In the past month the Self Study Committee has made very diligent efforts to contact every member of the parish through a series of Listening Groups. The purpose of these efforts has been two-fold: First, to identify all members of the parish; Second, to identify major areas of interest and concern. This information is being used in an anonymous way to form our parish survey.
Very soon you will receive information concerning our Self Study Survey which will be used to produce our Parish Profile. This ‘essential’ document, the Parish Profile, will be used by the diocese and the Discernment Committee in calling our new priest. Current parishioner contact information is very important for the survey activity. Please ensure that home and email addresses, where applicable, are current. The survey will be distributed via this information.
Participation by the parish has been very encouraging in the Self Study efforts. Our ministries and concerns are numerous and varied for a parish of our size. This says volumes about our dedication, consideration, and commitment. Our committee is confident that our efforts will genuinely reflect the parish and call a priest truly interested in our congregation, worship, and missions.
Several other activities are ongoing and in parallel with the Listening Groups and survey formulation. Planning was finalized for the collection, distillation, and presentation of our committee efforts in our Parish Profile. You will soon see evidence of these efforts in a large poster in the narthex. This poster will reflect progress of the Self Study and Discernment Committees towards our goal of calling a new rector.
Faithfully submitted on behalf of the Self Study Committee, Jim Wayland

Prayer for Search of Rector
As many of you have noticed, the temperatures have been on the rise around Holy Apostles it has been a little uncomfortable. Unfortunately our two air conditioners are damaged and only one unit is partially operational. So the fans you see around the rooms are not Holy Apostles new drive to go green but, our attempt to keep things a little more comfortable for you. The vestry would like to extend their gratitude for your patience and understanding as we work to address the current environmental issue.
Unfortunately, addressing the air conditioning issue is not going to be easy. The long term solution requires that we replace the current heat pump with a ten ton package outside. Doing this involves significant work and carries a price tag of almost $40,000. As you can imagine, our budget is not positioned to cover this size of an expense. Our other option is to repair the current unit and do some duct work to
optimize air flow at a price of almost $13,000. This work comes with a one year warranty and will get us through the current emergency, however, the unit will need to be replaced in the future.
The Vestry carefully considered both the option to repair and replace. The challenge is whether or not we should make a sizeable investment in a short term solution. Is it a good idea to invest almost $13,000 now only to
come back in a few years and invest another $40,000? In the end we recognized the need to act quickly because of the rapidly deteriorating conditions for all of us who work and worship here. The Vestry, therefore, has elected to pursue repairing the unit over replacing the unit. In the end, we simply cannot afford to presently replace the system.
Given the rate at which things are heating up we don't have time to raise the funds needed to cover the replacement costs and further delay taking action. Although the option to repair is less expensive we are still financially challenged to cover this work and need help. As a show of commitment, the Vestry is contributing over $5,000 to the repair costs and we would like to ask that you also consider a donation. Contribu-tion is optional and you may donate any amount. We are very grateful for anything that you can give. Donations should be made between now and June 1st. Please indi-cate "air conditioning repairs" on all contributions for this fund.
Our church and every member of this family are very important to us. We want eve-ryone to feel welcome and comfortable in this place of worship and are grateful to have you here. We are also grateful for the many sacrifices and contributions that you make on behalf of Holy Apostles. You make this the wonderful place that it is. Thank you!

Many thanks to the awesome group that pitched in for the annual parish clean-up days. Many people gave their valuable time and worked so hard to make our church look great.
A special thank you is given to Dominic Gentile of Jan-Pro for lending a commercial floor cleaning machine for our use.
Bill Davis did a fabulous job of sprucing-up the portico entrance with his pressure washer. Thank you to everyone!
Thank you all for your support. We currently have in the Holy Apostles Men's Club Lawn Care Funds $1,705.00 as of April 17th. Our current funding should handle the expense into July or early August.
Our professional lawn crew cut and edged the Holy Apostles lawn on Friday, April 15th and again April 22nd so that it was perfect for Easter Sunday. Currently, the lawn will be on a 10-day cutting schedule with edging every other time.
Thank you again from the Holy Apostles Lawn Volunteers and the Men's Club!

A thank you is given to all the individuals that contributed funds toward the pur-chase of the flowers that where arranged for Easter. The members of the Altar
Guild were so very busy on Saturday preparing the church to make it perfect for the Easter festival. Holy Apostles was radiant with the six beautiful
floral arrangements that the Altar Guild so skillfully created. In addition, roses adorned each row leading to the altar and the crosses at the entrance to the church were also decorated with greenery or flowers. This was the most beautiful Easter!

The EYC has had a fantastic year! We started the year with a pool party and will soon end the year with a lake party. In between, we have had fun meetings at the church under the excellent leadership of Elizabeth Rabon where we have done everything from planning our service projects to playing fun games like jeopardy and acting in silly skits. Parents of the church supported us by providing meals for all of our church meetings and hosting fun events. We especially loved Movie Night at the McCombs and the Overnight at the Gilbert Farm. Fishing has never been so much fun!
We also enjoyed our service projects at Christmas singing at the Retirement Home and using our allowance money to buy clothes and toys for needy teenagers. We appreciated the support of the parish in our fundraiser, the restaurant "A Taste of Heaven," which gave the EYC members the opportunity to cook, decorate, clean, and serve our parish.
We enjoyed serving the church by
donating and preparing salad and setting up on Saturday and then serving at the Palm Sunday Salad Bar. We also thank the members of the parish that provided additional food to enhance our salad bar.
EYC worked on the Saturday before Easter stuffing plastic eggs with goodies and then hosted the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. The event was enjoyed by the young people big and small.
EYC is looking forward to the EYC End-of-the-Year Party at Lake Martin on May 21st and to next year when we will be serving others and having fun together again!

The Daughters of the King shared a retreat at the very beautiful farm of Lynda and Paul Gilbert on April 15th and 16th. As always, where the women of Holy Apostles are gathered, there was a lot of wonderful food.
The retreat was led by Rosemary Bogan who taught us to pray in color from the book, Praying in Color. We learned that even people with ADHD can medi-tate with paper and sharpies.

Courtney Sargent and Bill Davis flew the Holy Apostles banner and boiled shrimp at the Discovery United Methodist Church Battle of the Bands event Saturday, the 9th of April. This was part of an ecumenical effort to get to know our neighbor church and promote our upcoming 14th Annual Crawfish and Shrimp Boil. Bill and Courtney were warmly welcomed and given a prime spot next to the entrance and registration table. A crowd of an estimated 200 people attended the event.

Like every year, the Alabama EYC holds a conven-tion to vote on their Youth Department members. I attended this convention this year and had a great experience and learned a lot of new things. I have always been very connected with the diocesan events with Camp McDowell and Happening, but this was my first EYC Convention.
This event gave me a sort of feeling of empower-ment and a real inclusion with the decisions of how the EYC will be run this upcoming year. I was actually nominated by somebody to be a YD repre-sentative but I, unfortunately, do not have the time required to be a YD representative.
This event was full of things to do. The first day was sort of a chill day because we were supposed to get there at 6 p.m. for dinner but, the storms delayed that. The next day was huge. We had our sessions where we voted on five members at large (YD members from wherever in the diocese) and two YD’s from the TVA area, the Birmingham area, and the Montgomery area. After that we had an afternoon activity. We could either go to the park, the zoo or stay at St. John’s. Later that night we had an open mic night with a few acts from the youth and a small band performance from Worth Stuart, Corey Jones, and Daniel. Sunday was our day to say all of our goodbyes and cele-brate Palm Sunday with St. John’s church.
One thing that was very enjoyable for me personally was getting to go to my hosts’ house for both nights and get to know them a little. A host home is a house nearby the church that someone offers to take a few people from the church for the nights and takes care of the sleeping arrangements and possibly breakfast.
I was the only member from the Holy Apostles EYC to go to this event or to some of the other EYC events. I want to encourage every member of our EYC to go to one of these and represent our church. I know they will enjoy these EYC events as I did this special weekend.

Almighty God; Send down upon your Church and the Diocese of Alabama the comfort of your Holy Spirit, that this same spirit may lead us in this time of transition. Guide us as we seek your wisdom, so that we may choose a bishop who will walk in your ways, and so draw our hearts to you, that in all that we do we may glorify your name.
We pray this through your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Do something for someone for which they can do nothing in return. Draw your satisfaction from the act of doing for others. It's that simple. This concept is why Habitat holds a special place in my heart. Each year I am grateful for the privilege to be involved with this very important ministry and this year is no different. In April, Bill Davis and I stood on the grounds of a newly completed home watching family after family come forward with smiles and tears in their eyes. It's all you need to see to realize the true reward of this ministry and the power of the Holy Spirit. This year, however, we were treated to a little "lagniappe." The son of one of the home
owners provided all the reward. This young man, who looked to be about six to eight years old, never stopped smiling and throwing a thumbs up to everyone while he waved his ceremonial hammer in the air. In his joyous world, at that moment, there was no greater trophy.
First, I would like to thank everyone that volunteered for Habitat. It was my great pleasure to work with Stacia Sebura, Felicia McCord, Mike Lewellan, and Andy Davis. We hung insulation, built a deck, painted and even did some roof work. Most importantly, however, we met some great people and did some great work for a very important
organization. I think that anyone who has ever worked one of these projects would agree that there are not many better ways to spend a Saturday. Carla Whitt and her two children now have a home that will bring them joy for years to come. Not only that, as Carla told CBS-42, Habitat has a new volunteer for life. So not only does the organization build homes and community but, it also builds community service.
Getting involved is simple! Grab me or anyone that knows me at Holy Apostles and ask. A quick handshake and maybe a hug and you're in! No initiations, no fees, no tests. I will be looking for you! This year we ran into a few conflicts and our attendance was down but, you can mark my word that next year I plan to bring an army of volunteers. So go ahead and mark your calendars now for next March and April. Besides, if a bus load of high school kids from Chicago can come down and build a home in Birmingham, we can bring a caravan from Hoover.
But wait, there's more! If you are looking for other opportunities to be involved with Habitat, Mike Lewellan and I are joining the "Go to Gang". This on-demand team will be available to support Habitat when they are running short of volunteers. No commitments are required. When they need you, they call or email. If you can make it, you go. If not, you say "no." The coolest part of the deal: You get to pick up some mad construction skills for free! So if nothing else, come out and learn how to add a deck, paint a room or frame an addition. You get great instruction from friendly, knowledgeable people. All tools and materials are provided. And at the end of the day a young man just might throw you a heart warming smile and a thumbs-up!

A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so
small and helpless?"
"Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you."
The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I do not have to do anything but, sing and smile to be happy."
God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. You will feel your angel's love and be very happy."
Again the child asked, "And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I do not know the language?"
God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will
ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."
"And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"
God said, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."
"Who will protect me?"
God said, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life."
"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."
God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you."
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, "God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."
"You will simply call her, Mom."
A Thought to Ponder
