Under Bannockburn 44 def Winchelsea 5

We knew coming into this week’s match it was going to be a difficult task with Bannockburn sitting on top with a massive percentage. We started strong and were only down by 5 at quarter time. Maddie Kattwinkel and Amy Hobbs did a fabulous job in defence getting their hands to a lot of balls and pulling in rebounds. However, we struggled to bring the ball down the court cleanly and Bannockburn got the ball back. We have improved so much since our last meeting and the girls really made Bannockburn work hard. Be proud of your efforts girls, both in this game and in the season so far. Let’s keep up the good work and finish the season strong!

Incentives: Amy Hobbs and Maddie Kattwinkel for remaining strong and competitive for the whole game.

It was always going to be tough playing Bannockburn at home and that certainly was the case. The Blues kept at it all day but in an under manned side found it impossible to go with a full strength, much improved Banno side. Again the young Blues side featured Colts players who had already played in their own league earlier in the day. Enough said.

While only scoring a point in the 3rd, the boys kept their opposition from scoring as well to maintain the lead at ¾ time. The team continued to shut down Bannockburn & won a convincing victory. Surf Coast Shire Council is hosting an information session for land owners and farmers on a new jump forward in rabbit control.

The Federal Government has been working on a new calicivirus, one of the most humane methods available to help control the rabbit population, with hopes this new version will be available for use early next year. Surf Coast Shire is being considered as a potential virus release site.

Surf Coast Shire Council and Corangamite Coastal Management Authority are jointly hosting a free information session on the new rabbit calicivirus on Friday 7 August 2015 at Barwon Park Mansion, commencing at 8:45am. Keynote speaker at the event will be leading rabbit control expert Dr Tarnya Cox.

Dr Cox will be talking about the new K5 virus strain scientists are hoping to have available in autumn next year. Joining Dr

Cox will be well-respected rabbit expert John Matthews, who will be presenting on conventional rabbit control methods.

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Heather Wellington said rabbit control is an ongoing issue for Council, land managers and land owners.

“Rabbit control is a big issue for farmers and land owners across our shire, so it’s fantastic to be able to have a big conversation around how we can keep control of these pests and what options for control are available,” Winchelsea Ward Councillor Heather Wellington said.

“Living on a farm myself, I understand the frustration of having to deal with rabbits, and it’s great to have rabbit control experts to speak to about what control options are available to us now and in the future,” Winchelsea Ward Councillor Carol McGregor said.

“I see rabbit management as something that requires a coordinated effort by neighbours to make a real impact on local rabbit populations and encourage landholders to use this latest information as an opportunity to make a real impact on rabbit numbers,” Cr McGregor said

RSVP for the free information session before Monday 27 July to Helen Chandler on 5261 0516 or [email protected]
