“Renaissance” means rebirth and the “Early Renaissance” begins the return to humanistic thinking and classical learning. Artists study the great examples from antiquity to create a more life-like, organic figure that responds to a rising middle class empowered with wealth. A well-known example is Alessandro Botticelli’s Birth of Spring.

January - "Jackson Pollock" - was an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his unique style of drip painting. With this class, we will also be taking a trip to The Guggenheim Museum in NYC to see some of his work. The trip will take place on Tuesday, January 17th. Please sign up in the Community Life Trip Binder if you are interested in attending the trip.

Meditation can wipe away the day's stress, bringing with it inner peace. See how you can easily learn to practice meditation whenever you need it most. Learn about the different types of meditation and the elements of meditation. A quick lecture will start this class and then we will put what we have learned to use.

February - "Norman Rockwell" - was talented at a young age, he received his first commission at age 17. In 1916, he created the first of 321 covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell's Americana images were loved by the public.

April - "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci" - Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer.

March - "Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni" - Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. With this class, we will also be taking a trip to The MET in NYC to see some of his work. The trip will take place on Tuesday, March 21st. Please sign up in the Community Life Trip Binder if you are interested in attending the trip.

The most overlooked and arguably, the most important word in health is “balance”. Better body balance makes it easier to move and helps prevent injury. But it’s a “use it or lose it” kind of thing, which means it’s important to practice balance at all ages. Meet Jeff Ciolino, Occupational Therapist and Balance Specialist! Residents go through his obstacle course of walking backwards, stepping on certain blocks, walking over blocks, all while having fun and building up their strength for improved balance. Music is played, people clap along to encourage one another, and different stretches are taught throughout the class. Come join us for this fun and exciting class!

Humanism in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France produced magnificent portraits of nobles and wealth merchants. For example, the famous Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck shows a couple in voluminous robes standing in a bedroom, holding hands. Are they getting married? The symbolism of the furnishings surrounding them may give us a few clues. We will study iconography – the meaning of images in art.

The greatest artists of all time lived around the same period: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Giorgione, and Titian. We study their “greatest hits,” such as Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, and Titian’s Venus of Urbino. Art reaches an astonishing level of expression, focused on ideal beauty and perfection.

Astrology is the study of movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world. This class will provide an introduction to astrology and a look at your horoscope. Learn how the positions and relationships of the sun, moon, stars, and planets in order, have an influence your actions.

Before Henry VIII married Anne of Cleves he had only seen her face in a painting. The great German and French artists of the 16th century produced some of our best-known portraits. Among their artists with exceptional gifts were Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein the Younger and Jean Fouquet. We will also study the moralizing scenes by Pieter Brueghel the Elder.

March 15th at 1:30 pm- "Spiritual Wellness Month" - Faculty: Christine Nazzaro - A growing body of research suggests that religion and spirituality may help some people better cope with illness, depression and stress. Although religion and spirituality may not cure illness, they can have a positive effect on your health. Several medical suggest that people who have regular religious practices tend to live longer and may be better able to enjoy life despite health issues like chronic pain. We will end the class with a meditation session.

April 6th - "Why Do We Fast?" - Fasting in Sanskrit is called upavaasa. Upa means "near" + vaasa means "to stay". Upavaasa therefore means staying near (the Lord), meaning the attainment of close mental proximity with the Lord. Chandra will explain in further detail, why in the Hindu religion they fast for certain holidays and occasions.

April 19th at 4:15 pm - "Humor Month: How Laughter Is Good For Your Health" - Faculty: Chandra Sanchara - We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues. People who believe in the benefits of laughter say it can be like a mild workout -- and may offer some of the same advantages as a workout. Credit: WebMD.

January 5th - "Back To Basics: Hindu 101" - What is Hinduism? Hinduism, also known as the Sanatana Dharma, or "Eternal Way," is our planet's original and oldest living religion, with over one billion adherents. It is the world’s third largest religion after Christianity and Islam. Hinduism is largely an Eastern religion. About 90 percent of all Hindus live in India. Hinduism emerged in South Asia around 2000 BCE, thousands of years before Jesus or Muhammad lived. Learn more about Hinduism with Chandra as we bring this ongoing course back to the basic about the religion itself.

February 2nd - "Why Do We Ring The Bell In A Temple?" - The ringing of the bell produces what is regarded as an auspicious sound. It produces the sound Om, the universal name of the Lord. There should be auspiciousness within and without, to gain the vision of the Lord who is all-auspiciousness. The moment bell rings your brain is emptied of all thoughts. Invariably, you will enter a state of trance where you are very receptive. The bell works as anti-dote to the chaos of your mind. Before you enter temple it helps you to calm down & prepares you for the spiritual awareness you are going to experience. Join Chandra to learn more about bells in the Hindu religion.

March 2nd - "Why Do We Worship the Kalsha?" - First of all what is a kalasha? A brass, mud or copper pot is filled with water. The water in the kalasha symbolizes the primordial water from which the entire creation emerged. It is the giver of life to all and has the potential of creating innumerable names and forms, the inert objects and the sentient beings and all that is auspicious in the world from the energy behind the universe. The leaves and coconut represent creation. Join Chandra as she explains more about the purpose of the Kalsha.

The object of the game is for a player to play all the dominoes from his or her hand onto one or more chains, or "trains", emanating from a central hub or "station". The game's most popular name comes from a special optional train that belongs to all players.

Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Colloquially, it is widely known as Presidents' Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents, not just George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is also in February. Purim, which literally means “lots,” is the holiday in which Jews commemorate being saved from persecution in the ancient Persian Empire. Purim is the most raucous holiday on the Jewish calendar. Observance of the holiday begins with dressing up in costume: some people choose to dress as characters from the Purim story, and others dress in non-Purim-related costumes. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to listen to the story of Purim chanted from Megillat Esther (“The Scroll of Esther”) and to hear every word. It is customary to make loud noise with a noisemaker called a ra’ashan in Hebrew, or grager in Yiddish, every time Haman’s name is mentioned, in order to fulfill the obligation of blotting out Haman’s name. St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. But for all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling. After the lecture there will be a video shown from History.com about his life.

It’s becoming increasingly clear to the medical community that it’s just as important for older adults to stay active as it is for their younger counterparts. April - "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinc" - Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer.

February - "Norman Rockwell" - was talented at a young age, he received his first commission at age 17. In 1916, he created the first of 321 covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell's Americana images were loved by the public.

Core exercises are about more than just strengthening your abdominal muscles; they also strengthen your hips, back and all muscles in the midsection of the body. The core is your center of gravity and where all body movements begins. Having a strong core has also been shown to help alleviate lower back pain. Join us for this interesting spin on core training!

Come join us for this fun and exciting new class!

Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. We will take part in the fun Easter tradition of dying eggs.

January - "Back To Basics: Hindu 101" - What is Hinduism? Hinduism, also known as the Sanatana Dharma, or "Eternal Way," is our planet's original and oldest living religion, with over one billion adherents. It is the world’s third largest religion after Christianity and Islam. Hinduism is largely an Eastern religion. About 90 percent of all Hindus live in India. Hinduism emerged in South Asia around 2000 BCE, thousands of years before Jesus or Muhammad lived. Learn more about Hinduism with Chandra as we bring this ongoing course back to the basic about the religion itself.

Marilyn will teach all different techniques using all different media. Learn how to use watercolors, acrylics, pastels and more. February - "Why Do We Ring The Bell In A Temple?" - The ringing of the bell produces what is regarded as an auspicious sound.

Despite the demands of his rigorous Met schedule, Mr. Crolius continued to remain active as a concert soloist and recitalist in the New York area. The group has performed from Maine to Maryland singing a broad range of purposefully non operatic repertoire. Mr. Crolius’ prior musical background includes two seasons performing with the Gregg Smith Singers, a three year enlistment in the Soldiers Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band, and degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music. Since his retirement from the Met, Ross has shifted his focus to teaching voice and lecturing about opera. As a teacher, he has recently been added to the voice faculty at the Mozartina Conservatory in Tarrytown, NY. As an opera lecturer, Ross keeps very busy presenting opera talks primarily at senior residences throughout the local region. Mr. Crolius resides in Westchester County with his wife Nancy, also a former Met Opera chorister.
