Benson VFW Post 2503 December 2016
www.VFWPost2503.org
From the Commander
I would first like to say Thank You to all
the Veterans, staff, and families that
came out and showed support to the
VFW. It was a pleasure to see new faces
and re-connect with the old ones on
YOUR special day. Veteran’s Day was a
huge success and again thank you to all
those that participated. If you got the
chance to notice, our State Commander
Doug Whitaker was also in attendance
that day. Thanks Mr. Whitaker for mak-
ing a stop at our post.
It continues to be an honor to be a re-
tired Veteran and serve as your Com-
mander.
The post is moving forward with many
other activities coming up. Please share
these events with fellow members and
non-members. It’s always great to
meet new people.
Thank you again, and Happy Holidays to
you and your family.
Commander Cox
From the Auxiliary
President
Happy Holidays!
Speaking on behalf of the VFW Post 2503 Aux-
iliary, I would like to wish all our families and
friends the very best holiday season, remem-
bering that distance teaches us to appreciate
the days that we are able to spend together
and distance teaches us the definition of pa-
tience.
It is a reminder that every moment together is
special and every second together should be
cherished. I truly appreciate every one of you.
Thank you from the President and most im-
portantly the Cox Family.

The Voice of Democracy is an audio-essay contest
is open to students in 9th – 12th grade and this year’s theme is “My Responsibility to Ameri-ca.” Each student submitted a typed essay and a 3 to 5 minute recording of him/her reading the es-say. Every year, over 40,000 high school students nationwide compete for a share of more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, State, and National levels. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., Feb-ruary 25 – March 1, 2017, to tour the city, be hon-ored by the VFW and its VFW Auxiliary, and to receive a portion of the $153,000 in national awards, in which the top scholarship is $30,000.
The Patriot’s Pen youth essay-writing contest is open to students in 6th – 8th grade. Last year more than 120,000 students participated in this con-test. The national winners will receive at least $500. The first-place national award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian. Each student submitted a typed 300 to 400-word essay speaking to this year’s theme, “The America I Be-lieve in.” Like Voice of Democracy winners, prizes are awarded at the Post, District, and State lev-els. Special thanks to this year’s judges who volun-teered their time to support this important pro-gram: Danny Lang, Sharon Cooper, Lee Terry, Kathy Raabe, Leigh Freeman and John Cleveland.
