Year 5/6 – Monday 30th August 2021

Reading As we have finished reading ‘The Year the Maps Changed’ you will need to find another book to read for independent reading each day. Remember, it is an expectation that you will read independently for 30 minutes each day. This week in reading you will be given some more freedom over the Reading activities you complete. Attached to today’s post you will also find the ‘The Year the Maps Changed Choice Board’ Different activities are worth different amounts of points - activities that are more complex or require more time to complete, are worth more points. By the end of the week you will have to have completed a range of activities that total at least 10 points. There are a range of ways to do this. For example, you may choose to complete two 3 point activities, and two 2 point activities to get to 10 points. Or you may choose one 4 point activity, one 3 point activity and three 1 point activities. It is completely up to you - you have the power to choose. By the end of the week you will put together a Keynote (or PowerPoint or Slides) Presentation and submit it to Google Classroom with the work you have completed for Reading this week. We ask that this is submitted as a PDF document.

Writing How can we use similes and metaphors to enhance our poetry?

We are looking at how authors use similes and metaphors to enhance their poetry.

A metaphor is a word or phrase used to describe something as if it was something else, for example, “You’re a shining star”. This is a metaphor because you are not actually a shining star!

A simile describes something by comparing it to something else using the words like or as, for example, You shine bright like a diamond.

Warm Up: Highlight the similes in yellow and the metaphors in green. How could you tell the difference?

● She is a sly old fox ● He sings like an angel ● She is my rock ● Life is like a box of chocolates ● She is a shining star ● He is as tough as nails

Activity: Musicians will use similes and metaphors in their music. Draw up a T-chart in your book (example below) and get ready to list 6 similes and 8 metaphors that you hear from the following Youtube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IIH3rOdvGg

Similes Metaphors

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Competition Time! We are out to find the very worst, most random, nonsensical simile or metaphor. Check out this website for some examples. https://mikekerr.com/free-articles/the-funny-files/funny-similes-and-metaphors/

Create your own very, very bad simile or metaphor and post it this morning’s daily post on Google Classroom.

Maths Angles Around a Point

Warm Up: Play this ‘Guess the Angle Game’. Be careful, it’s addictive. Give yourself a time limit. No more than 4 minutes. https://nrich.maths.org/1235 Mini Lesson: There are 2 new rules for your geometric detective work...

Activity: Use the rules to find the value of the missing angles. Don’t forget to sketch each puzzle in your book and show your working out.

Daily Practice: Spend at least 10 minutes working on your goals on My Numeracy.

Personal Learning

"One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth.’

What does this mean? Well, as humans we can either stay on the same path we know, doing the same things we already know how to do. or we can challenge ourselves to do something new. It could be to learn a new language, or a new craft, try a new sport, or attempt to achieve something that has always been an “I’ll do that later.” Imagine our world if people didn't take a risk, didn’t try to find the cure for a disease, didn’t try to climb Mt Everest, didn’t try to do a checkside kick from the boundary during a Grand Final. Our lives would be so different. So, for the next 3 weeks we are hoping that you will do something outside your comfort zone. We would love to see people challenge themselves to achieve something that requires multiple days of practice. Time is the key. If you select something and say you have done it in 2 days then maybe your challenge wasn’t as much as a challenge as you thought. If you don’t succeed that’s okay too. If you have moved along that ‘skills continuum,’ then that is a win too. Think carefully about your challenge and let us know. Set yourself realistic goals to achieve and have a

go. We are excited to see what people challenge themselves to do.

Reading As we have finished reading ‘The Year the Maps Changed’ you will need to find another book to read for independent reading each day. Remember, it is an expectation that you will read independently for 30 minutes each day. Today at 11.30am you will be able to meet with your teacher to go through the structure of an essay, as well as plan for one of the those 4 point tasks from your choice board. This will be the perfect opportunity to bank 4 points - so make sure you make it to the Meet with your teacher! Continue working through the ‘The Year the Maps Changed’ choice board. You may want to think about creating your Keynote (PowerPoint or Slides) Presentation. As well as including the work you’ll complete today, make sure you put in the activities that you completed yesterday as well.

Writing What are the key elements for writing a Haiku poem?

Last week you brainstormed all of the different types of poems you could think of. Today, we are looking at Haiku poems! A haiku is a short poem with a set structure. The purpose of a haiku is to describe an event, object, scene and so on, so the reader can bring it to life in their own mind. It is a traditional type of poetry which originated in Japan. Haiku poems do not usually rhyme. Warm Up: Below are examples of 3 Haiku poems. Read through both poems and answer these questions:

1. What is similar about these poems? 2. How many lines does each poem have? 3. How many syllables are in each line?

Activity: Market Day is fast approaching! In fact, all I have been thinking about lately is stress balls, footy kicking competitions, and how many scrunchies I can buy with the money I’ve saved up. Imagine the craziness of Market Day - now, write a Haiku poem about what you visualised.

(Photos for inspiration!)

Maths Angles on a Line

Warm up: You know that James is the king of daggy (uh hemm… I mean, ultra cool) songs for learning. He found this song to teach his students about complementary and supplementary angles but felt it didn’t quite meet the cool factor that he expects from a video. He’s thinking some sic dance moves might do the trick. Watch and make up some dance moves to the chorus that James can use for his re-mastered version of the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiKZgRlUxA0

Mini Lesson: Here are 2 more rules for your geometric detective tool kit...

Use the rules to find the missing angles...

Activity 1 (Complementary Angles): Play this Match the Complementary Angles Game… https://matchthememory.com/gl1station2 Put your timer. You have a maximum of 5 minutes to play this game. Activity 2 (Supplementary Angles): Use a ruler to draw 6 sets of supplementary angles. You will need to draw them pretty big, at least half an A4 page. Then, estimate the value of each of the angles. Here’s an example…

Take a pic of each set of angles. Upload each pic, one by one, into this online protractor to check how close your estimations were… https://www.ginifab.com/feeds/angle_measurement/

Daily Practice: Spend at least 10 minutes working on your goals on My Numeracy.

BQT How can I PIMP MY STALL for Market Day?

Pimp My Ride was a TV show on MTV between 2004 and 2007. Basically they took run down cars and made them amazing, fantastical and fantabulous by adding modifications such as interesting paint jobs, cool leather leopard print seat covers or TV’s in the arm rests. Today your group is going to PIMP YOUR STALL for Market Day…. basically make it as interesting and visually pleasing as possible. You will need to create some of the following by hand:

- Decorations - Posters - Advertisements

Find what you can at home to create any of the above items by hand. Maybe you had an online order with some leftover cardboard or some coloured paper and paint pens. Or maybe you have an origami set, or some cool calligraphy pens you’d like to use. If you have absolutely none of the above and you live close to school, there will be some different things placed out at the office that you can use. Head past school on your daily walk and pick up what you need to PIMP YOUR STALL!

Spelling Warm Up: To get into the vibe of today’s spelling lesson (and to help with your pronunciation) it might be useful to practise speaking in a French accent. Watch the following video and get your French accent on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YtMC4yUDhc

Activity: We use some words in our English language that we have taken from the French.

Here are some examples of French words:

Chandelier, Pastry, Mauve, Peasant, Ballet, Bouquet

Do some research to find more French words that we use in English. Write a list in your book with as many as you can find. Then, write a short story (4-6 sentences) using at least 10 different French words. Reflection: Share your paragraph in today’s Daily Post.

Maths Geometry Detectives
