Welcome to the June Issue
By the time you read this, the long weekend and celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will probably all be over. Hopefully we have all enjoyed spending the time with friends, family and neighbours.
The Country’s thoughts are now turning
towards the Summer Olympics. This is the 3rd
time that London has hosted the Olympic
Games and you can read about the past 2 times
in this month’s article on page 6. We are lucky
to be in close proximity to the mountain biking
event at Hadleigh Castle as well as the route of
the Olympic Torch which will pass through
Hadleigh on 6th July. Find out more about this
on page 8.
Canvey Carnival is back this year on Saturday
7th July. The return of the carnival last year
proved to be a great success and raised over
£3000 for local charity, The Indee Rose Trust.
Turn to page 16 to find out more about the
2012 carnival.

The Olympic Games in London
Now that the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations are behind us, the country’s attention is turning towards this year’s Olympic Games. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, followed by the 2012 Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September.
London has hosted the Olympic Games on
two previous occasions - in 1908 and 1948.
The 1908 Olympic Games
The 1908 Summer Olympics were due to be
held in Rome but in 1906, the volcano Mount
Vesuvius erupted near Naples. The Italian
government decided that they needed to spend
their money regenerating the area around the
volcano so they asked for the Olympics to be
relocated.
So, it came to be that the 4th Olympic games
were held at a new 68,000 seat stadium in
Shepherd’s Bush. The Great British weather
was on hand as was to be expected meaning
the games were played out under continually
rainy skies. The games also suffered from a
number of arguments between the British
officials and many of the other countries,
including the United States. 2024 athletes
took part - 44 of whom were women.
Great Britain won the most medals with a
total of 146
The 1948 Olympic Games
In the wake of the devastation of World
War II, London struggled to stage the
1948 Olympics. There was debate over
whether such a spectacle was appropriate
so soon after the war but the world
seemed ready for the diversion. A record
4,000 athletes from 59 countries
participated. Germany and Japan were
not invited, and most Soviet Union
athletes stayed home.
Due to the post war economic climate and
rationing, facilities were below the standards
of earlier games. Wembley Stadium and
other sports facilities had made it through the
conflict relatively unscathed so no new
venues were built and the athletes were
housed in existing accommodation rather than
an Olympic village. A cinder track was laid
inside Wembley Stadium and other venues
were adapted.
The team that won the most medals was the
United States with a total of 84 and they also
won the most gold medals with 38. The host
nation won 23 medals, three of them gold.

The Olympic Torch is Coming to Castle Point
The Olympic Games
On Friday 6th July, the Olympic Torch will travel between Ipswich and Chelmsford passing through Hadleigh on it’s journey.
Fourteen Torchbearers, six of whom are from
Essex, will carry the Olympic Torch through
Hadleigh wearing white and gold uniforms.
One of the torchbearers will be Canvey
Islander Kim Axford who is a fitness
instructor at Waterside farm.
The Torch will arrive in Hadleigh at 1.49pm.
from Leigh-on-Sea and will be carried along
the London Road and the High Street before
turning down Chapel Lane towards the
Olympic Mountain Biking Course at
Hadleigh Farm. At 2.30pm it will be
transported by bicycle around the Hadleigh
Farm Mountain Bike Course, then returning
along Chapel Lane and on to Victoria House
Roundabout where it will turn down Rayleigh
Road. It will then be transported by convoy
from Hadleigh to Basildon.
The Olympic Torch
The Olympic Flame or Torch is a symbol of
the Olympic Games. It originated at the
ancient Olympic Games held at
Olympia, Greece, from the 8th
century BC to the 4th century AD.
A sacred flame burned continually
on the altar of the goddess Hera.
At the same time, heralds were
summoned to travel throughout
Greece to announce the Games.
The Olympic Flame was
reintroduced at the 1928 Olympics
at Amsterdam and the modern
tradition of moving the Olympic
Flame using a torch relay from
Greece to the Olympic venue
began at the Berlin Olympic
Games in 1936.
The Olympic Flame is lit from the sun’s rays
at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a
traditional ceremony among the ruins of the
ancient Olympic Games. After a short relay
around Greece, the Flame will be handed over
to London at a ceremony at Athens. The
Olympic Torch Relay started at Land’s End
on Saturday 19th May 2012 and will then
visit more than 1,000 cities, towns and
villages in the UK. It will arrive in the
Olympic Stadium on Friday 27th July as part
of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
The Mountain Bike Events at Hadleigh
The Mountain Bike events at London 2012
take place at Hadleigh Farm over the
weekend of 11th-12th August, the final two
days of the Olympic Games. The event is held
as a single race around the course, with all the
mountain bike riders starting together. The
winner is the first to cross the finish line and
gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded.
The women’s event will see 30 to 40 riders
complete a distance of 20 to 25 miles on the
Saturday, and 50 to 60 men will complete a
distance of 25 to 30 miles on the Sunday.

2011 saw the return of the much loved Canvey Carnival after an 11 year absence. The event was a great success raising just over £3000 for local charity, The Indee Rose Trust.
This year’s carnival is set to be bigger and
better and will also feature a Fun Day by the
seafront at Labworth Park. The procession is
scheduled to leave Thorney Bay Park at
12noon and travel up Craven Road, along
Long Road, around the one way system and
finally down Furtherwick Road ending at
Labworth Park.
Canvey Festival will be held on the same day
at Labworth Field starting at approximately
12.30pm and ending at 5pm. This will be a
Fun Day for all ages and will feature an
arena where local groups will show
demonstrations and displays. There will also
be a Dog Show into
which local residents can
enter their dogs. A
whole host of other
activities are planned
and it promises to be a
fantastic day.
Children at Canvey Island Junior school have
had the chance to enter a competition to
design the Carnival association’s float for
2012. The winners will crowned King and
Queen of the Carnival and invited as VIPs on
the day.
Do you have a few hours to
spare on the day to help?
We have a great team of volunteers who help
out with road closures and general
marshalling round the carnival. If you could
spare a few hours and would like to help put
this day on the map for Canvey please email

Lunch Club and in the office.
Age Concern has been working on the Island for almost 13 years and is now looking for volunteers to help prepare vegetables in the kitchen on Tuesdays
or Thursdays.
The Age Concern office is open from 10am - 1.30pm and is looking for
volunteers to work one day a week.
Anyone with a few hours a week to spare who is interested in any of the positions should contact the office on 01268 515883 Mon - Fri 10am - 1pm
After closing it’s doors for the final time in August 2011, Furtherwick Park School’s Governing Body wanted the school’s name and it’s community service to continue.
A trust fund was donated to the Rotary Club
of Canvey Island and 5 trustees appointed.
The trustees are James Kellard, Rev. Marion
Walford, Jan Dunford, Tony Belford and
Steve Williams. The aim of the trust is to
continue the good work of Furtherwick Park
School by assisting, supporting, developing
and educating the young people of Canvey
Island. Many local schemes have benefitted
already from the trust including an outside
classroom at Leigh Beck Junior School,
security fencing at Hawkesbury pre-school
and Canvey Island Boys & Girls football
team.
The latest beneficiary of the fund is the
Canvey Island Cricket Club who have used
the sponsoring to fund their first ever Under
11s cricket team. Four of the trustees
attended the team’s first match
in May to hand over the
cheque to club president and
youth coordinator Gary
Snowden. They also all stayed
to watch the newly formed
team play and beat local rivals
Benfleet ‘B.’ The team will be
using the money to help pay
for kit, pitches and training.

Canvey Island Football Club
With us now being in between seasons focus moves to events away from First Team and Academy action.
The major event to take place in the past
month was our annual Youth Tournament
which took place at our Park Lane Ground
on 12th and 13th May. Over 90 teams took
part with the under 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s
playing 7 a side matches and the under 11s,
12's, 13s and 14s playing 5 a side matches.
We had both local teams and those from
outside of the county taking part and, as
the weather was good, very large crowds
of parents and supporters.
Other events are scheduled for June
including a Diamond Jubilee Party
at the club, a quiz night, all major
European Championship matches and
of course our weekly Sunday night bingo
which starts at 6.30pm (doors
open at 6pm.) Please keep an eye on our
website for more information or pop along
to the club which is open every night apart
from Monday and Wednesday (unless a big
European Championship match is played on
these nights). Enjoy the short break before it
starts all over again!
