The New Year Tradition of Wassailing

associated with groups of rowdy young

men who would visit homes in a trick or

treat kind of way and if they weren’t

given food or drink would either curse the

occupants or vandalise the property.

Hence the demand in We wish You A

Merry Christmas to “bring us some figgy

pudding” and “we won’t go until we’ve

got some.”

Orchard Visiting Wassailing

The tradition of Orchard Wassailing is

still carried out in some parts of the

country, particularly in cider producing

parts of the West Country. This involves

singing and drinking to the health of the

trees in order to ensure a good crop in the

coming year. Customs and traditions vary

between regions but the general aim is to

“wake” the tree.

A bowl of cider or spiced ale (wassail) was

carried to the orchard and sprinkled over the

roots of the trees. The largest tree in the

orchard was selected and the villagers would

gather around and blow horns, bang kettles

and fire guns in order to “wake” the sleeping

tree. The Wassail song was then sung or

chanted as a blessing in order to keep the

tree free from evil spirits until the next years

apples appeared. Wassailing was particular

important when part of the labourers wages

would be paid in Apple Cider as the farmers

would need a good crop in order to attract

good workers.

Apple Tree Wassail

Oh apple tree, we’ll wassail thee

And hoping thou wilt bear

For the Lord does know where we may go

To be merry another year.

To grow well and to bear well

And so merrily let us be

Let every man drink up his glass

And a health to the old apple tree.

“Wassailing” has been associated with the New Year since as far back as the 1400 and is an old custom that takes place around Twelfth Night - 5th January. There are two different types of Wassailing - the House Visiting Wassail which is much like carolling and the Orchard Visiting Wassail.

Wassail gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon

term Waes Hael which means “Be Healthy.”

It was a Saxon custom that at the start of

every year, the Lord of The Manor would

shout “Waes Hael” and an assembled crowd

would shout “Drinc Hael” which meant

Drink and be Healthy.” The Lord of the

Manor would then give his peasants food

and drink in exchange for their blessings of

goodwill.

This custom progressed to people going door

to door bearing what was known as a “Wassail Bowl” filled with hot, spiced ale.

In return the householders would give them

food, drink and Christmas fayre such as

“Figgy Pudding” believing it would give

them good luck for the year. The Christmas

Carol “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” is

thought to refer to the tradition of

Wassailing especially as it was not always

an entirely innocent event. It was often

Canvey People

One of the best things we have done

so far locally is to climb and walk to

the end of the 1970s 1 mile-long

Occidental Jetty and explore

Canvey’s occidental refinery remains

which was a real thrill. It reminded

me of a whole city mapped out with

roads etc that has been left for many

years for nature to take over. The

concrete shapes and blocks left

behind are a fascinating mystery.

Another excellent visit was to the

buildings and remnants of a WW2

army camp and anti-aircraft site in

the Hadleigh downs which is behind

a row of houses that I pass daily on

the way to school without realising!

We are hoping that local people could help

us with any pictures they have which may

show remains in the background - they may

not have realised the significance of when

they took them. This could be photos of the

west Dutch cottage, the Lobster Smack or

Thorney Bay, the occidental refinery or ww2

bunkers etc. We are also interested to hear

memories and information about Canvey's

mysterious occidental oil refinery which is

of great interest to us.

To visit Liam and Joe’s website log on to:

www.beyondthepoint.co.uk

Two Canvey teenagers have taken their

interest in Canvey Island’s history one step

further with their new website - Beyond The

Point. We asked Liam to tell us what

inspired them to start the site and what

information they would be interested in

learning from local residents.

Liam told us: “We were inspired to start the

site because we knew that the historical

remains on Canvey won’t last forever and

we wanted to record the remains for the

future, so that people aren’t as puzzled as we

are now!

We also wanted the site to offer an insight

into the Island’s history that is not usually

covered anywhere else such as the secret

ruins of our past which give a different

perspective of local history. We hope to

increase people’s awareness of how close

and abundant remains of the past are around

us as well as building up interest in

“forgotten” local history. It’s quite amazing

how the past really is amongst our everyday

life and since we began the site, I notice

remains everywhere I go - things you would

never notice if you didn’t know about them.

These wonderful photographs of Kingsley Hall School were shared with Your Canvey Magazine and the Canvey Community Archive by Jill Mead and her brother Michael Pain.

Kingsley Hall School was founded by two

sisters - Irene and Gwen Evens and was

located on Central Wall Avenue. In first

opened in or around 1924 and early records

(Kelly’s Directory) show that it was

originally located in Beach Road.

In 1937, records show that

Kingsley Hall School was

located on Central Wall

Avenue in the house above.

Michael and Jill told us that

this house was built by their

great-grandfather Alfred

Harridge in 1908. Alfred was a

dentist who lived in a house

named “Kingsley” in Woking.

When he had the house on

Canvey built, he also named it

“Kingsley.” The property

included two acres of land and

went right back to the

lake. Alfred lived

there with his wife

and both daughters

and their families,

until his death in

1923.

Alfred’s daughter,

Mary came to live at

Kingsley with her two

daughters - Irene and

Gwen - when her

husband died. Gwen

and Irene went on to

found the school.

Irene, the elder sister

died in 1938 but the school continued for

many years. Gwen died in 1976. The old

house was demolished in the 80s.

We would love to hear your memories of

Kingsley Hall School, Miss Gwen and Miss

Irene. You can either contact Angela on

Cup matches continued to take centre stage during the past month where we progressed to the quarter finals of both the Essex Senior Cup and Ryman League (Alan Boon) Cup with wins over Romford and Ware respectively and have been drawn at home to Witham Town and away to Lowestoft Town respectively in the quarter finals. Sadly we went out of the FA Trophy going down at Hampton and Richmond who ply their trade in the Conference South.

We remain in touch of the play off positions

in the league as we approach a very busy

Christmas and New Year fixture period with

games against local rivals Concord Rangers

and AFC Hornchurch. Hopefully we can

report on good results in the next issue of

Your Canvey.

Off the pitch the Club passed its 2 year

floodlight test which prior to the test requires

the floodlights to be lowered and bulbs

replaced at a cost of well in excess of a four

figure sum. Thank god it is only every two

January in History

22nd January 1901

Queen Victoria died on 22 January 1901,

ending an era in which most of her British

subjects knew no other monarch. Her reign

was the longest of any monarch in British

history. She was only 18 when she came to

the throne and was Queen of the United

Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1837-

1901) and empress of India (1876-1901).

Victoria was the only child of Prince Edward

(Duke of Kent ) and Princess Victoria Mary

Louisa of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She was

born on 24th May 1819 at Kensington

Palace and was christened Alexandrina

Victoria. However, from birth she was

formally addressed as Her Royal Highness

Princess Victoria of Kent. Sadly, her father

died 8 months after she was born.

At the age of 21, Victoria married her cousin

Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha, a German

Prince. They married on the 10th February

1840 at the Chapel Royal in St. James's

Palace. They had nine children, 40 grand-

children and 37 great-grandchildren,

scattered all over Europe. Most of Queen

Victoria’s children married into other royal

families of Europe. In fact, both Queen

Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Phillip

are great-great-grandchildren of Queen

Victoria.

Prince Albert died in 1861 at the age of 42

and Victoria mourned his death for almost 10

years. For the rest of her reign she wore

black.

Queen Victoria was 81 when she died at her

home Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.

27th January 1832

On this day, author Lewis Carroll was born

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in Daresbury,

Cheshire. As well as being an author, he was

also a mathematician, logician, Anglican

deacon and photographer.

He was most famous for his book Alice in

Wonderland and its sequel Through the

Looking Glass. Charles Dodgson’s first

piece of work to be published under the name

Lewis Carroll was a romantic poem called

Solitude in 1856. In this same year, he met

Henry Liddell and his family who became a

great influence on his career. Liddell had a

young daughter named Alice and it is

believed that she was the inspiration behind

Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland which was

published in 1865.
