Course Faculty Day and Time Location Advertising Through Time Megan Richmond 2nd Thursday – 11am Activity Room

Print ads, commercials, billboards, spinning signs- the tricks and techniques associated with advertising has

certainly changed throughout history. Over the next four months we will focus on how popular trends

and technology advancements truly drive the advertising efforts. All about Health Bayada Professionals 2nd Wednesday -11am Main Lobby

Senior safety, dementia, macular degeneration and cold weather preparations will be our main topics of

discussion that will be highlighted over the next four months. You do not want to miss out on these

informative talks given by true professionals. All about Grandparents Melissa Gravatt September 10th - 3:15pm Activity Room

National Grandparents Day is a secular holiday celebrated in the United States of America and the United

Kingdom since 1978 and officially recognized in a number of countries on various days of the year, either as

one holiday or sometimes as a separate Grandmothers' Day and Grandfathers' Day. During this chat we will

learn more about the holiday itself, celebrate all grandparents and discuss about some famous historic

figures. All things Delaware Megan Richmond 4th Tuesday – 11am Activity Room

Delaware is known as the "small wonder" and it is certainly true. The following topics will be discussed

over the next four month: local museums, politics, historic relevance and different counties. Of course

we will also delve into the variety of festivals and events that take place throughout the year that make

Delaware the place to live! We encourage all Delaware natives to join in and share their memories and

anyone who is new to the area to join and learn more about the First State! American Songs Community Life September 4th – 11am Activity Room

The Red, White & Blue - on this Patriotic Day we will learn the history behind some of our favorite

patriotic tunes! Did you know that the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" became popular among the British as

well as the rebels? A doodle was a simpleton and the phrase "stuck a feather in his hat and called it

macaroni" implied the backwoods bumpkins could put a feather in their coonskin hats and think they

were as elegant as European in the latest Italian style? Make sure you check out this song filled class as we

belt out the tunes and learn the meaning behind them.

In the culinary world there is an artistry to creating food. During this course our Dining Service Director

will take you on a journey featuring the tools and t techniques used to create exquisite meals and

presentations.

Beauty around the World Megan Richmond 2nd Tuesday - 11am Activity Room

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that could not be more of a true statement. Around

the world you will find all standards of what each location considers to be "beautiful". Each month we will

explore a new region of the world and find out what they consider beautiful, but remember that we are

all special in our own right! Bodies of Water Maria Boslego 4th Wednesday – 11am Activity Room The Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, The Dead Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef are all some well-

known bodies of water! During this program we will discuss what makes these and many other

bodies of water stand-out in our world whether it be their exotic qualities, healing powers or even if

it may have been where a historic event took place! Castles & Queens Maria Boslego 3rd Monday – 11am Activity Room

Buckingham Palace, the Hearst Castle, Pendennis Castle and The Tower of London are just of a few of the

many historical pieces of architecture we will feature. The saying "if these walls could talk" will hold

another meaning as we talk about the decor, personal history and significance of these well-known

castles and the families who lived in them! Classic TV Revisited Community Life 1st Tuesday – 11am Activity Room

Who doesn't remember Leave It to Beaver, the Andy Griffith Show, Lassie and Bandstand? We will take a

look at the actors, actresses and plot lines that made all of these programs must watch TV! You will

certainly enjoy remembering the characters and episodes that we all loved! Collections & Collectables Esther Weik November 2nd – 11am Activity Room

Many of us have collected items that are special to us and hold some sort of meaning. Some may collect

thimbles or spoons from their travels around the world, while other jumped on trends such as collecting

Beanie Babies! During the class we will share the art of collecting and some of the collectables that are

extremely valuable today.

Cruise Ships Explored Jim Kintz September 21st – 11am Activity Room

Have you ever taken a vacation on a cruise, ever worked on a cruise ship or even studied abroad on a cruise

ship? During this fun, enlightening class we will discuss the details of the inner workings of a cruise ship

from the events they offer, employee secrets and all of the behind the scenes details that make cruising a

vacation of luxury, relaxation and a favorite travel style of many.

Culture & Medicine Megan Richmond 2nd Monday – 3:15pm Activity Room

There is truth to the notion that two medical cases are never the same. Not only the physical anatomy of a

person, but also their personal beliefs that can play a role into the treatment they may or may not receive.

We will explores various cultures and their beliefs in regards to medical care and treatment. This will surely

be an eye opening program that you do not want to miss!

Current Events John Williams Select Wednesdays-6:30pm Activity Room

Come share your thoughts and ideas on today's news. John Williams, a prominent lawyer in Delaware

will keep you up to date on all the happenings of today through reviewing headlines, reading

newspapers and participating in lively discussions and debates. Earth, Wind & Fire Maria Boslego 3rd Monday - 2pm Activity Room

This hands on science experiment program will focus on many of the main natural elements that we

experience throughout the world. We will re-create a tornado, construct a volcano, and see the effects of

moon rocks. This will truly give you a new understanding of the environment we live in and how the

weather can impact our routine throughout the course of our day. Everyday items into Art Dana Schury 4th Tuesday- 2pm Activity Room

Do you know what to do with old CDs that you want to get rid of or some mismatched china that you have

collected over time that it may be time to toss? Just take a look around your house as there are countless

items that you may consider "clutter"- but these everyday items can be turned into art!

Famous Fishing Tournaments Megan Richmond September 7th – 11am Activity Room

Have you heard of the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland or the Flounder Pounder Tournament in

Millsboro, Delaware? There are many local fishing tournaments that have gained popularity over time and

have become some of the best known-tournaments in the world. During this program we will talk about

some of these tournaments and the rules and regulations that go along with getting the big catch!

Famous Loves Stories Megan Richmond 1st Tuesday 3:15pm Activity Room Who is in the mood for love? Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler and Pocahontas and John Smith, these are some of the most well-known literary romances of our time. It is time to delve a little deeper in to what made these couples and star-crossed lovers so iconic.

For our Freedom Rockland Veterans 2nd Monday – 2pm Activity Room

We are the home of the free because of the BRAVE! We are fortunate enough to have several veterans in

our community who proudly served our country. Each month we will select a different branch of service

to highlight and focus on their traditions, missions and legacies! Head to Toe Fitness Community Life Wednesdays – 10am Activity Room

What a better way to start the day then with a full body workout! From head rolls and shoulder shrugs to

scissor kicks and ankle bends! During this low-impact program we are sure to offer a full body program

that focuses on the muscles we use every day! Holiday Cocktails Dorene Stocker & Bobbi Cassidy 4th Tuesday – 3:15pm Activity Room

Join HR Director, Dorene, and Resident Care Director, Bobbi, as they take you on a flavorful cocktail tour.

Each month these ladies will design a special drink based on the feature holiday. Everyone will enjoy

sipping their cocktails and learning how to prepare the concoction.

Holiday Plants Helen Preiss December 7th – 11am Activity Room

From poinsettias and holly to mistletoe and evergreen, don’t these all evoke images of the holidays? These popular holiday plants are often given as a gift, hung on front doors and displayed on mantles! Let's discover some fun unknown information and history about these plants that we see most frequently during the holiday season.

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Kintz Classic Movie Jim Kintz 2nd Tuesday – 1:30pm 2nd Floor Lounge

Our Maintenance Director, Jim, is a film buff and loves sharing his passion for movies with everyone.

Follow the movies from the days of glamour and class. Discuss actors, directors, and the making of the

movie. Spend a nice afternoon with a good flick!

Lessons for Living Maria Boslego Select Wednesdays Main Lobby PhD Karl Pillemer's book entitled, 30 Lessons for Living, certainly created the foundation for this program.

Based on the book this program was created to gain life lessons from seniors in the community by asking

questions to learn about the residents and the decisions they have made along the walk of life and how

it has impacted their lives! This thought provoking class will be paired along with some general

knowledge based on the topic at hand.

Magic of Disney Megan Richmond 2nd Monday – 2pm Activity Room M-1-C-K-E-Y ... M-0-U-S-E! Disney is one of the most well-known companies and amusement parks in the

entire world. We will discuss Disney films, the main Disney parks, working for Disney and other lesser

known Disney initiatives over the next four months- you are certainly in for a magical time.

Mattel Toys Megan Richmond October 5th – 11am Activity Room Have you ever heard of Hot Wheels, Chatty Cathy or the Magic 8 Ball? Of course you have! The Mattel

Company is one of the largest producers of toys in the world and has many people rushing to the store to

make purchases! During this class we will look as some of the most sought after and popular toys in the

company's history! We can only imagine what they will come up with next. Mind & Balance Community Life Tuesdays – 10am Activity Room

During this exercise program we will complete fluid exercise motions, with recognizing our breathing

techniques and rate. We all need balance in our lives and during this program we will focus on the body

and the holistic approach to health. Mixed Media Community Life 4th Thursday- 6:15pm Activity Room

In this course you will use a small coloring photo as the beginning of a painting. A colorful square photo

will be selected that has elements that can be continued, such as a flower or horizon lines! Time to test

your artistic talents and have some fun!

Moving to the Music Melissa Gravatt Weekends – 11am Activity Room

It truly is the magic of music, wherein offers a healing power. Music can ease pain, motivate individuals,

improve motivation, increase endurance and even enhance blood vessel function. This exercise program

will help us get our bodies into a cardia rhythm when upbeat tunes are played and help us to wind-down

and relax when more melodic songs are played. Painting with a Twist Dana Schury 3rd Monday – 3:15pm Activity Room

We are going to take a new spin on this program, while keeping with the tradition of serving wine! During

this monthly program we will paint on canvases, as well as, glass cups, vases, and plates! You do not have to

be an artist to create a piece of work. At the end you can choose whether you would like to keep your

masterpiece or give it to a loved one as a gift!

Pinterest: Success or Fail Community life 1st Friday- 2pm Activity Room

Pinterest is a web and mobile application company that operates a photo sharing website. The site was

founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp. Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann summarized the

company as a "catalog of ideas," rather than as a social network, that inspires users to "go out and do that

thing". With that being said during this class we will be attempting to replicate and create Pinterest idea

and see if our result looks like what was pictured on the website!

Refurbished & Refreshed Dana Schury 4th Saturday - 3:15pm Activity Room

One of the hottest trends of today is taking "older" or "junky" looking items and turning them into

refreshed antique looking pieces! From picture frames and end tables to lamps and wooden signs we will

test out hand out and attempt to refurbish some objects that we can in turn display around the

community! Sing & Share with Joan Joan Wagner 4th Monday – 10:45am Brandywine Room Joan enjoys sharing her passion for music, psalms, and poetry as she leads a spiritual gathering. The program focuses to strengthen your beliefs and passions, while providing the opportunity for deep thought and reflection.

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Strength Training Maria Boslego Mondays – 10am Activity Room Strength training is a type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction which builds the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles. When properly performed, strength training can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health and well-being. During this program we will do a modified version of strength training to provide maximum benefits! Tai Chi Victoria McGonigle 3rd Tuesday – 10am Activity Room Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Join us for this stretching exercise which will help manage stress, promote good health, and improve quality of life. Technology Trends Megan Richmond 2nd Wednesday – 11am Activity Room What will they think of next!? First, you had a regular wristwatch that only told the time, now you

have an Apple watch that can make phone calls, track your steps and even pay at the local stores. Then

you had a phone that hung on the wall and made only phone calls now you have a wireless phone

that you can take anywhere in the world and it can check the news, tell the weather, and play music.

This class will certainly make you say "wow" and "I can't believe how much technology had changed" Time to Tone Maria Boslego Fridays – 10am Activity Room During this exercise program we will use light weights and our own body to create a dynamic exercise. Exercise helps to protect bone health and muscle mass, develop better body mechanics and can play a role in disease prevention. Now is the time to tone our bodies and mind. Watercolor Wonders Community Life 1st Thursday – 6pm Activity Room If you are an experienced artist, just beginning or have an appreciation for art then this is the perfect

course for you! Watercolor painting is an art form that creates artistic representations, usually on

paper, using pigments that are water soluble. You do not have to be Picasso or Matisse to have a good

time and test out your artistic talent!

Who done it? Maria Boslego 3rd Friday – 11am Activity Room There are countless unsolved mysteries, some famous, some local and some that we will never know

about. During this program we will talk about infamous cases, methods that the professionals use to solve

a case and also delve deeper into some events that have occurred in Delaware and the surroundings areas

that captivate our attention.

Wine & Candy Pairings Melissa Gravatt 1st Saturday- 3:15pm Brandywine Room Everyone has a favorite candy, but did you know you can kick your sweet tooth up a notch this year by

pairing your favorite candies with a glass of wine? Each month we will select a different type of candy and

see which wine is the perfect partner. Additionally, we will learn more about the particular candy and the

wine it is paired with.

Yoga Victoria McGonigle 1st Tuesday -10:00am Activity Room The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We think

of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. Yoga is about creating balance in the body

through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses and

postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Explore the inner environment of your body's

energy system. Zumba Time Davina Wilson Thursdays -10:00am Activity Room Grooving to the beats of salsa, flamenco and merengue music feels more like a dance party than a

workout, which is exactly what makes Zumba so popular. The Latin-inspired dance workout is one of the

most popular group exercise classes in the world.

It is time to use household items and try to make abstract art projects. The objective of the class is to use your creative energy and let your emotions lead you on the painting journey! Each painting will be personalized and unique. Art without Boundaries Donna Teleis 2nd Monday – 1:30pm Program Area Do you considered yourself an artist? If yes wonderful, if not this course is still for you as all you have to do is be willing to try! Join Donna as she uses the Mneme technique to lead a hands on, one on one, painting course! Check out our main street gallery for the Art without Boundaries master pieces!

Beauty of Flowers Dana Schury 1st Friday – 11am Program Area

All flowers have their own special meaning and story. During this program we will showcase roses, carnation, tulips, and hibiscus flowers to name a few. Each program will detail their true meaning and maintenance tips while providing an emotional and sensory stimulating feelings

Brush Strokes Dana Schury 4th Tuesday – 1:30pm Program Area

Painting can provide an emotional release and creating a calming impact. During this hands on class we will work as a group to create a picturesque painting.

Clem Bowen – Story Teller Clem Bowen 1st & 3rd Monday – 2:00pm Lounge

Join Clem as he tells original stories and folktales from around the world. They are complimented by his use of a fascinating array of traditional and handmade instruments!

Famous World Landmarks Nayas 3rd Monday – 3:15pm Program Area

Mount Rushmore, The Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, Gold Gate Bridge and many many more well know landmarks will be discussed and explored during this education and entertaining program! Stretch & Flex Nayas Monday – 11am Program Area

Stretching, in its most basic form, is a natural and instinctive activity. People often stretch instinctively after waking from sleep or after long periods of inactivity. There are many benefits associated with stretching, during the program we will do stretches that focus on increased circulation, alleviated back pain, increasing flexibility and balance, and improving cardiovascular health.

Rockland Place would like to thank each of our WU faculty members for donating their time, passions and hobbies by leading a course for us this semester. It is the following individuals who help to make our dynamic and innovative program stand out and successful!

Maria Boslego Community Life assistant Maria, has worked in the health care feel for several years. In Maria’s spare time she enjoys spending time with family, being active, and also enjoys fashion! Maria is an excellent addition to our team! Bobbi Cassidy Our Resident Care Director has always been passionate about health and wellness! In her spare time she enjoys exercising and spending time with family and friends! Debbie Cook Community Life Assistant Debbie Cook loves all things that involve creativity – she can often be found baking, crafting and providing sensory stimulation with our Pathways residents. In her spare time she enjoys cooking and spending time with family as much as possible. Her heart and positive spirit are true attributes. Jim Kintz Jim, our maintenance director, is always busy making sure the building is in tip top shape. In his spare time he enjoys classic movies, spending time with family and always looks forward to his annual cruise vacation! Justin Grilli Justin, our dining service director, has been in the culinary field all his life and has a passion for food. In his spare time he enjoys having out with family and friends, playing in a band and trying to cooking techniques. Victoria McGonigle Victoria comes to Rockland Place on a bi-monthly basis to lead the community in physical activity routines that focus on mediation and relaxation, while strengthening the muscles in the body. Victoria works for a company called Living Wellness. It is obvious that Victoria lives a healthy lifestyle, as she participates in regular physical activity and eats nutritiously. Kim Pepe Kim has been the business manager at Rockland Place and has been doing accounting for 30 years. Kim is a huge sports fanatic especially when it comes to the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. She enjoys spending time with the four wonderful men in her life. Every year Kim combines her two passions and takes a family vacation to Clearwater, Florida to attend several Philadelphia Phillies spring training games.

Jen Quinones Our Executive Director, Jen, is a great addition to our team this year! In Jen’s spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends and playing softball as well. Jen had a great outlook on life and fitness and wellness is very important to her! Megan Richmond Megan is currently the Community Life Director at Rockland Place and has been in this position for almost 5 years. Megan overseas the programming that takes place in Assisted Living, Our Place and Pathways. While earning her graduate degree in health promotion from the University of Delaware her main focus was on designing, implementing and evaluating programs for diverse populations. Megan enjoys spending time with family and friends, the beach, and traveling. Dana Schury Dana has been with Rockland Place for almost four years and she certainly has a positive impact on our community. Dana has a passion for life and she demonstrates this while leading programs. Other passions in her life include her kids, traveling and enjoying life to the fullest! As an art education major Dana certainly has the creative gene that keeps the community vibrant! Dorene Stocker Dorene, our HR Director, has an eye for fashion and a passion for life! Whenever she has some down time she enjoys hanging out with family and friend, boating and fitness. She also sites one of her favorite travel destination as Hawaii! Joan Wagner Joan says she has been a spiritual person for all of her life. She enjoys volunteering in local community to spread the word of the Lord and share his teachings. John Williams John is an Attorney at Law, as well as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Delaware. He received is B.A from Rider University and his J.D. from Widener University School of Law. In John’s spare time he enjoys music, travel, skiing, and attending sports events. He thoroughly enjoys the discussion group at Rockland Place as he feels he gets more out of it than the residents, one can learn so much through observation of others.
