Welcome to the August issue of Your Canvey Magazine!

I’m putting the finishing touches to this

month’s magazine after returning from a

lovely day at the 20th annual Castle Point

Show. There was plenty to do for all ages -

that’s our daughter Holly above who enjoyed

all the children’s events and activities,

especially the face painting.

This year, the Show was bigger and better

than ever having joined forces with the ever

popular Rubbish Riot Day. Visitors to the

show were able to enjoy demonstrations from

local groups including Judo, marching bands,

dance groups, a football tournament and

classic car show.

We had a stall there together with the Canvey

Community Archive and the Canvey Carnival

Association and we made lots of contacts and

shared lots of stories of people’s memories of

Canvey Island.

If you still haven’t had chance to buy your

copy of our new Canvey History book - Your

Canvey Memories, you can now find it in

Happy Days, Furtherwick Road (on the

corner of Oak Road) or at the reception desk

of the Oysterfleet Hotel. You can also order it

on our website at

www.yourcanveymemories.co.uk

Call us on 01268 696404 and if you live on

the Island, we can often deliver your copy on

the same day!

Enjoy this issue

Best Wishes

Take a trip down Memory Lane with

our new book - Your Canvey

Memories. It is a fascinating account of

Canvey Island’s history through the

eyes of those who lived here including

Eddie Terry who now lives in

Australia. Here are some of Eddie’s

memories that he shares in the book.

“I can fondly remember our daily walks

down to the beach. At the bottom of Maurice

Road by the seafront was Andrew’s Fair, this

was rather a small ramshackle fun fair and

wasn’t really very popular with us boys.

Down at the seafront was the Casino

amusement arcade with rides, machines and

a small lake with boats you could hire out.

The penny machines in the Casino were ripe

for cheating. When you won on the machine

you were supposed to turn the knob twice

and get your penny back but if you turned

the knob very slowly until it was about to

click and then spun the knob very fast, it

clicked past the stop and you could keep

doing it and getting pennies every time.

Also, all of the money used to fall into the

bottom of the machine which had a wooden

door so that the owner could get the money

out but there was a gap at the bottom of the

door with enough room to slide an hacksaw

blade into and slide the pennies

out. We did quite well out of

this, and of course the more you

used the hacksaw the bigger the

gap became at the bottom.

The owner of the Casino was

Mr. Beaumont and he and his

two sons used to walk around

with huge bunches of keys

hanging around their necks that

were used to open the machines

when they broke down. We had

to keep an eye out for them as

they knew what was going on, it

was just a case of catching us!

This all changed when we got the lovely

taste of Charrington’s beer and our hunting

ground became the Monico Pub next door.”

To read more of Eddie Terry’s memories as

well as other first hand accounts of life on

Canvey, including the night of the flood you

can purchase your copy of Your Canvey

Memories by calling 01268 696404.

We always love to hear your stories

and this is a wonderful tale of how a

Canvey resident helped to deliver a

message to an 86 year old lady in New

Zealand from the father she lost in

World War 1.

The story begins in 1914 when the first

World War was only a few hours old. 26

year old Private Thomas Hughes from

Stockton-on-Tees was one of the first people

to be called up to the war and on hearing the

news sent a postcard to his wife and 2 year

old daughter sending explaining where he

was going and sending his love. This

was the last time they heard from him -

or so they thought!

Not only was Private Hughes one of the

first people to go to war, he was also one

of the first to die. His body was never

recovered. On the 9th September 1914,

two days before he died, he wrote a

letter to his wife and put it into a green

ginger beer bottle. He also wrote a letter

to whoever was to find the bottle asking

that they forward the message to his

wife and “earn the blessing of a poor

British soldier on his way to the front.”

He then screwed on a rubber stopper and

tossed the messages in the bottle into the

English Cannel as he left to fight in France.

It was 85 years later that a fisherman from

Canvey Island, Steven Gowan, was trawling

for cod of the Essex coast when he dredged

up the bottle - still in near perfect condition.

“Someone else may have just thrown it back

into the sea or taken it home and done

nothing about it,” says Steven “but I became

determined to deliver the letter. Even though

I assumed that Mrs Hughes must have

passed away, I felt a great personal

responsibility to get the letter to any family

he may have had.”

Mr Gowan began his search by placing an

advert in a newspaper local to where Private

Hughes was from and by amazing co-

incidence, his plea was spotted by a distant

relative of Mrs Hughes. She had emigrated

to New Zealand eight years after her

husband’s death with their daughter Emily.

Mr Gowan was flown out to meet her by a

New Zealand newspaper and personally

delivered the bottle and the message that was

meant for her mother all those years ago.

Emily said it was a great source of joy and

comfort to her.

Private Hughes with his wife and daughter Emily

Steven Gowan personally delivered the message in a bottle to

Private Hughe’s Daughter in New Zealand

Concord Rangers have announced The

Indee Rose Trust as the club’s official

charity for the forthcoming season.

The club have set a minimum fund-raising

target level and are planning a number of

fund-raising events throughout the season

involving all of “The Beachboys” sides from

the first team and Veterans, down to the

club’s vast youth set-up who have recently

gained FA Charter Standard status.

A celebrity event will be held in August,

with Concord chairman Antony Smith

hoping that this one event alone could raise

in excess of £20,000 for the trust.

The Indee Rose Trust was founded in July

2009, and aims to help children and their

families who have been diagnosed with a

brain or spinal tumour. The story behind the

charity is a tragic yet

inspiring one, and

the club are

delighted to be

contributing to a

cause that provides

such in-depth and

much-needed

support to the children and families affected.

The club will be releasing more details about

the upcoming celebrity event in the coming

weeks and are hoping for an impressive

turnout from the local community and the

football fraternity to support such a

worthwhile cause.

For more information on the Indee Rose

Trust please visit www.indeerosetrust.org or

Who would have thought that a book about Canvey Island’s early buses would be so fascinating! Certainly not me but Peter Clark’s self published book contains entertaining and delightful accounts of the shenanigans of the early bus companies including their rivalry with any of the mainland ones that dared to cross the creek.

Journeys to and from Canvey Island

involved travelling over the creek from

South Benfleet by ferry or in later years via

an opening bridge. In days when few

possessed a motor car, the bus service to and

from Benfleet Station used by most islanders

and visitors to the Island was a very

important part of people’s lives.

Prior to 1931, the buses were operated by

numerous individuals. Controls and

agreements often proved impossible to

enforce and so lawlessness, rivalry and many

disputes resulted. Clark describes the

busmen from off the Island - some who

came from as far afield as Kent as

“interlopers from across the creek.” They

would often end up in ditches or bogged

down in the deepest pot-holes thanks to the

local drivers. Also included in the book is an

article from a local newspaper about three

busmen from Canvey. One was deformed in

one leg, another had a glass eye and the third

was subject to fits. They obviously did not

have to pass a medical in those days!

Eventually, the last remaining fifteen

operators on the Island formed a private

company which acquired an amazing

assortment of vehicles. Before long, they

sold their shares to the Bridge family and

Canvey’s buses, with their own

characteristics, continued to be privately

owned until 1951 when sale to the British

Transport Commission resulted in

nationalisation.

Canvey Island’s Early Buses priced at

£4.95 is now available. This 44 page, A5

book published by the author chronicles

events during these early days and is well

illustrated with many early photographs and

references to the early Canvey pioneers. The

author believes that this story will be of

interest to those interested in local history as

well as those interested in transport. The

book is currently available from Castle Point

Transport Museum (1st & 3rd Sundays) and

the Dutch Cottage Museum (Wednesday &

Sunday afternoons) or direct from the author

Last month, athletes from all the Canvey

junior schools met in a District Sports

Event at the Cornelius Vermuyden School.

Pupils competed in both track and field

events with Leigh Beck School winning the

trophy for their school for the second year

running (see photo above.)

There was excellent enthusiasm and team

spirit from all the teams.

Breathe Easy Canvey Island received a

breath of fresh air at their last meeting. Mr

Brian Lindsell, this year’s president of the St

Clements Masonic Lodge, presented them

with a cheque for £510. Mr Lindsell, who

also suffers from breathing difficulties,

decided to donate the proceeds of a raffle

September. In the FA Trophy

we have been drawn at home to

fellow Ryman Premier side

Hendon with the match to be

played on Saturday 22nd

October.

We will shortly be announcing

the name of a major new club

sponsor which may happen

before you read this column, we

also hope to announce further

new sponsors in the near future.

There are numerous ways in

which Companies and in fact

individuals can sponsor or advertise at

Canvey Island FC. If you would like to

know more then contact our Sponsorship and

Press Officer Chris Sutton on 07740 921532.

Off the pitch. our weekly Sunday Bingo

night is now well established staring at 6pm

with cash prizes to be won and the chance to

win big money in our card and key games.

Other events are being planned for the

summer including live music so please keep

an eye on our official website.

On Sunday 4th September Canvey Island FC

will be hosting a charity fun day event

organised by Thames Ambulance in aid

of the fantastic charity McMillan Cancer

Support. This will of course involve a game

of football between a Thames Ambulance

Charity XI with likely opponents Canvey

Fire Brigade. The event will include bouncy

castles, pony rides and a sweet stall.

Finally, our very popular Community Passes

will be available soon and will be distributed

to all schools when they return in early

September. They allow free entry to all

children under the age of 12 and if they

are accompanied that adult will pay a

reduced entry price of just £7.00.

See you at a game down at the lane soon

Finally, after what seems like an

absolute age but is in fact less than 3

months, football has returned to Park

Lane. The players have been back

together training hard since June and

at the time of writing 2 of 9 scheduled

pre season friendlies have been played.

These matches have seen us complete a very

good win away at Heybridge Swifts and a

slightly disappointing home draw with

Wivenhoe Town. However, early friendlies

are for experimenting with formations,

looking at trialists and chopping and

changing line ups so not too much should be

read into them. We do however have some

tough friendly matches to play so as we

approach them the manager will be looking

to slowly get closer to his strongest squad

and line up.

Ryman Premier fixtures are out and can be

6th August 1991

It was today that Tim Berners-Lee released his

text-based Web software to the public creating

the beginnings of the World Wide Web and

general public use of the Internet.

Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in 1955.

He became the primary inventor of the

software program known as the World Wide

Web. In 1989, Berners-Lee and his

colleagues created a communications protocol

called HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

that standardised communication between

computer servers and clients.

7th August 1840

An Act of Parliament was passed today

prohibiting the employment of children under

16 as chimney sweeps. Chimney

sweeping was a job children could do better

than adults and small boys were employed to

climb and scramble up chimneys. Their task

was to brush clean the inside of the flue with

small hand-held brushes.

The chimneys were usually very narrow (in

some cases as small as 30cm) and twisted. The

boys would come down covered in soot, and

with bleeding elbows and knees. Children

often got stuck or froze with terror in the

cramped darkness - in these cases the Master

Chimney Sweeper would simply light the fire

underneath to “encourage” them to get on

with their work. The work was dangerous and

painful. Some boys got stuck and died of

suffocation.

18th August 1868

On this day, a French astronomer spotted an

unknown element, now known as helium, in

the spectrum of the sun during a much-

anticipated total eclipse. As it was first

discovered by studying the Sun, the name

Helium was derived from the Greek word for

sun, helios.

It wasn’t until 1895 that British chemist

William Ramsay proved the existence of

helium on Earth in his studies of a radioactive

ore material from Norway. Helium is a very

small and extremely light gaseous element. It

is odourless and tasteless. Helium is the

second most abundant element in the universe

with only hydrogen occurring more often.
