From the Principal…

WELCOME TO TERM 4 This week we welcome our Kindergarten 2019 parents and students to our school. They will be visiting every Wednesday for the next four weeks and I know that we will make them feel very welcome here. Mrs Moulton and Mrs Charles have been very busy getting the Early Birds program organised which parents will find very helpful and informative.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE Yesterday before and after school care commenced at our school. Central Coast Community Connections are providing the service to our parents and staff. This service is available from 6:30am and operates until 6:30pm. Enquiries can be made on 0413 849927 or by email to [email protected]. We are so pleased to have this service operational.

PARENTS PLEASE HELP! Children are not permitted to play on the fixed equipment or in the sandpit before and after school. Parents can assist staff by ensuring that their children are not on the equipment or in the sandpit during these times.

VOLUNTEERS MORNING TEA All of our volunteers are welcome to attend a thank you morning tea in the library on Friday 26 October at 11:15am in the library. Teachers will send home invitations shortly but please do not wait for one. Put the date in your diary and come along so we can say thank you.

GRANDPARENTS DAY Grandparents of K-2 children are welcome to come to our Grandparents Day on Thursday 22 November. This is a special day for grandparents. There will be a short assembly in the hall before grandparents can visit classrooms followed by a picnic lunch. Please help to keep this a special treat for the children and their grandparents. Our hall is barely big enough to fit all of the grandparents in so we are asking parents not to take up seats in the hall. Last year we had grandparents outside the hall who could not get a seat whilst parents and toddlers were occupying seats. Any performances will be repeated at Presentation Days at the end of the year so let’s work together to make it special for grandparents and grandchildren.

SMITHY THE MUSICAL It is now only 7 weeks until "Smithy - The Musical" takes off! There is excitement in the air and some classes are making lots of progress on their items. A special thank you must go out to Ms Eves and all the children involved in the Art Club. Thank you to everyone for all the lunchtimes you have spent making the props that will help make "Smithy" so memorable. Tickets will go on sale in a few weeks. Don't forget about costume requirements and if you want to have a listen to the songs they can be found here: https://mrbonnor.weebly.com/smithy.html

In the near future there will be a note sent home asking if you would be interested in buying a DVD of the performance which is being professionally filmed by SMC Productions. So keep your eyes peeled for that!

YEAR 5 BRISBANE WATER EXCURSION Last term, Wednesday 26 September, Year 5 went to Brisbane Water Umina Campus to learn about some subjects that they do in High School. 5B and 5E watched a video about high school and they had to write 3 things they liked about it, 2 things they didn’t know and 1 question, they all shared excellent points. 5V, 5E and 5W learned how to cook Vegemite scrolls using vegemite, puff pastry and cheese in Cooking Technology class. They found out how to know if it’s an acid by the colour turning pink or an alkali turning green and then yellow in Chemistry. Then 5V and 5W went treasure hunting in the 3 storey library. Year 5 learned more about team work during lessons and also learned that high

school wasn’t as bad as it seemed. They all had a wonderful time and now they are excited to start

high school in 2020.

PENINSULA LMG YEAR 5 STEM DAY 2018 This year Nick, Johnathan, Lachlan, Jessica, Ramiro and Grace gathered at Brisbane Water Secondary College for the annual Year 5 Peninsula LMG STEM Challenge Day. This year we had to make a weight bearing bridge, the tallest tower and an egg protection device. The Tallest Tower The tower was a challenge to test our architecture skills. We had to build a tower out of 20 uncooked spaghetti sticks, 1 metre of masking tape, 1 metre of string and a marshmallow. There was also a 1 hour time limit. The height was measured from the top of the marshmallow to the base of the tower. Our height actually reached 58cm, which was enough to finish second. By Nick and Johno. The Drop In the competition we had to do an egg drop. In the egg drop we had to protect an egg from a second story drop. All we had to use was a Styrofoam cup, an egg, 1 meter of tape and 10 pieces of paper. We designed a parachute but unfortunately, it did not protect the egg so Bobby Joe JR (our egg’s nickname) cracked open. By Ramiro and Lachlan The Bridge We built a bridge that successfully held 575 grams. It was the strongest bridge they have ever seen in three years. It was built with 10 pieces of A4 paper, 10 paddle pop sticks, and 1 metre of masking tape. We had great fun competing. By Jessica and Grace.

INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS 2019 If you have information you would like the staff to consider when forming classes for 2019, it must be provided to Mrs Percival in writing before Friday 23rd November as next year’s classes are formed after this time. Please do not assume that previous correspondence or verbal requests will be recalled. No information received after this date (including early next year) will be taken into account when forming classes unless there have been exceptional circumstances. Teachers need to make decisions on the basis of the information available and parents are asked to provide that information now. Providing staff with information after classes are formed is too late. Your reasons must be academic or social. For example My child and her cousin play together all the time before and after school and weekends and need to be kept apart at school in the classroom so learning can be the focus and they learn to socialise with other children. Teachers will take on board your information whenever possible and match it with their professional judgement when forming classes however there are many pieces of information to consider along with your information which may mean your wishes cannot always be accommodated. I need to stress that providing information after classes are formed is too late.

At the end of last term, we went to the Reptile Park. First, we stopped at Bulgandry, saw some Aboriginal carvings, and had a walk around. At the Reptile Park, we looked at the alligators and the dingoes and then we saw the cassowaries. Next, we had lunch then we played with the kangaroos. At the show, we patted the koala and it was very soft. Some kids got to hold some snakes and lizards. The snake was very long and smooth. After we got to go inside the giant crocodile mouth to see some turtles. Finally, we went on the bus back to school. Jasmine KC

Our Kindergarten Aboriginal students enjoyed a fun morning participating in a Cultural Continuum excursion at Ettalong Public School on Wednesday 20 September. They joined with other Aboriginal children and parents from schools in the local area to share culture and make new friends. Our students sang, danced, listened to stories, made craft and traditional paintings. Then they had a delicious morning tea. A great time was had by everyone!

ANTI-BULLYING TIPS Keeping my child safe online Online bullying – or cyberbullying – is engaging in bullying behaviour using technology such as the internet or mobile devices. Online bullying is different from other forms of bullying: It is more likely to happen outside school. Harmful material can be shared quickly and long after the first incident. It can happen anytime, day or night. It is more difficult for children to defend themselves or get away. What does online bullying look like? Online bullying might include: sending abusive text messages and emails posting hurtful or threatening material on social media like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and

Snapchat, or on gaming sites imitating or excluding others online inappropriate comments on pictures of others threatening another person to do something such as sending revealing images. How do I keep my child safe? There are a number of key ways to keep your child safe online. Remind your child to tell a trusted adult if they are bullied online. Tell your child not to share their passwords with others. Remind your child to only give their mobile number or personal information to trusted friends. Talk with your child and understand the ways in which they are using the internet and their mobile

phone. Find out the age restrictions for the sites and applications your child wants to use. Depending on the age of your child, set up your own accounts and ‘friend’ your child. By doing

this, you can understand how the site’s privacy settings work, see what your child posts online and how your child responds to posts made by others.

Make sure that your child’s account settings are set to ‘private’ to control who sees their information.

Know how to block unwanted users. Encourage your child to only be friends online with people they know in day-to-day life. Remind your child to think carefully before they post comments, or upload or send images online.

Confidence means…being independent. Worry is an emotion that can cause you to lose confidence. If you are extremely worried, you do not perform as well because your level of self-confidence goes down. Sometimes we worry a lot because we are afraid of what people think of us. Some young people can have such big worries about what their classmates think of them so they protect themselves by not speaking up. Being independent means knowing it’s important to try new activities and to speak up, even if classmates think they’re silly or stupid.

Roster to come
