NATA YOUNG SCIENTISTS OF THE YEAR AWARD 2018 Congratulations to the students of Umina Beach Public School who entered the 2018 NATA Young Scientist of the Year competition. Our school has a very proud recent history in this competition and once again, the students have demonstrated some outstanding scientific knowledge and understanding. This year’s theme was ‘Medical Science – Towards 2050 ’. Students were required to undertake an investigation around any topic relating to the theme of a medical science, both now and in the future. The entries were judged by a wide variety of scientists across several fields. Kayleigh (6B) was awarded a top 10 finish in her age group for her investigation ‘Diabetes testing – Past, Present and Future’ Chloe (2L) was also awarded a top 10 finish in her age group for her investigation ‘Vaccinations – Do we need them and why?’ Charlotte (6M) and William (3C) finished an amazing second in their age group for their joint investigation ‘Type 1 Diabetes – Looking at Early Detection and Prevention’ Umina Beach Public School is extremely proud of these budding scientists and their achievements.

Smart Art at UMINA BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOL During the year 4B have been working on a project called Smart Art. The students have been working on individual and collaborative pieces of art that support their learning and understanding of inclusion. It has provided students with opportunities to work alongside some members of the wider

community to express and develop compassionate conversations around inclusion and especially those with disabilities in our community. Some students even found it a supportive platform to discuss some of their own disabilities and have open conversations with the wonderful supportive staff at Ability Links, Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) and Octapod. “Smart Art was an amazing experience, we got to meet some lovely ladies, and one even had a guide dog named Rosco! We learnt that inclusion means not to leave anyone out because of how they look, act or speak. We made a painting that connects together like a jigsaw puzzle. We each had to design a puzzle piece that represents us and how we all fit together to make 4B, even though we are different. This is our way of showing inclusion”. Hannah and Bella on behalf of 4B.

As part of participating in this amazing experience, Umina received a $3000 grant to purchase resources to support inclusion. We selected fine and gross motor items and sensory support resources to be used across the school. Students and teachers have loved using these resources already and will be able to keep using them for many years to come. We are extremely grateful to have been invited to be a part of this project and thank ABILITY LINKS, OCTOPOD and CDAH for their involvement.

A word from the organisers: ‘Smart Art Includes You’ #2 Our aims: 1 Raise awareness of the value and importance of inclusion for people with a disability. 2 Stimulate young people to explore what inclusion of people with a disability means and what it looks like 3 Stimulate and support students to explore the concept of inclusion and share their insights and perspectives through art

We collaborate with two community organisations to help us deliver that message, and offer other pathways to deepen students’ understanding and opportunities for self-expression and learning. Our partners are Octapod, and CDAH (Community Disability Alliance Hunter). Octapod is an arts organisation servicing the Lower Hunter regions' arts and cultural community to be vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable. CDAH is a user-led peer support organisation run for and by people with a disability and their family members. Ability Links invited ten schools (including Umina Beach) to bring together students from one or two classes to attend a series of three workshops during Term 2. “Smart Art is all about bringing together art and education about a very important subject - inclusion. Not just inclusion, but, inclusion of people with disabilities.”

RECIPES FROM THE 1950’s After a recent clean out in the archive room, an old recipe book from the ‘50’s was found. These recipes were all submitted from students as their favourite family recipe. We thought we’d share a few with you.

BEST EVER RECIPE 1 x large grassy field ½ dozen children 2 or 3 x dogs 1 x piece of brook 1 x picnic lunch 1 x cricket set

Mix children and dogs well together and put them in the field, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle field with flowers, spread blue sky over all and bake in hot sun. When brown remove and set to cool in a bathtub.

If you have not already could you and all members of your household, (young and old) please fill in this set of surveys this week. By getting involved with the survey we will send a strong message that we want to improve Umina and that we deserve the funding. Could everyone fill in each of these surveys as we look to upgrade the skate park, BMX track, and basketball court and install seating and shade for everyone to enjoy the park.
