Welcome to the August Issue

What a fantastic month July was for the residents of Canvey Island and Castle Point. The real community spirit that exists on the Island has really shone through in what must have been the wettest July ever!

We were able to witness a small piece of

history when the Olympic Torch relay passed

through Castle Point. Hundreds of local

residents braved the weather to line the streets

of Hadleigh to welcome the torch and

especially to cheer on Canvey resident Kim

Axford who had the honour of being selected

to carry the torch.

The following weekend saw Kim lead the

Canvey Carnival procession proudly

displaying the torch. The Carnival proved to be

yet another amazing community day with the

weather holding off for most of the day.

You may remember a few months ago we

introduced you to a local boy, Danny Green,

who has been fighting against a brain tumour

in Great Ormond Street hospital. On page 8

this month, we bring you an update on

Danny’s progress and the fundraising efforts

that have been carried out by Canvey Islanders

in order to support Danny and his family. Yet

another example of the community spirit that

continues to thrive on Canvey.

Your Canvey is your local community

magazine and we would love to hear from

anyone who has an interesting story to tell. If

you have a business based in the local area or

serving local residents, Your Canvey offers an

affordable and effective way to advertise. We

have been publishing our quality magazines

for 5 years in July so we are here to stay! We

find that many local residents keep hold of

their magazine and use it as a useful reference

guide to the area. To keep our advertising

costs as low as possible, we deliver to half of

the Island one month and the other half the

next. We deliver all the magazines ourselves

with the help of family so we can give you a

100% guarantee that the magazines are being

delivered! We can also include your own

leaflets with our magazines if you prefer.

You can find our full Media Pack on our

website at www.yourlocalmags.co.uk or for

more information call Angela on 01268

696404. Alternatively, you can e mail

[email protected]

If you have missed a copy of Your Canvey ,

you can find back issues and an archive of past

articles included in the magazine on our

website:

www.yourlocalmags.co.uk

See you next month.

Best Wishes

Mountain Bike Event at Hadleigh Farm

Mountain biking is a fairly new event in the Olympic Games with Cross Country Mountain Biking making it’s debut in 1996 in Atlanta.

The sport starts in California in the 1970s

when tough new bikes built especially for

rough terrain were developed. These bikes had

flatter tyres, fast shift gears, drum brakes and

ground-breaking suspension. These bikes gave

thrill seeking cyclists a much more freedom

and the sport of mountain biking was born.

Repack Downhill Race

The members of the Velo Club Mount

Tamalpais in California generally receive the

credit for establishing mountain biking as a

sport. They invented the Repack Downhill

race, held regularly between 1976 and 1979

just across the famous Golden Gate Bridge

from San Francisco. The races attracted riders

from near and far, and the media soon started

taking an interest. It’s popularity as a sport

soon spread and the first World

Championships were held in 1990, followed

six years later by it’s first Olympic

appearance. This took the form of a cross-

country event for both men and women and

the programme has remained unchanged ever

since.Among the big names in Mountain

Bilking is France’s Julien Absalon, a

two-time gold-medal winner - in

2004 in Athens and in 2008 in

Beijing.

2012

In the London 2012 Olympics, the

competition will take place over the

specially constructed course over

550 acres at Hadleigh Farm on

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th

August. There are 80 contestants all

together - 50 men and 30 women -

who will compete in the Olympic

race that begins with a start loop of

441 m. The course is a total of 4.7

km with 172 m of elevation change.

Competitors are allowed to carry tools in case

they encounter difficulties. The competition

lasts about an hour and 45. All riders start at

the same time and must complete a certain

number of laps.

Mountain Biking Rules

The rules for mountain biking are quite

simple. Riders may not use any part of their

bodies to make contact with their opponents

in hopes of slowing them down. Curiously, if

an offence is committed, the race is not

paused and the offending competitor is

informed after the race has been completed.

The only time a rider is forced off of the

course is if he or she is lapped. In such an

instance their day is over. Mountain biking is

physically gruelling and the course can often

cause damage to the racer's bike. One of the

most common delays is a flat tyre and the

course contains what is known as a Technical

Zone which is similar to a pit-stop in motor

racing. This is where the repairs are made to

the bike. However, no assistance is allowed to

the rider as they are required to make any

repairs without assistance.

Canvey People - Danny Green

Since Danny’s diagnosis of Brain and Spinal Cancer in November last year Danny has had to spend large spells of time in hospital with his parents Chris and Lisa by his side. As a consequence a Charity has been set up in his name to raise money for the specialist Neuro rehabilitation required to get Danny well as he has also got Ataxia and Posteria Fossa Syndrome which is effects a lot of his core balance and co-ordination.

The Canvey Island Firemen in conjunction

with The Danny Green Charity arranged a

community event in July to raise awareness

and funds for Danny as the care he will need

when he comes out of hospital is very

expensive. Danny has had gruelling Chemo

and radiotherapy over months and the latest

Milan Chemo treatment has certainly taken its

toll on Danny, who is still in Great Ormond

Street hospital. He has had several setbacks

with his recovery but is still fighting hard and

the community as a whole is praying for him.

A facebook page has been set up for those

interested in Danny’s progress and those

arranging fund raising events or donations.

If anyone interested please ask to join The

DannyGreen facebook page.

The DannyGreen Charity needed to raise

£5000 to obtain Charitable status and this

has been achieved as a result of all the hard

work from everyone over the last couple of

weeks. Cheri Stokes The Chairperson of

The DannyGreen Charity would like to

personally thank everyone how has worked

tirelessly. This now gives them the

opportunity to contact local companies for

donations and support with their charity

number. If you would like to help in

Danny’s rehabilitation, raise funds or donate

please do not hesitate to contact the Charity

on www.TheDannyGreenfund.org.uk.

Chris is amazed at the level of support offered

and very grateful during this horrible time

that they are not on their own and not only

they have Canvey Island behind them the

message has got all the way to Scotland as the

new spreads of The DannyGreen FB page .

As a consequence Over 20 people in Scotland

have arranged a Tri Event Challenge all in aid

of Danny in August even though none of

them know Danny.

Another event has been arranged for 28th

September where it is hoped that Danny and

his family will be attending to celebrate his

recovery. If you would like to join them at a

Summer Ball on the 28th Sept at Orsett Hall

please make contact via the webpage or

facebook page for details. There will be a 3

course meal, DJ, Auction and Live

Entertainer. There are lots of other events

arranged including a Ladies night on Canvey

on 14th August and Paintballing etc. Again,

please see the webpage for details.

Danny and his family continue to thanks the

community for their continued support.

Committee on December 5 1889

and is vested in the undersigned

as a permanent committee”

It then lists the names Henry

Hayes, William Coleridge,

Abraham Manning and Arthur

Mayhew Clark. This plaque is

currently kept in the Dutch

Cottage Museum, haven Road.

Henry Hayes, who is named on

the plaque, was the Reverend

Henry Hayes who had been

Canvey’s Curate-in-Charge since

1872. He worked tirelessly in

ensuring that his parishioners had access to

the amenities that he believed were essential

to both their spiritual and medical welfare. He

was instrumental in arranging for the supply

of fresh water to the village via the well. Also

during his time, the Island received a new

church and its first school.

The well was officially opened on 5th

December 1889 and a crowd gathered for the

opening ceremony. As there were still only

several hundred people living on the Island at

the time, the well quickly became the focal

point of the village where people would meet

up regularly to discuss the latest news and

events.

The pump was used for the next thirty-three

years before being finally pulled down in

1938. In 1913 the Southend Water Company

became responsible for supplying water to

Canvey Island but it was not until 1922, when

Canvey was finally connected to the mains

water.

You can read more about the work that Rev

Henry Hayes did on the Island at

www.canveyisland.org

Canvey History

The well on the corner of Haven and Long Road was sunk in 1889 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Up until the well was built, the only water supply available to local residents was rainwater collected in water butts or buckets of water bought from one of the local

farmers who had small wells.

The cost of providing the well was largely

met by voluntary public subscription, aided

by a grant from the Corporation of the City

of London. The iron pump was sheltered by

a thatched roof and a painted wooden board

around the eaves said:

“Whosever drinketh of this water that I give

shall never thirst.”

There was also a large horse and cattle

trough placed nearby. A plaque was placed

above the well that read:

“This well provided for the use of the

inhabitants of Canvey Island by public

subscription and a contribution from the

Corporation of the City of London was

opened by the Chairman of the Sanitary

Community News

The 5th Canvey island Air Scout Group had a very busy month last month.

To start with, they had their photograph

taken with local councillors by the seafront

to mark the start of a new project that their

Scout section is involved in. The project

involves a Boat Garden that will be located

on the seafront (near the toilets) and the

Scouts will be painting the boat, planting

flowers and maintaining the garden.

The Cub section then attended the Canvey

Carnival with a float decorated as a

Christmas scene. They won first place in the

Best Float category as well as being the

Overall Winner. This absolutely thrilled the

cubs as they put a lot of effort

into their costumes and the group had a lot

of help from the adults who helped decorate

the float.

Last but not least, to top off a fantastic

month, the 5th Canvey Air Scouts were

chosen by Sainsbury’s as their nominated

Community Fundraiser this year which is

excellent news. The group

will be working very

closely with Sainsbury’s

doing lots of fund raising.

The 5th Canvey Air Scouts

is a very friendly Group

that was founded on the 1st

October 1982. There are 3

sections that are all open to

both girls and boys:

Beaver Scouts 5¾- 8 years

of age, Cubs 7½- 11 years

of age and

Scouts 10½- 14 years of

age.

All sections meet on a

Thursday evening at

Lakeview Hall, Hilton Road which is really

good for communication between the

sections and helps the young people to have

a smooth transition throughout the group.

There is also a strong Young Leader scheme

for those Explorers who wish to undertake

training to become leaders and work with the

younger sections.

As Air Scouts the group has an interest in air

activities which gives young people the

opportunity to experience air related

activities as well as scouting activities. They

achieved RAF recognition in 2008, which is

a great achievement. This does mean,

however, that they expect a high

commitment to the group, including uniform

and disicpline.

If you are interested in joining, drop in on a

Thursday night to speak to one of the Group

Leaders or alternatively fill in a form on our

website at

Canvey Island Football Club

A new season is almost upon us, pre-season fixtures are under way, new season fixtures are out and all following big changes at the club which has seen a change of Manager, Physio and a big turnover in the playing staff. It’s been traumatic but that’s football and we look forward to an exciting season where the futures is bright and the future is YELLOW.

We must start by welcoming a Canvey

Island FC legend back to Park

Lane. That is of course Steve Tilson who

will take the club forward as Manager

assisted by another Canvey FC hero in Craig

(Crowe) Davidson. Tilly will look to bring in

new faces at the club and together with

our remaining squad from last season will

give us a very competitive team to challenge

for the Ryman Premier title.

A new reserve team for this season will be

playing in the Essex Senior Reserve League

managed by the excellent John Branden who

was Assistant Manager at Southend Manor

last season and managed the successful

Essex Under 16s side.

The fixtures for the new season and early FA

Cup and Trophy draws are now out

and some can be seen below.

Off the pitch the Club is helping

support the Castle Point Sports

Club for the Disabled charity

who sadly had its funding cut this

year and needs to make up a

shortfall of approximately £7,500.

It will be the Club’s Official

Charity for this year and we will

do all we can to help raise

much needed funds.

Fixtures for the coming few weeks:
