Resident Joe Chadderdon gave a great presentation with some wonderful video footage of the

Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Company last fall. This semester he will share extraordinary video

footage he has collected that depicts several of the beaches of the second World War. Please come

and listen to Joe's accounts of the war, and view the accompanying imagery. This is truly a one of a

kind look at a powerful time in history.

Kalalmazoo is known for many areas of invention and innovation, but you may not know of the

contributions made by Kalamazoo's own J.B. Rhodes. Beginning in the late 1800s, through the mid-

1900s, J.B. Rhodes created some major inventions connected with automobiles and railroad cars, as

well as many other extraordinary inventions. Join Cynthia Jeffrey, a history enthusiast and actual

relation of Rhodes for a special presentation describing this incredible man and his inventions.

The First Lady of the United States is not an elected office, yet this position has great power and

influence all its own. Many of our country’s presidential wives have used their station to impact

society through social causes, others have used their influence in matters of state. Regardless of their

personally motivated activity as First Lady, each has left a lasting impression on our country. This

program shares insights into their motivations and highlights important contributions.

Are you interested in what is happening in today's society? Do you like to have regular discussions

about current events. If so, you should join resident Ken Long and others for this class. Be prepared

for great conversation and debates.

Join Naya David Curtis for this in-depth look at the plots of some of the greatest movies of all time.

Each Wednesday session of this monthly class will involve viewing a classic film. Then on the adjacent

Thursdays, David will walk you through an analysis of the story, pointing out interesting historical

connections, cultural points of interest and more. You'll never look at your favorite movies the same

again!

Witness the most significant events of the 20th Century, from the Wright Brothers' first flight to the

landing on the moon, from WWI to the end of the Cold War, and from the first automobile to the

birth of the Internet. Twice a month, Natalie will run part of this phenomenal DVD series, which

features insightful narration, rare photographs and stunning footage tracing the global milestones

that paved the way for future generations. Each session will include discussion and personal

connections with the remarkable events and achievements that defined and shaped the world in

which we live.

As people get older, they often tend to value simple pleasures in life. One of the reasons why Sudoku

is one of the most popular games for seniors is that it reflects and reinforces the feeling of creating

order and getting things done. On top of that, studies have shown that Sudoku can help people

reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline, or dementia as they get older. Join Erin on

Fridays at 11:00 a.m. to learn and practice working your brain through this wonderful exercise that

promotes logic, deduction and problem solving in a fun and engaging way.

Maintenance Director John Windover continues to hold this monthly informative session to review

what is going on in Plant Operations. He'll review past progress as well as discussing what is being

planned for the month ahead. Each month John will describe work orders completed over the past

month and provide a preview of upcoming projects. Come and get a perspective on what the

maintenance team does throughout each month, including preparations required for inspections and

each month this summer to "talk trash". He'll give you insights into the "hows" and "whys" of the

housekeeping department, and answer questions you may have about the housekeeping services.

Questions are encouraged and welcomed. Location will alternate between the East and West first

floor atriums.

The unspoken language of the world has been around for years and years to allow those who can’t

hear to communicate. Each country has their version of sign language and together we will be

exploring American Sign Language. Grace, who recently took a sign language course at WMU, will be

teaching sign language basics, such as letters, numbers, and animals, in this weekly class.

Reading aloud can bring enjoyment as well as information to the mind, but novels and long

publications can become tedious. Join Erin to enjoy reading and discussing a variety of short stories

and essays that will lead to insightful discussion in addition to enjoyment of the literature itself.

This interesting class will be an opportunity to socialize with others and share in learning about some

of the most classic literature, authors and plot lines. Group members will gather together to read

through novels that have been well-known for decades, then follow up the reading with discussion

and a viewing of the corresponding film. These enjoyable styles of learning provide attendees with

the chance to share their own connections with these books and films.

Numerology is the ancient science of studying numbers. Do not let this frighten you. We use,

primarily, the numbers from 1 to 9, and if you can add and subtract you have it made. It is believed

that numbers are the cosmic code of the universe, and understanding the higher and lower vibrations

of numbers and how to use their energies will be of benefit to you. If you are looking for a fun, easy,

and often revealing way of improving your life by knowing yourself or others better, look no further.

All you need to get started is the date of your birth and the letters of your name.

This popular program brings an educational presentation into our Auditorium every month, along

with a free lunch! This summer we wrap up this season of Books & Ideas with two exciting

presentations, including Else Gephart from Kalamazoo College, who will present on The Monarch

Butterfly on May 3, and the return of Stan Robin with his entertaining and poignant monologues on

June 7. We hope you can join us for one, several, or all of these wonderful programs!

What are some ways we can get ourselves healthier? Each health talk will be facilitated by Sarita

Alexander, Inn Program Director and licensed nurse, on different topics; exploring different medical

issues, questions and how they affect health and well being, in correlation to national health topics.

Please see the calendar for what is being discussed each month.

Your Brain is the most important organ of your entire body. It has been stated, "Without brain health,

we don't have health." Our brain controls and monitors every function of our body 24/7. It is a

powerful and complex machine that we often take for granted. Obtain the ultimate guide for keeping

your brain healthy for your entire lifetime. Develop a personal plan of action with simple step-by-step

everyday changes that can make such a difference. Each monthly session will give you current,

reliable research and provide useful ways to keep your brain strong.

There are many products on the market that claim to be the "best" for your body, hands and face,

but many have unnatural ingredients that may harm your health. If you follow Denise's philosophy of

"I don't put anything on my skin that I wouldn't put in my mouth", you'll love this class that will teach

you how to use simple, all-natural ingredients to create lotions you know are safe and effective.

Lymphedema refers to swelling that generally occurs in one of your arms or legs. Sometimes both

arms or both legs swell. While there is no cure for lympedema, it can be managed with early

diagnosis and diligent care. Join therapists Lars Ruser and Kitty Stafford to learn about treatments

available, including manual lymphatic drainage, massage, and exercise. They'll also provide tips on

how to use compression stockings and other methods to help alleviate this common medical

occurance.

Sun, dry skin, makeup….these things can all take a toll on your skin, especially during the summer

months. That's why Bridget will be coming by once per month to give your skin a beauty treatment.

You'll feel better, look better, and protect your skin by giving it the moisture and nutrients that it

needs. Learn tips and secrets for keeping your skin in tip-top shape all summer long.

Gather with us in the Den for fellowship as we praise God's Word through scripture readings, singing

and discussion. You'll enjoy this uplifting class, led by Nancy Schripsma, where celebration and

inspiration is part of every meeting!

Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children; however, it turns out coloring can be

beneficial for adults as well — namely for its de-stressing power. Join Maddie and Lexi each month to

learn about the benefits of coloring as well as new forms of adult coloring that are being developed

every day. Each session will involve both discussion and practice in coloring for relaxation.

your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your

life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience. Join Erin to

explore and practice mindfulness in everyday activities. Each month you'll focus on a new area of

your life in which to be mindful as you go about things like eating, walking, listening, and more.

By popular demand, Housekeeping Director Michael Rice presents an encore presentation on his

personal journey in music in this unique class in which he will play songs that have had an influence

on his life, and share stories that just might inspire you to reflect on the things that have uniquely

shaped your own life.

There are many ways to enjoy having spiritual moments throughout your week. Join Carlene for this

class in which you will engage in a variety of spirit-moving activities from month to month. Some

weeks will be devoted to scriptural readings, inspirational stories and discussions, while others will be

filled with music and singing of hymns. We hope you'll join us.

Please join us, along with fellow residents, for a (non-denominational) Devotional Bible Study.

Together, we will read scripture passages and review discussion questions pertaining to the lesson of

the day. Our goal is to grow together in God's Word by making the Bible relevant and meaningful to

our everyday lives. Although this is a continuing study, everyone is welcome at any time! A new

lesson is presented each time we meet, and you are welcome to share, or just to come and listen.

There is no cost--all materials are provided. Enjoy this inspiring, caring, and fun group while learning

more about God's Word.

Have you ever thought about painting as being a meditative experience? Studies show that painting

and drawing can help boost recalling/memory skills as well as improving one’s communication. As art

involves expressing one’s inner thoughts and feelings, the act of painting may project emotions that

are otherwise indescribable. Furthermore, painting and drawing are continuous processes, therefore

improving flow of thought as one creates such artworks. Join Nancy to learn how to become relaxed

and focused through watercolor painting.

In this class, Community Life Assistant, Natalie Yang, with assistance from Erik Oliver, will teach you

how to make delicious Asian home cooking! Her recipes are healthier and lighter than what you will

find at your local Chinese restaurant. She will show you how to make dishes from fresh spring rolls to

yummy stir-frys. Don't miss out on the delicious fun!

Laila continues this popular class which features the cooking and culture of her Moroccan heritage.

Each month Laila not only brings delicious recipes to demonstrate and share; she also shares

wonderful stories and a passion for cooking that make this program an event, rather than just a class.

Popcorn is one of our favorite snacks each month at The Fountains. And overall, it's good for us too--

three cups provides as much fiber as a cup of cooked brown rice and more antioxidants than a serving

of fruit or vegetables for less than 100 calories! However, the extensive amount of sodium used to

flavor this popular snack has been linked to higher blood pressure, heart disease, stomach cancer,

and weak bones, in addition to water retention and bloating. Fortunately, there are now many ways

to flavor up popcorn than simply by adding salt! Join Nancy each month for a popcorn party in which

we will sample low-sodium alternative toppings that will have you wondering why you've been

puttng salt on popcorn for all these years.

Have you heard about this ridiculously-named fun new sport? Pickleball is fast becoming one of the

most popular recreational sports in America. A racquet sport that combines elements of badminton,

tennis, and table tennis, pickleball involves two, three, or four players using solid paddles made of

wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. The

sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a

net and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Come and learn what pickleball is all about!

Have you met Program Director, Sarita Alexander? Well we know she's an exceptional associate and

person, but she has an extra special talent that she's willing to share as well--her expertise at power

couponing. We all clip coupons here and there, but Sarita has a system that will save you more than

you ever thought possible! Join her for this special presentation on what she does to make the most

of coupons available everywhere--if you just pay attention and take advantage of them!

If you like to figure things out, and love the sense of achievement you attain by solving puzzles, be

sure to join Sarah on Tuesday nights. Each Tuesday she will have a puzzle to solve. These puzzles will

range from the jigsaw-traditional type, to those of the brain-teaser variety, with a few puzzle games

thrown in for good measure.

Back for another semester, Bronson Place Pickers will hit the town to discover hidden gems at

antique markets, re-sale shops, or a surprise place from Ken. Stops can be made along the way and

he will also take requests. He will provide tips and tricks for finding a bargain, and share his

knowledge and passion for "treasures". Like they say, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Be

sure to bring your own money if you want to buy anything and for lunch if the group wants to stop!

You've had fun learning to read dramatically in our Readers Theatre class for the fall and spring

semesters, but we're taking a turn for something a little different this summer. Let your performing

side shine this summer by taking a stab at lip sync. We may not have the voices to sing like the stars,

but we can sure have a great time lip syncing, dressing the part, and acting like our favorite stars

singing our most loved show tunes. Join Nancy to learn the art of showmanship in this unique new

class.
