PRESIDENT’S RAMBLE Our May Meeting was, once again, well attended. Whilst
this is always good to see, it would be even better to see
more members at our other events. Barry 'told it like it is'
at the meeting, being very disappointed about the numbers
at recent events. I know you've heard it all before, but I
implore all members to make an effort to get out and enjoy
your cars (old or new) and the company of fellow
members.
We had a good attendance, however, at the Frank De
Britt Run, actually having more cars than required! This
was because the numbers from the Retirement Village were
slightly down on previous years, and two or three cars had
more than one passenger. I had a good chin-wag with my
passenger (in my newly-acquired Toyota Cressida), John
Graham, who seemed to be very knowledgeable on the
various topics we covered. The run out through Frampton
was delightful. Thanks to all the chauffers, and to Lynn,
Joan and assistants for an afternoon tea of the usual high
standard.
The lunch at the newly renovated Sir George Hotel at
Jugiong was very pleasant on another lovely Autumn day.
Karen and I took the Hurricane, and on arrival saw the
magnificent XK120 of Ken and Dana, and the yellow
Valiant of Denis and Mavis (from Junee). Malcolm and
Linley arrived shortly after in the XJS, so we had a trio of
English two-door cars. If Denis had brought the Morgan,
we would have had a quartet! After moving three times,
we cobbled-together a couple of tables so that we could all
sit together and chat - a very pleasant way to spend a
Sunday afternoon.
Please check the Events Calendar at the back of this
magazine for our upcoming meetings (the July one is in
Harden) and events, and put your choices in your diary. I
am particularly looking forward to the Ariah Park run on
the 17th of June.
Safe and happy motoring to all members . . .
Cheers,
Hugh McMinn

SCROUNGED STUFF
Apologies to Ken & Mary-Anne McKay for writing that
they were previous members in the article about their
1958 Leyland Worldmaster bus. I need to check my
records more carefully in future as they are certainly
financial and of course welcome members of the club.
The Wagga Wagga Veteran & Vintage Motor Club will
host their 50th Annual June Long Weekend Rally this
June. Being the 50th Anniversary, there is bound to be a
huge display at Downside on Sunday 11th June from
midday to 3pm. Entry is by Gold Coin (which goes to
Charity). Generally they have an area for older cars to
park which is near the cars on display.
A very good contingent of Temora Antique Car Club
members attended the Observation run in
Cootamundra in April. It would be great to have a
large contingent of CAMC cars & members attend the
upcoming run to Ariah Park on the 17th June. The
Temora Club is organising morning tea & lunch. This
should be a great run & I believe there are some great
places to visit.
This run was scheduled for last year but was called off
due to the wet weather. Let’s all get behind it this year.

Studebaker Nationals at Remark
The trip to Renmark for Jill and I in the Studebaker Lark convertible started the weekend before Easter because we
were meeting friends, Barry and Merlene Carr, to have four
days sailing on the mighty Murray River in a house boat.
This was a bit of an adventure, and great fun. I would
highly recommend it to anyone.
Studebaker activities were at the Renmark Hotel,
commencing with Meet and Greet dinner on Thursday
night. Friday was Registration and Swap meet, some free
time, then dinner at night followed by an Auction of all
things Studebaker.
Saturday was Concours day. While the “boys” looked,
talked and compared, the “girls” had a Paddle Boat cruise.
Then more lovely food at night with Rock‘N Roll dancing.
Sunday was a change to the usual convoy of vehicles
going to a set venue. As Renmark has many interesting
things to see, we were given a list of places to go to, some
of them at specific times, and off we went. The weather
was great, so with the top down, we visited a Fish Farm,
Winery, Rose Garden with a small Car display, and had a
most enjoyable day out. More food at night and
Presentation of Trophies.
Monday was a farewell breakfast, and many were on their
way home. As we planned not to leave until Tuesday, we
spent Monday doing a little more sight-seeing in the town
and surrounds.
We left Renmark around 8.30 on Tuesday, and arrived in
Narrandera about 4.30, not bad for 600km in a 57 year
old car. We were back in Cootamundra on Wednesday
morning at the end of an excellent time away. The Stude
performed well over the whole trip and averaged 22.3
mpg (12.7 l/100), I’m happy with that.
Alan Thompson.
Club Observation Run – 22 April Great weather and a great time were had by all on our
observation run. Now is that an airplane out in the
paddock on the right?
Well not quite right, it did have a type of propeller, so OK,
you had to use your imagination and it was actually a
windmill.
A few curly questions but the main idea was to have a bit
of fun and that certainly came out in the “Answer Time”
back at the mystery BBQ destination where some people
had a quizzical look on their faces when the answers were
read out
Don't argue with the boss., Ted apparently trying to take on Lynne
over some of the answers to the Observation Run. Brave man!
AND the “Mystery BBQ Destination” was at the great
hosts residence of Graham and Robyn Snape and their large
shed filled with some very nice pieces of motoring eye
candy

Young Car Muster – 30 April A great sunny Autumn day for this year’s Young Car show,
which did attract several CAMC members.
I parked outside the show, but on entry I was directed by
Sue McCarthy to display my car. I was asked for the type of
vehicle & I responded with ‘1985 Suzuki Swift’, only to hear
a chuckle, followed by ‘Oh, you’re serious’.
Luckily I have broad shoulders, but to improve the
presence of my Swift, I parked next to a Mini Moke (this is
one way of giving my car the illusion of greater presence &
luxury).
John Lynne was also speaking shop & taking notes on the
day about a 1973 XJ6 Jaguar for sale. Appears he is in the
market for another car. Vehicles do not get too
comfortable at the Lynne household.
The event attracted about 70 cars. Vehicles of interest
included a 1923 Buick, a 1927 Willys Knight, a few 1960’
Cadillac’s, a V6 Commodore powered FJ. The people’s
choice award went to an EH Holden.

1986 he instigated an annual event of taking folk from the
Retirement Village, Nursing Home & Stroke Patients
Recovery Group for an afternoon drive in our club cars.
This year our club picked up 16 willing passengers at 1.30
p.m. & took them for a scenic drive out around where the
township of Frampton once existed.
Afternoon Tea was enjoyed in the Stephen Ward Room of
Cootamundra Library. (Stephen Ward came from
Frampton.)

The History of the Nissan Motor
Company – Part 1: Prior to WW2 The Nissan Motor Company has links to the DAT
Motorcar Company from the 1920’s .DAT Motors built
trucks in addition to the DAT and Datson passenger cars.
The majority of its vehicles though were trucks, due to an
almost non- existent consumer market for passenger cars at
the time. Commercial operations were placed on hold
during Japan's participation in World War I, and the
company contributed to the war effort.
Through the 1920s, much of DAT’s profitability depended
on government subsidies of their large trucks. In 1930 the
Japanese government declared that drivers' licenses would
not be required for cars with engines up to 500 cc
displacement & they would also attract lower taxes. DAT
produced a car to meet these laws called the "Datson" (i.e.
"Son of DAT") Type 11
The type 11 was a small car with a 495 cc, 10 HP side
valve engine and a three speed transmission & offered in
several body styles. They sold 150 of the Type 11 in 1932.
The Type 11 had the same engine displacement and
external dimensions as an Austin Seven. Information about
the British Austin 7 was widely available within Japan. In
October and November 1929, the chief engineer of Austin
presented a paper in Tokyo called "The British Light Car".
This paper is supposed to have provided detailed
explanations and illustrations of many of the mechanical
components of the Austin Seven. The exact relationship
between the two cars is, however, in dispute.
Some authors say that it was a licensed copy of the Seven
(similar agreement to those being built under licence by
American Bantam in the US & BMW in Germany). Others
say it was an unlicensed copy. There are even reports that
Herbert Austin imported a Datsun car in 1935 in order to
examine it, but decided to not file a complaint. Some
authors have pointed to this as evidence supporting the
hypothesis that the Datsun was not a copy of the Austin.
Other authors suggest that the decision to not press
charges might was because the Datsun designs had begun to
differ from the Austin. There were also plans to export a
large number of the Datsun – Austin 7 lookalikes to
Australia in 1935. It is reported that 24 reached our shores
until political pressure put a stop to it. Perhaps this was the
first example of the Japanese automotive invasion?
Changes in the law for 1933 increased the engine size to
750cc without the need of a licence, so DAT released the
Type 12 in 1933, which was basically the same as the Type
11, but with a larger engine.
In 1933 after Nissan Group took control of DAT Motors
and the last syllable of Datson was changed to "sun",
because "son" also means "loss" in Japanese. At this time
Nissan controlled foundries and auto parts businesses, but
with taking over DAT it entered the automobile
manufacturing industry.
The Datsun Type 13 went into production in April 1934. It
remained much the same as the 12, except for the grill and
flat disc wheels replacing the 8 slot Type 12 wheels.
Importantly though, it was the first one exported from
Japan. It was only small numbers to begin with (a total of
44 vehicles were exported in 1934). These included exports
to South Africa, and to Australia, A total of 880 Datsun 13’s
were produced in 1934 & it continued in production until
March 1935. 1935 also saw the opening of Nissans new
Yokohama plant.
The Datsun Type 14 of 1935 was externally very similar to
the Type 13. The only notable difference was the addition
of a leaping rabbit emblem. Dat apparently also means to
"dash off like a startled rabbit or hare", so Nissan designed
the leaping rabbit radiator mascot. The motor of the Type
14 was a Datsun Type 7 engine, a side valve 4 cylinder
engine with a displacement of 722 cc. Despite being
smaller than the Type 13, it was more powerful, at 15 hp
(11 kW). The engine drove the rear wheels through a three
speed gearbox to give the car a top speed of 80 km/h
(50 mph).
A total of 3,800 Datsun 14’s were produced between
April 1935 and April 1936, of which 53 were exported,
including to Australia.
The Datsun Type 15 of 1936/37 was again mechanically
very similar to the Type 14, but externally it was larger than,
but with less chrome detail. Little changed with the Datsun
Type 16 of 1937/38, other than some slight styling changes,
mainly on the bonnet and changes to the bonnet mascot.
The Type 17 released in 1938 was the last model before
passenger car production was halted due to WWII. Again
the 17 was just a face-lift of the previous model. The most
obvious change was that the grill surround was now the
same colour as the car.
