MathCounts is Starting Soon!
MathCounts is a national mathematics program for middle school students. It is not tutoring or homework time, but it is an opportunity to practice math. We will be solving complex and chal-lenging word problems in a relaxed setting. Students will be learning new concepts and applying the math we know to new situations. Please pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Bartholomew if you are interested (room 217). We will be starting on November 21st. The club meets from 3:35-4:30. You can start later in the school year if you can not start immediately. Please email all questions to [email protected]

Help out our Music Teachers on Donorschoose.org—Donate today!
Music Education is a vital part of a child’s school experience and your donation will be used for years
to come. Ms. Maillet’s class works very hard learning to read music and applying it to the recorders,
Orff instruments and ukuleles. With alto recorders her students can expand their musical knowledge
by keeping the challenge going of note reading and learning new fingerings. Due to budget cuts ,Ms.
Maillet is unable to purchase these more challenging instruments for her students. With the higher
level instruments she will still be able to push her students to achieve the very best
they can. CLICK HERE to donate today. .
Ms. Lutjen’s Donorschoose project is to help fund new drum sets from around
the world for the class she teaches. Click here to donate today.

International Education Week—November 17—21
It’s International Education Week and we are ready to have fun learning about the other languages and cultures represented here at Waddell!
Each language has its own day! Greet all staff and teach-ers with the day’s greeting and you may be surprised with stickers and other goodies!
Students may choose to dress in the colors of the flag for
that day or in traditional folk attire from countries where
the language of the day is spoken. So break out your trajes de faraleas, qipao, lederhosen, kimonos,
and berets and let’s get into the spirit of International Week! Please note: if you choose to dress in the
colors of the flag you may dress in solid colors only- no patterns, plaids, etc. Students not dressed in
traditional folk attire or flag colors are expected to wear their school uniform.

Parents—we need your help to make International Week a success for
our staff!
Our parents participate that week by bringing in treats and sweets for our teachers. What will you bring to share with our teachers? How about bringing something sweet, something delicious, and something baked from your kitchen? Sign up on one of the days to bring in a delicious snack for our Waddell teachers and staff to enjoy. You can sign up any day you would like or stick with your lan-guage! It takes a village to feed our staff, and Waddell has an amazing global village!

Important Fun Run Update!
Parents - please continue to send in your Fun Run pledge money! The final day for the students to be en-
tered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire is tomorrow, Nov. 14th. All students who have 100% of their pledges
turned in by this day will have their names entered in once for the drawing.
At this time, we still have about $18,000 in uncollected pledges. Please, please - send these in! Through
the Fun Run, over 2,700 sponsors have pledged their support to Waddell. They have made a promise to give
and are willing to help our school. Allow them to fulfill their promise by continuing through to the end with
the collection process. Your efforts will be well worth it as we reach our Fun Run goal and have the money
we need to support our teachers, classrooms and many extra-curricular and cultural activities.
Teachers will be sending out updated student ledgers to all those who have uncollected pledges. If you have
any questions about your student's pledges, please send an email to [email protected]. Thank you for
your support of our school!!
Calling all Waddell Shutterbugs! We need your pic-
tures for the Waddell Yearbook.
Parents/Room Moms – we need your help in order to include as many pictures of your child(ren) as possible
in the yearbook this year! Share your awesome photos through a free APP for smartphones called Replayit
by Jostens. By simply downloading the free APP to your smartphones or tablet, you can begin sharing saved
photos in your gallery or upload new pictures as soon as you take them! It is so easy. Download the app,
search for Waddell Language Academy, connect with your Facebook log-in or set up account and the photos
uploaded will then flow directly to yearbook staff for consideration. And, if you would prefer to upload a
large number of photos all at once, you can also go to www.replayit.com from a computer. Be sure to tag
the photos by room, grade and as much information as possible. Please help us make the most inclusive
yearbook yet! All pictures uploaded will become part of a digital time capsule of this school year, archived for
the next 10 years. Thanks so much for your help in capturing your students year!
Waddell Hosts Lunch with Delegates from Lille,
France
Wednesday, Nov. 12th Waddell hosted 8 delegates (teachers, administrators) from
Lille, France. They observed classes, met and spoke with our French teachers and
toured the school discussing our successful immersion model with Herr Nuss & Principal Olshausen. Helga
Fasciano, Section Chief at NC Department of Public Instruction, Brian Schult, CMS Chief Academic Officer,
and Mara Cobe, CMS World Language Specialist joined the tour and discussions as well. The PTSA and
French Ambassadors provided lunch for the delegates. Several parents met and shared a parent's perspective
on our school. We hope that this visit is the start to many future French connections!
We need your help as we continue to expand our intern program. The 2013-14 School year marked the es-
tablishment of an exciting relationship with the University of Burgundy and the arrival of our first French in-
terns. In order for the program to grow and thrive - the University hopes to send EIGHT interns this spring -
we need more families willing to host. We hope you will consider opening your home for a few weeks for
one of these interns. Please contact Holly Blackstock (704.277.6196) or e-mail [email protected] to
learn more about becoming a host family.
