May is Better Hearing & Speech Month!
Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the professionals working in this career field. Patricia Wasco, the speech-language pathologist at Waddell, celebrates this month and her profession. She is sharing some information
aboutspeech/language development in bilingual children. With U.S. Census Bureau data indicating that at least 350 languages are being spoken across American homes—and nearly 10% of school-age children na-tionwide who are classified as English Language Learners (ELLs)—bilingual children are far from rare in the United States. However, misconceptions about speaking two languages are common—to the potential detriment of these dual language learners. “While bilingual children starting school may face initial challenges if they don’t speak English, it is important for parents to understand that being bilin-gual does not cause delays in a child’s speech/language development,” said (Patricia Wasco, Speech Language Pathologist at Waddell). “Some special treatment considerations are involved when bilingual children have speech/language disorders. However, parents should know that the disorders are not caused by being exposed to two languages. In fact, being bilingual provides children with many long-term advantages—educational and otherwise.” Young children who are exposed to two languages have the same speech/language development trajectory as those who are exposed to one language. As with other children, most bilingual children will speak their first word by age 1 (such as “mama” or “dada”) and will use two-word phrases by age 2 (such as “my ball” or “more juice”). Some bilingual children may mix gram-mar rules from time to time; or, they might use words from both languages in the same sentence. This is a normal part of bilingual language development and does not mean that a child is confused. EOG Proctors Needed Parents, guardians, friends of Waddell. It’s that time of year again to consider volunteering at Waddell as a proc-tor for the EOGs (End of Grade assessments). Due to the nature of our school, we have a large need for volun-teers to support us during the assessment window which is May 22 – June 6.
We NEED PROCTORS for (5) days of EOG Testing on May 24, 25, 26 & 30 plus June 2.
All Proctors are needed from 7:45 am - 11:30 am. Proctor Training will be held each morning at7:45 in the Media Center. You only need to be trained ONCE.

Help Needed! Waddell Student in crisis.
Anthony Moncada 7th grade student is currently suffering from a severe health crises. He is being treated
in Boston. An article about his situation was published in the Spanish newspaper, “Progresso Hispano
News” page 17 for May 9, 2017 edition. A bank account has been established for donations from the com-
munity to assist the family with the expenses. The information is as follows:

Smart Watches…aka GIZMOS
Dear Parents,
Please encourage your child to leave their SMART watches at home. Per CMS Code of Student Conduct Rule 5 A: Personal
Technology Devices are to remain off and put away during school hours and while on the bus. Additionally, “Possession of a
PTD by a student is a privilege, which may be revoked for violations of the Code of Student Conduct. Violations may result in
the confiscation of the PTD (to be returned only to a parent) and/or other disciplinary actions. The district is not responsible
(monetary value or replacement) for theft, loss, or damage to PTDs or other electronic devices brought onto CMS property”.
Finally, such items are prohibited in the classroom during State Testing. Our EOG dates are May24th- June 9th.

What’s going on at Waddell?
Incoming Superintendent Clayton Wilcox really enjoyed his tour of Waddell. He was able to observe classrooms for all four lan-
guages and was thoroughly impressed with students and teachers alike. Dr. Wilcox’squestions and comments about Waddell un-
derscored his desire to see language immersion “preserved and expanded” in keeping with the school board’s vision. Thelma Byers
Bailey joined the tour from the school board as well.

Waddell Band selling $20 AutoBell gift cards! The Waddell Band is selling $20 AutoBell® Gift Cards as an end-of-year fundraiser. This would make a wonderful final gift for your child's teacher (or just for you!). AutoBell® offers a variety of services. A favor-ite of many is the $4.00 Ride-Thru Exterior Wash and the $16.99 Full Service Car Wash (exterior wash plus wheels, vacuuming, wipe down of interior, hand dry). There are many, many other options for using the gift card too! Purchasing a $20 gift card benefits the amazing band at our school, as the band gets to keep half of the money! As we head into summer, and start clearing out old school supplies, we would like to announce that our school is now partnering with The Crayon Initiative to send used crayons to be recycled. http://thecrayoninitiative.org/about/ THE CAUSE: The Crayon Initiative
More than a half-million pounds of broken crayons are discarded every year, turning into a waxy sludge that clogs our
landfills and never biodegrades. The Crayon Initiative (TCI) collects used crayons from restaurants, schools and homes across the
country, then melts them down and remanufactures them. The recycled crayons are then distributed to children’s hospitals across
the U.S. helping young patients to alleviate anxiety during their hospitalization by providing a creative outlet for self-expression.
Collection boxes have been set up in the teacher workrooms to drop off old crayons. Parents can send in your own old
crayons by placing them in a bag marked "Crayon Initiative Donation".

A Note from the office... Early dismissal ends at 1:45 pm.
Transportation Changes should be submitted by 1:00 pm each day!
All Transportation Changes need to include:
· Student's first and last name
· Student's teacher/homeroom teacher
· Bus number (if student will be a bus rider)
· Car pool number (if the student will be car pool).
Please: If the student is a bus rider, do not include the carpool number. If the student is a car rider, do not include the bus number.
Infrequent changes: To make a change to your child's method of transportation (i.e., bus rider needing to picked up by car) send the change to the Front Office either via email, or in writing with your stu-dent. All transportation requests must be sent in by 1:00 pm on the day of the change.
Routine changes: If you have transportation changes on a routine basis, a note must be sent EVERY time the change occurs. For example, your bus-riding child is a car rider every Friday, so a note must be sent every Friday by 1:00pm.
Busing changes: For long term changes to bus routes, please refer to CMS Transportation page. www.cms.k12.nc.us(departments – transportation – alternate stop request link)
Carpool: Parents who wish to use carpool are required to purchase a plastic hang-tag. The price is $2 (online) or $3.00 (in the office), for two tags per carpool number.
Student Items: If you drop off an item for your student we will email the teacher to notify them the folder, instru-ment, lunch, project, etc. is in the front office. We will no longer call into the classrooms to ask the student to come pick up the item.
Please note: Parents, please do not send Glass Water Bottles to school with your child. This is a serious safety hazard!

New and returning parents - we are happy to announce that Waddell is contin-
uing to participate in the Crayola ColorCycle program. This is a wonderful pro-
gram where schools can send in their old markers to be recycled into new
products. Teachers will have collection boxes in the workrooms where they
can drop off old markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters. Parents can
send in their old markers as well by placing them in a bag or envelope labeled
"ColorCycle Donation". Get your kids involved in this eco-friendly pro-
gram! Have them “test” their markers and send in the old ones to keep them
out of the landfill.

Learn more about iGive!
iGive is an EASY way to raise money for the school. They will donate a small percentage of your purchases when
you shop online at various sites. This has the potential to generate some $ over the holidays! You DO HAVE TO IN-
STALL their "button" which will appear on your toolbar. When you go to certain sites a notice will pop up indicating the
percentage of your purchase that will go to the school. You click the notice and that is it! A few have signed up, but
did not install the "button." When you go to the link you'll see that Waddell can get an additional $10 if you join and
shop within 10 days. Please pay attention to the OTHER TERMS listed below. You HAVE to meet these guidelines in
order for the school to receive funds. A few of you have signed up but the school did NOT receive funds since you did
not meet ALL OF the guidelines.

Host Families Needed CIEE is looking for families who would be willing to open their homes and their hearts to International High
School students who will arrive in the area in August. This is a great opportunity to experience a different culture without leaving your home. Hosting a CIEE student can be a very exciting, memorable, and rewarding experience for your family. You will gain a new perspective about your community and the world. Stu-dents are well selected, speak English, have their own spending money and health insurance coverage. You do not have to have a teenager to be able to host. Attn: Kindergarten and First Grade Parents—Enroll your child in the ONE Access Program today! Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to support
students' ongoing education. We are working together to ensure that every CMS student will
have access to books and resources found at their public library. CMS students are now able to
use the CMS student ID number to access and check out public library resources. This exciting
initiative is called ONE Access because the CMS student ID number is all that a student needs.
Important things to know:
• Students can borrow e-resources and access library databases
• Students can borrow up to 10 print or audio books
There are NO overdue fines for ONE Access accounts (users are responsible for lost book fees) Superintendent Ann Clark is asking that 100% of our students log in to the Charlotte Public Li-
brary using ONE Access and their student ID number. Could you please help your child log into
his/her account at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as soon as possible? This will give you and
your child the chance to see all the wonderful educational resources that can be accessed using
just your child's student ID number. The steps are outlined below.
