The highest gold producing country is the Republic of South Africa

South Africa alone is responsible for about one half the gold produced in the world.

China, Canada and the United states also produce much of the worlds gold.

Gold may be found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock. So everywhere. When gold is heated, it can be melted to form wafers or bars.

Gold Panning was one of the first ways to get gold from the earth.

There is nearly 20 million tons of gold in the sea. However it is very dilute.

The magma in volcanic pipes is usually one of two characteristic types, which cool into igneous rock known as either kimberlite or lamproite. The magma itself does not contain diamond; instead, it acts as an elevator that carries deep-formed rocks (xenoliths), minerals (xenocrysts), and fluids upward.

These are rough diamonds. Diamonds can come in almost every color. Diamonds are made from carbon. The same carbon that makes diamonds also makes Graphite the stuff inside your pencil. The only difference is the way the crystals form.

A spinning wheel polishes the diamonds to give them flat areas called facets.

Diamonds after they are cut and polished. There are so many different shapes.

This is a Canadian diamond.

This is where the Canadian Diamond Mines are located.

The mine extends under ground hundreds of meters.

So now we know where gold and diamonds come from. How do I make them into jewellery? This is a picture of goldsmiths people who make jewellery, from 500 years ago. We use many of the same tools now as they did back then.

The very first goldsmiths formed metal into jewellery by blowing into a fire with a tube to make the fire hot enough to melt gold.

Here are some of a goldsmiths tools and work bench, some of which I have brought.

Here are a few pictures of rings I have created using diamonds and gold. Some gold is called white gold, but it is only white because I mix it with a white metal called nickle. Nickle makes rings very strong.

This ring has three different colors and three different shapes of diamonds.

Diamonds of all different sizes can be set into a ring.

Sometimes people still like yellow gold rings with special designs.

This type of ring is called an engagement ring. You give this to someone you want to marry.

The small ring next to the engagement ring is called the wedding band. You get this one when you are married.

Most rings are round inside, but not this one...

This ring looks kind of like a flower don't you think?

You can see the ring is actually three rings put together.

This wedding set has over three hundred diamonds.

The top of this ring is supposed to look like a lightsaber from the movie star wars.

This diamond has no prongs or claws to hold the diamonds.

The top of this ring is supposed to look like a snowflake.

Sometimes you can use different gems like a ruby in wedding rings.

Most rings have 4 prongs or claws to hold the diamond. This ring has 6 claws.

This is a black diamond with a few small white diamonds on the sides.

Black diamonds are not really black. They are actually very very dark green, but they appear black.
