Are you ready for Christmas? Are you so
organised that you bought everything in the
January sales for gift-giving twelve months
later? If you answered “yes”, then there’s
no need to read on. However, if you’re like
me, Christmas has once again taken you
completely by surprise. I suspect we all go
into denial at the point when the first
Christmas decorations arrive in the shops
around about August!
Normally we’d panic and snatch the first
vaguely suitable gift from the nearest
available shop. But wait! Last minute gifts
are never well thought out, are they? The
adage “it’s the thought that counts” is
actually incredibly important. People would
rather receive a small, carefully chosen gift
than a hastily grabbed box of bath products
that scream “this will do”!
Don’t panic. Most shops will be open on
Christmas Eve, so you can really leave it
until the absolute last minute if you plan a
little first. Make a list of who you need to
buy for and spend time really thinking
about those people. What do they like?
What would they appreciate? Keeping the
recipient in mind and choosing a thoughtful
gift is the only way to succeed at this late
stage.
Some people are just downright
impossible to shop for which is why
you’ve put off buying anything until
now. In this case, present them with a
written promise to take them shopping
for something they really want. For some
people it really is better to get their input
before buying.
Another heartfelt refrain is “what do I get
the person who has everything?” The
answer is… a box to put it all in.
Whether this is an unusual jewellery box,
a useful sewing chest or colourful,
personalised storage containers for children,
you can’t go wrong with an attractive box.
Donate the gift of your time. Offer to
babysit so parents can take a well-deserved
break. Spend a day gardening for someone.
Buy tickets for a concert, cinema, sporting
event or a play and take the family.
Organise a surprise weekend break or
holiday and present the tickets on Christmas
Day.
Bring some nostalgia to Christmas with
family-friendly board games. Introduce
extra food with a gourmet gift hamper. A
beautiful tree ornament will hold memories
every year when it comes out again.
Students will always appreciate money.
Don’t even attempt to work out what the ‘in
-thing’ is as it will surely change next week.
If you’re still stuck, there are always gift
vouchers. Spa-breaks, restaurant vouchers,
experience days, animal adoption and
cookery courses are unusual vouchers to
give.
Last minute Christmas gifts don’t have to
come from the shops. Use your imagination
and take some time to think about what they
would really welcome. Have a happy and
stress-free Christmas!
It’s not too late to find the perfect gift

Next spring, local
resident Teresa Chuter
will be heading off on the
adventure of a lifetime to
make a difference to the
lives of local children.
Teresa lives on Canvey Island and runs a
local business - All Occasions Catering. She
will be trekking the Inca Trail for the Have a
Heart campaign which works to help local
children who are vulnerable, suffer from
illness or are deprived of the childhood that
every child deserves.
Along the Inca Trail, Teresa will be retracing
the footsteps of the Inca people to their
ancient lost city of Machu Picchu. It will be
a tough challenge but as Teresa says “every
step I take will be making a difference to
disadvantaged children living in the local
area.”
To support Teresa in her fundraising, you
can make a donation online at

Age Concern Canvey Island is run entirely by volunteers and has an office based in the Paddocks which is open from 10am to 1.30pm every day.
The staff at the office are available to answer
any questions you may have from

whole range of problems and also have a

For some ten years now, Age Concern have

Long Road, Canvey Island from 12.30pm to
enjoy friendship, a lunch, raffle and bingo.
Outings, holidays, parties, theatre visits and
other functions are frequently organised and
are very well supported. There is also always
a Christmas and Easter party for members.
The Chair-person, Dot Axford, works very
hard organising as many different events as
she can to make member’s lives more
enjoyable despite their age. Some of the
members are over 90 and still going strong!
You are guaranteed a warm welcome so pop
along and join them!More information is

East Neighbourhood Forum had just
over £34,000 in their budget to spend this
year. This amount had accrued from previous
amounts not being fully spent or allocated for
projects.
The councillors from the three wards have
been asking residents at neighbourhood
meetings and on ward walkabouts to come up
with ideas on how they would like to see the
money spent. (NB. Neighbourhood forum
money can only be spent on items within the
wards community and can be spent on
community safety and pride so long as there
are no ongoing and maintenance costs).
We already had several projects agreed that
have been put forward and a power point
presentation to show these will be on the
Agenda at the February meeting.
At the neighbourhood meeting on the 4th
November a suggestion from residents was
put forward. They have asked for the area
near Leigh Beck playground to be made more
welcoming for parents to enjoy with their
children. Picnic benches and seating have
been suggested to us along with trees to help
break up the landscape. We have therefore
allocated £10,000 for these improvements
based upon costings obtained from
Castle Point Council. This allows us 12 trees
with wire protection round truck to be
planted, 4 picnic tables and 4 benches to
be installed, all with concrete base.
Unfortunately costs are higher than
people expect, for example bases cost
£400. Any money that is left over from
this allocation will of course be put back
in the pot for other projects coming
through. Please be aware that you can
send in your ideas to me for projects as I
am the Chairman for this year. Input is
always welcome and all suggestions are
discussed and taken forward wherever
possible each year. Cllr Janice Payne.
Sheltered Accommodation
Work at the sheltered accommodation on
Canvey continues. Sweetbriar Lodge is almost
finished and work has now started on Amelia
Blackwell. CPBC have supplied the paint,
Crown College painted the entrance areas and
have made notice boards and bird tables for
each of the sheltered accommodation homes.
Community Payback teams from Essex
Probation are working hard in the homes
painting communal areas and tidying gardens.
Canvey Island West Neighbourhood has
approved a £1000 grant for garden
improvements and Canvey Island Town
Council awarded a £500 Grant for a 50''
Coloured TV for their communal lounge. If
there are any company's who would like to
help or make a donation towards ongoing
works at our sheltered homes, please contact
me on 07989441139. Cllr.Peter May

There are many people in the history of Canvey Island who have worked to make the Island a better place. One of those was Miss Clara James (above) who, amongst other things, founded
the Canvey Island Women’s Institute.
Clara James was born in 1866 in Kent and
went on to become a passionate campaigner
of Women’s Rights. She joined the
Women’s Trade Union Association in 1889
and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of
deprived young girls working in London.
Miss James was a trained
gymnastics teacher and set up her
first Working Girls Club. The
clubs became very popular and
helped her to gain the trust of the
girls - it was not unknown for her
to have 300 attendees a week over
the six clubs she ran.
She first discovered Canvey
island in 1905 when she visited
for a holiday to help her own ill
health. She believed that Canvey
would provide the perfect
atmosphere for the working girls and
decided to open a holiday rest home for
them.
She finally opened the large wooden house
known as “The Girls’ Bungalow” in 1909
and it provided a holiday home for the sad,
weary girls of London until the start of the
first World War. If they ran out of space
inside the house, Clara would pitch tents in
the garden so that no-one had to miss out on
the opportunity of a holiday where they
could relax in the fresh air, have a good time
and be well fed.
Miss James also threw herself into other
aspects of Canvey life. She founded the
Canvey Labour Party and became a member
of the Canvey Urban District Council. She
also went on to become a JP. She was also
involved for many years with the Girls’ First
Life Brigade and the Nursing Association.
She became a founder member of Canvey
Island’s Women’s Institute and was both the
president and trustee. Her photo still hangs
on the wall in the WI Hall in Lionel Road.
Clara James died in 1954 leaving an adopted
son, Peter.

Canvey Island Youth Project will be on the road throughout this winter with its outreach programme across Castle Point, thanks to local schoolchildren.
A donation of £211 will help with running
costs and supplies over the colder months.
The money was raised at an under-14s disco,
arranged by Pubwatch and supported by Essex
Police and Castle Point Community Safety
Partnership (CSP) to show youngsters that
drink was not necessary for having a fun time.
More than 80 pupils from Cornelius
Verymuyden and Castle View schools
attended the event at CK Bar, Charfleets,
which brought the curtain down on Drinkwise,
the annual alcohol awareness campaign co-
funded by the CSP.
Morrisons, Canvey Island, supported the event
by generously providing soft drinks, juices
and water for the alcohol-free evening and
members of Pubwatch donated the raffle
prices.
Cllr Cliff Brunt, Chairman of the Castle Point
Drug & Alcohol Reference Group who run the
Drinkwise campaign said: “The evening was a
great success and the youngsters had a
wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed
themselves. I am sure that they’ll
have many happy memories of
the event and that when they are
older they’ll look back on it as a
stepping stone in their developing
a sensible attitude to drink and
alcohol.
“Pubwatch, police and CSP are to
be congratulated in coming
together to stage this event.
Thanks are also due to the CK
Bar, Morrisons and the many
members of Pubwatch without
whose support the evening could
never have got off the ground.”
The CIYP bus makes weekly visits to known
nuisance hotspots across Castle Point. It gives
youth workers and the Essex Young People’s
Drug and Alcohol Service a mobile base to
engage with young people.
Corinne Wheeler, CIYP coordinator said:
“The bus enables us to greatly extend our
work by allowing us to get out to trouble spots
and engage with young people directly,
providing information, advice and where
necessary counselling on alcohol and other
issues.”
In addition to the outreach programme, the
charity offers a free and confidential service
for all young people at their drop-in centre in
the St Nicholas Centre, Long Road.
They can advise on things like claiming
benefits, finding somewhere to live, getting a
job, filling out forms, writing letters,
education, and other concerns young people
may have. They give information about drugs
and alcohol and can offer counselling to
young people and their family or friends.

Canvey Island Football Club
would like to wish everyone
involved with the club and all its
supporters a very merry
Christmas and a happy New Year.
The past month’s results have been good with
wins in both the Championship Manager Cup
(Ryman League Cup) and the Essex Senior
Cup along with 2 wins a draw and one defeat
in the league. Due to the lack of league
games our league position has not changed
much and we remain mid table but with
games in hand over most teams.
We now enter a very busy and crucial fixture
period as we lead up to Christmas when we
play several of the top 6 sides followed by
local Derbys with Concord Rangers on 27th
December and Billericay on 3rd January,
both of which will hopefully pull in bumper
crowds as they are both played on Bank
Holiday days with a 3pm kick off. It is worth
pointing out that the Billericay game which
was first scheduled for New Years Day has
been moved back to 3rd January which
will allow everyone to enjoy their New
Year’s Eve celebrations and relax on New
Year’s Day with their families.
On the player front we were delighted that
both Danny Heale and John Easterford
(pictured) agreed contract terms for the rest
of the season and we hope beyond.
Our reserve team remain top of the Capital
League at the time of writing and have
several tough fixtures before Christmas
including Chelmsford, Braintree and
Bishops Stortford. We wish them well.
Entry prices for Capital League games are
much reduced and the football is high
quality so why not pop down for a game
which are always played on a Wednesday
evening for Home games.
Off the pitch we have a number of events
scheduled in December including a
children's Christmas Party on Sunday
12th December, 3.00 a ticket, and a New
Years Eve Party which includes a disco
and a buffet with tickets at £10.00 adults and
£5.00 under 16s with under 12s free. Tickets
for both can be purchased at the football club
on all evenings except Monday. Details can
also be found on our website.
Finally below please find our December
fixtures a full list can be found on our newly
designed website in association with Impact
Media Design at www.canveyislandfc.com.
Sat 4th December - Home - Croydon Athletic
Sat 11th December - Away Sutton Utd
Tues 14th December - Home Lowestoft Town

Mon 27th December - Away - Concord

December 1914 - A Christmas Truce
One of the most remarkable events of the
First World War concerns the Christmas
Truce of 1914, in which the soldiers of the
Western Front laid down their arms on
Christmas Day and met in “No Man’s
Land,” exchanging food and cigarettes as
well as playing football.
The cessation of violence was entirely
unofficial. There had been no prior
discussion and troops acted spontaneously
from goodwill, not orders.
The most famous account of events involves
British and German forces; however, French
and Belgium troops also took part. No-one
really knows what initiated it. There were
some reports that British troops heard their
German counterparts singing Christmas
carols and joined but there were also reports
of German and British soldiers erecting
signs wishing each other a “Merry
Christmas.”
Driven by feelings of goodwill, home-
sickness and combat-weariness some men
crossed the lines with their hands up, and
troops from the opposing side went to meet
them. Commanders either turned a blind-eye
or joined in. Food and supplies were
exchanged and tools and equipment were
borrowed. Games of football were played
and bodies trapped within No Man’s Land
were buried.
7th December 1761 - Marie Tussaud
was born in France
We are all familiar with the waxwork
museums that feature the name “Madame
Tussaud’s” but how many of us know
anything about the woman behind them?
Born Anna Marie Grosholtz, her fascination
with waxworks began as a young child
when her mother was a maid for worked as
a maid for Dr. Philippe Curtius who used
wax to model anatomical figures and drew
huge crowds with the opening of his first
waxwork museum.
He trained the young Marie, who went on to
teach sculpture to the children of King
Louis XVI. The king loved her work so
much that she was invited to live with the
Royal Family at Versailles until the French
Revolution of 1789.
During the revolution, she was arrested
because of her association with the king.
She was freed however due to her
association with Dr Curtius and was then
employed to make death masks from the
heads of those who lost their lives at the
guillotine. Marie would search through piles
of decapitated heads to find the best
examples. On his death, Dr Curtius left his
museums to Marie who had by now married
Francois Tussaud. She opened her first
museum in London 1835 and her self
portrait (below) still stands at the entrance.
She died in 1850.

For this months issue, I thought I would introduce you to the first team squad. The coaches for league matches can pick 18
players -15 on the pitch and 3 replacements.
Cup matches are allowed 6 replacements.
For the uninitiated, there are three front row,
two second row, three back row one scrum-
half, one fly-half, two centres, two wingers
and one fullback making 15 players on the
pitch. Rugby union laws state that in league
or cup rugby you must have a front row
player on the replacements bench as this is
regarded as a specialist position.
The photo shows Canvey’s squad. Front Row:
Richard Dennis, Jason Fardell, Billy Gorringe,
James Saunders, Darren Smith Second Row:
James Breading(capt), Scott Wheeler, Andrew
Hardy, Dyffd Gillespie Back row: Dave
Dennis, Jack Gillingwater, Tommi
Gillingwater, Matt Lay, Brett Smith (vice capt)
Damon Cooper, Lee Thorne, Luke Smith, Tom
Saunders, Morgan Evans, Frankee Leeming,
Tom Dulieu, Charlie Clarke, Steve Hassan, Ben
Chandler, coach Andy Hawes forwards coach
Dick Gibbons.
This has been the players most used this season
the coaches can and do use other players that
are, as we call them, on the fringes of first team
rugby particularly the younger members of the
club who we hope are our future.
