Save one life “DIsease aND DIsasteRs cOme aND gO LIKe RaIN, but heaLth Is LIKe the suN that ILLumINates the eNtIRe VILLage.” - KeNyaN PROVeRb

Save One Life is a nonprofit international organization that offers individuals, families, companies and organizations the opportunity to sponsor a child or adult with a bleeding disorder in a developing country. unlike many other programs where funds are pooled, Save One Life beneficiaries receive money directly from their sponsors, with only a small percentage given to the national or local organization that registers and cares for them. In May 2016, Save One Life sent over $170,000 to 1,200 beneficiaries registered with 41 program partners.

HASDC proudly sponsors Zakayo, and adult in Kenya who is living with a bleeding disorder. Laurie Kelley, President and Founder of Save One Life recently visited Africa and sent us this report.

“I’m back in Africa where, contrary to popular belief, it is not scorching hot but cool and pleasant, lush and green. It’s winter here, and the mornings are moist and overcast, later clearing to blue skies and mild temperatures. I’m in Kenya, visiting the children and young men who participate in Save One Life. We work through our in-country program partner, the Jose Memorial Haemophilia Society, established ten years ago by Maureen Miruka, mother of a child with hemophilia. They’ve been fantastic to work with! In just over just two days we visited six families around Nairobi and the neighboring town of Murang’a.”

lively Summer at uc San Diego HealtHThe Hemophilia and Thrombosis Treatment Center (HTTC) at uC San Diego Health had an exciting summer filled with adventurous activities for our patients. Being physically active has been shown to be a vital component in hemophilia care by decreasing the joints’ vulnerability to bleeding episodes, improving cardiovascular health, increasing general fitness, and enhancing overall quality of life. In July, uC San Diego Health hosted a one-day kayaking adventure in Coronado. We also hosted our first SPIN class, where participants rode static bikes working towards enhancing their endurance, muscle strength, and overall fitness.

In August the HTTC team began hosting a weekly Aquatics Fitness Class, one hour in length and held at the Canyonview Pool on the uCSD campus. During the aquatics class participants enjoy a wide variety of exercises, which work

joint range of motion, muscle strength, and stability, while decreasing stress on the joints. Please contact the center for more information on the Aquatics Fitness Class.

On September 28th our Rock Climbing Program will begin again. The indoor rock climbing classes will go on for 12 weeks at the Mesa Rim in Sorrento Mesa. Participants will not only work on improving their climbing skills, but also enhance joint range of motion, muscle strength, balance, and general fitness in a safe and very fun environment. Please contact the center for more information on the Rock Climbing Program.

2016 marked the 15th year of the California Coastal Ride for hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and other bleeding disorders. The California Coastal Ride is a fundraising fitness challenge benefiting the four California hemophilia chapters and the Hemophilia Council of California (HCC). Participants cycle over 500 miles from San Francisco to San Diego to raise awareness and funds for the bleeding disorders community.

The 2016 team, including 18 dedicated cyclists and more than 20 support and gear (SAG) volunteers, began their 7-day adventure on August 14th. Riders cycled 60 to 100 miles each day; nightly accommodations, meals, snacks and beverages were provided. The team traveled down the beautiful coast of California, with stops including Big Sur, San Simeon and Santa Barbara. Riders tested themselves mentally and physically, gained an immense sense of accomplishment, and advocated for individuals with bleeding disorders.

For more information on becoming a sponsor, volunteer or rider for the 2017 fundraising event, please see the HCC website at www.hemophiliaca.org or contact HASDC.

rEcorrido ciclista por las costas dE california

2016 Hasdc ridEr – His story

Lisa Heffernan, Directora de Programmas y Eventos

Giovanny Pernudi

“So, four years ago I got my right ankle fused. At that time I felt as though that was it for me, and that I would not be able to do anything remotely athletic for the rest of my life. Completing the Coastal Ride this year is my biggest hemophilia accomplishment to date. It just proves that hemophilia isn’t necessarily a hindrance to living a full and active life. The encouragement I received from the volunteers and the riders was awesome, and I hope to be able to continue this ride in future years.”

Back to school time can be a hectic time for both you and your children These are some of the best back to school tips to help ensure this school year gets off to a great start!

1. Visit the school Walk or ride the route your child will take and make note of school patrols, crossing guards and high traffic areas along the way. Talk to your kids about NOT talking to strangers and find out what, if any, policies your child’s school has regarding early arrivals or late pick-ups. Learn about the school’s entrance and exit policies. Then, if you can, pop in and check out what the inside of the school looks like.

2. Introduce yourself to your child’s teacherIntroduce yourself to your child’s teacher and ask him or her about the preferred method of communication. (Some teachers are active on email and social media, while others prefer the phone or in-person meetings.)

3. make homework a PriorityMake homework time a daily habit. Find a quiet and consistent place at home where your child can complete his or her homework. If your child is having difficulty with his or her homework, make an appointment with the teacher sooner rather than later.

4. set up a study areaSet up a special place at home to do school work and homework. Remove distractions. Make it clear that education is a top priority in your family: show interest and praise your child’s work.

5. take charge of tV and electronics timeLimit the time that you let your child watch TV or play on electronic devices. When you do decide to do TV time, make it a family affair. Talk together about what you see and ask questions after the show ends.

6. get everyone to bed On timeDuring the summer, children aren’t always on a schedule, which is understandable. But, proper rest is essential for a healthy and productive school year. Help your kids get back on track sleep-wise by having them go to bed earlier and wake up earlier at least a week in advance of when school actually starts. (The National Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hours of sleep for children ages 6-13, and 8-10 hours of sleep for teens ages 14-17.)

7. make healthy mealsLet’s face it – no one can concentrate when they’re hungry. Studies show that children who eat healthy, balanced breakfasts and lunches do better in school. Fix nutritious meals at home, and, if you need extra help, find out if your family qualifies for any child nutrition programs, like the National School Lunch Program.

8. get a check upIt’s a good idea to take your child in for a physical and an eye exam before school starts. Most schools require up-to-date immunizations, and you may be asked to provide paperwork showing that your child has all the necessary shots and vaccines. So, check your state’s immunization requirements. And, always keep your own copies of any medical records.

9. Read with your child every NightMake a plan to read with your child for 20 minutes every day. Your example reinforces the importance of literacy, and reading lets you and your child explore new worlds of fun and adventure together.
