Hello and thank you for your interest in Watermark University!

Your curiosity is to be commended and it may even be the key to better health. Studies show that satisfying curiosities and learning new things can keep the mind agile and sharp. That’s why we created Watermark University. We know that stimulating the mind and strengthening the body have enormous benefits at any age and may even slow the process of memory loss.

Besides being good for you, keeping your brain and the body active and engaged doesn’t just improve your life – it’s a whole lot of fun! Enroll in a class or two that pique your interest. I’m confident you’ll learn something new and make a few friends along the way. While you’re at it, why not suggest a class or even volunteer to teach a subject which you’re passionate about?

Just give us a call to reserve a space in a class that intrigues you. Please keep in mind that class space is limited, priority is given to residents and most, but not all classes are free. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in a Watermark University course this semester!

Sincerely,

Melissa Goodnow Community Life Director

COURSE FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Sterling University: All the President’s Men (and Women)

Phil Leto April 4th 1:00pm A Who did the President nominate to serve as the Secretaries of State, Defense, Treasury, Homeland Security, Attorney General and other important Cabinet positions? Were they quickly confirmed by the Senate? How goes the implementation of policy regarding the economy, jobs, ISIS, health care and other Presidential priorities. Have the first accusations of scandals and inappropriate behavior involving the new President been made? Sterling University: Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal

Phil Leto January 17th 1:00pm A Conceived as a plan to heal America’s economy from the ravages of the Great Depression, many of the New Deals programs were introduced in the first one hundred days of Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. It became a vehicle for widespread societal change. From relief to banking regulation to rural electrification to Social Security to workplace reform, Americans began to look to Washington in times of need.

Sterling University: Hail to the Chief

Phil Leto January 3rd 1:00pm A On January 3, 2017, a new Congress, the One Hundred Fifteenth, takes office. Its first official duty is to meet in a joint session on January 6 to certify and formalize the preceding year’s Presidential vote. On January 20, the incoming President and Vice-President are inaugurated and the President delivers an inaugural address. Then, Washington comes alive with parades, Presidential Balls and other festivities. We’ll look at notable Presidential inaugurations and orations from America’s past. Sterling University: Mr. Chief Justice

Phil Leto March 28th 1:00pm A The Chief Justice serves as a spokesperson for the judicial branch, leads the business of the Supreme Court and presides over oral arguments. When the court renders a decision, he often decides who writes the opinion. Throughout our nation’s history, men like John C. Marshall, Roger Taney, Earl Warren, Warren Burger, William Rehnquist and John Roberts have served as powerful, yet often anonymous leaders of a coequal branch of American government. Sterling University: Our Mangled Legislative Process

Phil Leto February 28th 1:00pm A The President proposes, Congress disposes, and the courts interpret. That is the shorthand description of the checks and balances of America's federal system. Not anymore. Today Presidents legislate via executive order, courts cast aside the will of Congress in reaching decisions and Congress impedes the activities of the executive and the courts by ignoring nominations for vacant positions, paralyzed in a constant state of gridlock.

Sterling University: The Bonds of Federalism

Phil Leto April 18th 1:00pm A What do state Governors and Legislatures think of the new Administration? How goes the balance between the power of the national government and that of the States? Throughout America’s history, Presidents and Congress have waged battles trying to expand or constrict Federal power in the course of this enduring national debate. What does the 10th Amendment really mean? Do States have the right to nullify Federal Laws or secede from the Union?

COURSE FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Sterling University: The State of the Union

Phil Leto February 14th 1:00pm A Although not required by the Constitution to do so, a newly inaugurated President usually advises the American people, before a joint session of Congress, as to what he or she believes are the most pressing challenges and issues confronting our nation. While extolling the great virtue and industriousness of the American people, Congress is urged to take up the initiatives put forward by the Chief Executive. Sterling University: The Supreme Court

Phil Leto March 14th 1:00pm A By March, the President will have nominated someone to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, with perhaps several more vacancies to follow this term. A nominee must be considered by the Senate, which renders its “advice and consent,” in order to take his lifetime seat on the Court. Once a formality, the battles to confirm Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas show how contentious these matters have become.
