Waddell Taiko Club Performs at PBS Charlotte Studio! By Adrianne Brown Johnson
The Waddell Taiko Club was proud to perform Thursday night at the PBS Charlotte WTVI studio. This special event marked the beginning of a partnership between PBS Charlotte and NHK World TV, the English language TV channel for Japan's NHK Broad-casting. PBS Charlotte will now join New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle as one of the NHK World TV partners in distributing the NHK programs on Japanese lifestyle and current event news. This is a great honor for Charlotte and a great opportunity for Waddell to be a part of this celebration. Jayna McKinney, 8th grade, intro-duced the Waddell Taiko Club in both Japanese and English. The students performed two pieces and did an amazing job. Thank you to Hamrick Sensei, Ayd Sensei and Abe Sensei for your leadership of this group!

Representatives from Jissen Women’s University in Tokyo visit Waddell By Christina Hutchinson
This week, we met with Japanese delegates from Jissen Women's University in Tokyo (Dr. Nakayama, Prof. Yamau-chi and Mrs. Ishizuka), with a goal of creating a long term partnership with them for our Academic Volunteer pro-gram. When they arrived at Waddell they were greeted by our Japanese student ambassadors with gifts and name tags. We began with introductions and a conversation with Elyse Dashew (CMS at large school board member)and Mara Cobe (world language specialist, CMS). The delegates then were able to observe almost all of our Japanese classrooms in action and speak with the teach-ers during their lunch breaks. They ended their day meeting and talking with our current Academic Volunteers and having lunch with The Japanese Ambassadors(me and Tricia Devine-Freeman), our host family coordinators (Catherine Wheeler McClain and Holly Holmes Blackstock) and our former PTSO president(Adrianne Brown John-son). Dr Eybl and Herr Nuss were a huge part of the morning as well and did a wonderful job showcasing our school. I am so grateful for this experience and the chance to help make our program even stronger than it already is. Jissen Women's University plans to send their first AV's to us this school year in 2017!! So it was a very successful visit!!

Be a Secret Pal!! The time of year for me to shamelessly beg for volunteers for Secret Pals has come again! For those of you not familiar with the Secret Pal program, it is an opportunity for us to bring a little sunshine to the staff (teachers, office, cafeteria, after school, custodians, etc) who make such an impact on our children's learning.
Staff members wishing to participate fill out a one-page survey with information about themselves. If you kindly reply yes to having a pal, I will forward one of these forms to you and you will then have a secret pal to leave small gifts to throughout the school year. I try my best to match up preferences for language, grade level, etc (but no promises....). The staff are to return the forms to me by 9/9 and I will send out the “assignments” after I scan them all in.
The gifts need not be extravagant or expensive. Past gifts have been cards of appreciation, candy, plants, lotions, soaps, bookmarks, small gift cards, home-baked treats, books, etc. It is entirely up to the parent how often a gift is left; be it once a week, once a month, or once a quarter. We do ask that you leave a gift at least once a quarter though. Some parents leave little gifts throughout the quarter and some parents leave one "larger" gift each quarter. It is entirely up to the gift giver!
Each staff member has a mailbox located in the office. You can also get rather creative with sending in gifts with other stu-dents to give to your pal or the majority of teachers at the school love to be involved in sneak-ing the gifts to other pals too! The office staff is always more than happy to deliver the gift to the mailbox, as long as your pal’s name is clearly labeled on the gift.
Please contact me directly at [email protected] if you would like to bring happiness to the hard-working staff at Waddell and become a Secret Pal! Thanks in advance!
Sponsors Needed for 2016 Waddell Fun Run! Sponsoring the Fun Run is a great way to get exposure for your business and help our school! Money from sponsors will be used to pur-chase 1600 t-shirts for every student and staff member. In addition, the funds will be used for teacher appreciation and incentives sur-rounding the Fun Run. Sponsors will be thanked repeatedly and visibly throughout the weeks surrounding the Fun Run. The business name will appear on 1600 t-shirts, race day banners and on an insert in to the Boosterthon student booklets. For a $500.00 donation, a sponsor will be thanked in one font size, and at $1000.00 the font size will be larger. The Fun Run is such an important part of raising money for everything the PTSO does to help the school's classrooms and programs. Please consider helping the school while promoting your business. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Shelly Thurman at [email protected].

New and returning parents - we are happy to announce that Waddell is contin-
uing to participate in the Crayola ColorCycle program. This is a wonderful pro-
gram where schools can send in their old markers to be recycled into new
products. Teachers will have collection boxes in the workrooms where they
can drop off old markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters. Parents can
send in their old markers as well by placing them in a bag or envelope labeled
"ColorCycle Donation". Get your kids involved in this eco-friendly pro-
gram! Have them “test” their markers and send in the old ones to keep them
out of the landfill.
If anyone has any questions, please contact Amelia Beonde at [email protected] or Heather Hensley at [email protected]. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info.
Do you want to learn more about hosting a Waddell Academic Volunteer (AV)?
Waddell hosts international AVs each year who volunteer in our 2-5the grade classes. Last
year we welcomed 29 AVs who volunteered in our German, French, and Japanese clas-ses. This school year we anticipate there will be over 30 AVs representing all 4 elementary language tracks. These AVs add a tremendous amount of support to the classrooms so we
love seeing the program grow! Unlike interns, our AVs do not receive financial contributions for their efforts and so providing a family to host them is part of our commitment to their volunteer efforts. The Waddell AV program can only grow if we continue to have host fami-
lies willing to assist. If you are interested in learning more about our AV program, or have questions about what is involved in being a host family please join us in the Auditorium on Thursday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m.,following the Elementary School Curriculum
Night. Hosting opportunities can run from 2 weeks to the entire school year so there is an opportunity for every family. In addition, Weekend Host families are needed when long-term host families have other commitments and are a great way to 'get your feet wet'.

Parents/ Room Moms and Dads—we need your pictures!
We need your help in order to include as many pictures of your child(ren) as possible in the yearbook this year! Share your awesome photos through a free APP for smartphones called Replayit by Jostens. By simply downloading the free APP to your smartphones or tablet, you can begin sharing saved photos in your gallery or up-load new pictures as soon as you take them! It is so easy.
Download the app, search for Waddell Language Academy, connect with your Face-book log-in or set up an account and the photos uploaded will then flow directly to year-book staff for consideration. If you would prefer to upload a large number of photos all at once, you can also go to www.replayit.com from a computer. Be sure to tag the photos by room, grade and as much information as possible. Please help us make the most inclusive yearbook yet! All pictures uploaded will become part of a digital time capsule of this school year, archived for the next 10 years. Thanks so much for your help in capturing your students year!
Thanks! - Ms. Reese
Effective, Monday September 19th:
Volunteer Procedures – Waddell Language Academy
Parents who volunteer are a valuable asset to the success of our school. In order to facilitate volunteering and to ensure a fair
and efficient end to the school day, the following procedures have been established for the end of the day for volunteers to
pick up their own children following their volunteer time.
1. Parents who will be volunteering will send an email to [email protected] no later than
1:00 p.m. indicating the volunteer duty with date and time. Parents must include their child’s name and homeroom teacher.
The office will create a pass for the volunteer’s child to go to the cafeteria for carpool to sit at the volunteer table.
a. Parents do not send this information to classroom teachers
b. Parents are not eligible to have their child use the “Volunteer” table if the email is not received by the cutoff time. In this
case, the child must ride the bus or wait at carpool to be picked up @ 3:45 when car riders come to the office.
2. When parents sign in to volunteer they will see Tracee Mann to receive a volunteer pass. This pass will allow parents to
pick up their child at the “Volunteer” table in the cafeteria and students will receive the transportation change from the office.
3. Teachers will send students whose parents are volunteering to carpool during carpool dismissal and those students will sit
at the “Volunteer” table. Parents may pick their child up from the volunteer table in the cafeteria AFTER students have arrived
in the cafeteria and have been seated for carpool. Students may not be taken from the classroom or out of the line from the
hallway.
4. Parents will sign students out on the clipboard on the “Volunteer” table in the cafeteria and turn in the volunteer pass. Par-ents may not pick up other students, who are not their own, unless written permission has been submitted to the office prior to dismissal.

Enroll your child in the ONE Access Program today! Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to support
students' ongoing education. We are working together to ensure that every CMS student will
have access to books and resources found at their public library. CMS students are now able to
use the CMS student ID number to access and check out public library resources. This exciting
initiative is called ONE Access because the CMS student ID number is all that a student needs.
Important things to know:
Students can borrow e-resources and access library databases
Students can borrow up to 10 print or audio books
There are NO overdue fines for ONE Access accounts (users are responsible for lost book fees) Superintendent Ann Clark is asking that 100% of our students log in to the Charlotte Public Li-
brary using ONE Access and their student ID number. Could you please help your child log into
his/her account at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as soon as possible? This will give you and
your child the chance to see all the wonderful educational resources that can be accessed using
just your child's student ID number. The steps are outlined below.

Counselor’s Corner Some high schools are already planning their Open House dates for 2016-2017. As these come available, Mrs. Reece, the 8th grade Counselor will post the dates here in the Waddell RamPage. You may also check the web-site of other high schools. One of CMS’s newest magnet schools, Hawthorne Academy of Health Science, will be visiting Waddell 8th grad-ers during lunch on Tuesday, October 4th. Mr. Joe Payne, the school’s Counselor will be on hand to answer questions and provide helpful information about HAHS. Did you know that Hawthorne Academy of Health Scienc-es is a National Academy Foundation affiliated academy that prepares students for college and careers in the field of health sciences?
The pathways offered at HAHS include: nursing and general medicine, emergency medicine, and pharmacy stud-ies. Several certificates are available to qualified upperclassmen: Nurse Aide I, EMT-B, and Pharmacy Techni-cian. Additional enrichment is offered to students within the work-based learning continuum and is a highlight of our program: career fairs, guest speakers, job skills workshops, site visits, job shadows, internships, dedicated mentorships, and enriching volunteer experiences.
Several former Waddell Language Academy students now attend HAHS and love it! Encourage your 8th grade student to stop by the display in the cafeteria on October 4th or contact Mrs. Reece, Middle School Counselor, for more information. [email protected]
