We surveyed 15 students and 10 teachers to gather more informaon about student stress. Among the students we surveyed, the average amount of stress with school work was a level 6 on a range from 1-10. Elementary teachers give about 1 or two pages of homework daily. In Frau Malaves fourth grade stu- dents are allowed to do their homework in class. In fiſth grade there appears to be a lot more homework and class work than in kindergarten - fourth grades. Most middle school teachers report that they dont give homework unless its unfinished work or the students need more pracce in that subject. Math homework is assigned daily in middle school. The Rampage Student Stress A problem/solution text by: Byron Black Blackstock (5th grade German) Carly McLean-Voltz (5th grade German) Sebastian Dominguez (5th grade Japanese)

Is your child stressed about school work? We surveyed 15 students and 10 teachers to gather more information about student stress. Among the students we surveyed, the average amount of stress with school work was a level 6 on a range from 1-10. Elementary teachers give about 1 or two pages of homework daily. In Frau Malave’s fourth grade stu-dents are allowed to do their homework in class. In fifth grade there appears to be a lot more homework and class work than in kindergarten - fourth grades. Most middle school teachers report that they don’t give homework unless it’s unfinished work or the students need more practice in that subject. Math homework is assigned daily in middle school. Students also reported that tests create the most stress.

So, what can you do to help?

• Provide verbal encouragement. Encourage your child by talking to them. Tell them not to rush it and to do their best. Try not to stress out when you kid gets one bad grade. Use poor test grades to pro-mote a growth mindset.

• Plan consistent homework times. Give them schedule sheets to post in rooms and on refrigerators.

Remind them when it is time to begin homework. • Limit electronic time until homework is complete. Social media and video games distract kids. • Give them some free time halfway through. This way kids have something to look forward to and

don’t get too stressed.

Carpool and Bus Procedures Text Structure: Compare and Contrast By: Hayley McAllister (5th grade Chinese) Sophia Aliotta (5th grade Chinese) Grant Beverley (5th grade Chinese)

Does your child ride the bus to get to school in the morning? Do you pick your child up from the carpool line in the after-

noon? Do you ever wonder what students and staff do to prepare for these procedures? We recently went to interview

and emailed the people who set up these procedures to tell you.

To pick up your child from the carpool line in the afternoon, you need your tag. Your tag tells the staff at the carpool line

that you have permission to pick up your child. If you don’t have your tag, you have to go to the front of the building to pick

up your child.

In the morning, when you go through the carpool line, you are going in a snake until you get to the front. Once you are in

the unloading zone, your child should exit the vehicle carefully and enter the building.

In the afternoon, you enter through the Nations Ford Elementary entrance and you will be next to another car. Once you

get to the staff calling numbers, you will split up. You will snake around until you get to the front where your child will be

waiting to be picked up. For more information, watch the video at the link below.

No tag, no kid. - Ms. Perez - Head of carpool procedure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdZO7X-u2ik

During the bus procedure, the assigned staff will go outside to the bus lot to see which busses are there. There are never all

of the busses present at 3:15, so they usually wait for a bit. Most bus parents know that they call the busses that are not

present before the children go to the bus lot. Did you know, they used to call the busses that were there, until one day, all

but two busses were there. Mr. Guzeh called the base and said, “All but two busses are present.” So, they decided, why

don’t we just call the busses that are not there? In the afternoon, to signal the busses to leave, a saff will signal the first

bus, and all the other busses will follow. The new bus app, “Here comes the bus”, is for telling parents where the bus is and

alerting you when it enters your zone.

Carpool and bus procedure are generally run the same way. The main goal of both procedures is to get kids to school and

home quickly as safely. Both procedures require many staff members. Student and parent cooperation make both proce-

dures run smoothly.

The Wonders of P.E. A Descriptive Text By: Danica Taylor (5th grade Chinese) Thomas Ginos (5th grade Chinese)

Physical Education (PE) is a popular special at Waddell. We talked to Coach Acker

and found out that the most liked sport is matball. At EE Waddell, coach Acker is

one of the PE teachers. He teaches elementary and middle school.

We asked Coach Acker about his favorite game in PE. Here is what he had to say:

“Capture the Flag is probably my favorite game that we play in PE because it keeps

everyone engaged. Everyone has an important role in the success of the team. “

We also asked him about the equipment used in PE. He said,

“We have many items in storage, too numerous to list here. We have a variety of balls, hoops, jump ropes,

cones, pinnies, bats, hockey equipment.”

If you love P.E. like us, then you should ask your kids these questions and maybe you could spend time playing some of

the games with them. At school during our PE special, we play games all the time. We first stretch, then, we run 1-3 laps

in the gym. After that, we get to play the game. PE is a great way to get some exercise and learn!

Waddell All School International Cookbook

PTSO is excited to announce the first ever Waddell all-school International Cookbook. We

are asking teachers, staff and parents to submit recipes that are your family favorites. Our

Waddell community would love to experience a dish that has been a part of your family for

years, or even generations! We believe this cookbook will reflect the international and di-

verse community that is Waddell. We extend our appreciation in advance to all contribu-

tors.

Instructions to contribute a recipe:

1. A release form must be signed by all cookbook contributors. This is for recipes as well as any photos that you

may wish to send in of the food. The release form (PDF) is attached here.

2. Paper form submission - included with the release form is a place to write the recipe information. This form can

be emailed back to the Cookbook coordinator or it can be sent in through your child’s teacher. If you wish to

send in your recipe on a separate document attachment, that is fine as well. A paper form will be sent home to

all students at the end of this week.

3. Online submission - If you wish to submit your recipe online, please go to the following google doc link:

https://goo.gl/forms/iKUwfy2ikkYiULdT2

If you submit your recipe online, please do NOT forget to turn in the printed release form, which can be found

here. Without this form, your recipe cannot be included in the cookbook.

Please be sure to include any details that you think are relevant to making this recipe a success for another potential

cook. Any history that you can include or ways that your family has enjoyed this particular meal are always wel-

come. We will aim to organize the recipes based on country of origin of the dish. The cookbook will be a PTSO fund-

raiser that we hope will be ready for purchase in early spring.

If you have any questions, please contact Lesley Haydon at [email protected]

FROM THE OFFICE

Tardy Bell After the tardy bell, CMS policy requires all students be escorted into the building and signed in by a parent or guardian. All students arriving after 8:14 a.m. are required to have a tardy slip to enter the classroom and these can only be obtained after they are signed in. Waddell recently had a routine safety/lockdown drill that was conducted during morning arrival. This policy is im-portant because children dropped off after the tardy bell and during a lock down would be left outside the building with no supervision until the drill is over! It is imperative that parents see students safely inside the building after the carpool drop off ends and the 8:14 a.m. tardy bell rings.

Picky Eater Do you have a picky eater at home? You are not alone! It's easy to become frustrated when your child refuses to eat food so lovingly prepared for them. Don't be discouraged! Experts advise NOT TO LABEL your child a PICKY EATER. Doing so may result in them labeling themselves PICKY and form a BELIEF that it is who they are. Avoid talking about their picky eating when they are within hearing dis-tance. Encourage them to try new things, but don’t make a big deal about it if they don’t like it or if they refuse. It can take time for their palates to develop. Most importantly, model good eating habits for your children, and con-tinue to serve a variety of healthy foods.

SLT Meeting January 29th—Dr. Wilcox Visit for updates on replacement facility There will be an SLT meeting January 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ynez Olshausen Media Center. Dr. Wilcox is planning to attend and provide an update on the replacement facility following the passage of the CMS Bond package in No-vember.

Copy Center Volunteers Needed If you are trained to volunteer in the Copy Center, please consider coming in to do some copying. We only have one steady volunteer for general Copy Center copying! (Thanks so much, Mrs. King!) She cannot do it all, though (she is usually there only on Tuesdays), so please consider being generous with your time and helping all those teachers who need our assistance. Thank you very much!
