everyone a few pounds heavier! Great Job Bobbies!! The next success was the St. Patrick’s Day party. Just how much fun can people have with egg roulette? I was told once that raw eggs can make your hair grow. After all the raw eggs on my head I expect great things! I suppose the ‘yolk’ is on me! How about those special Irish dancers? Somethings will burn on your eyes and brain for a long time but the amount of laughter that was heard still echoes in the halls of Antioch! Susan and I just got home from our safari trip in South Africa. There was so much to see and experience, there is no way to put it in this article. We will talk about it often when we are all together. This trip was a result of good luck at the Yaarab Temple (Atlanta) Sportsman’s Raffle. I won this trip last year while we were investigating how they offer their raffle event to the public. Speaking of the Sportsmans Raffle, we are doing very well on ticket sales but we still have tickets available for purchase or to check out for you to sell. Remember, for each ticket sold, one dollar goes back to your club or unit. Get involved!! The April Stated meeting is on April 9th at Antioch and there is a Ladies program as well. Contact Pam Kraska to let her know how many Ladies are coming so First Lady Susan can prepare. Remember the Potentates Ball is April 14th at the Hilton Garden Inn at Austin Landing. We had to also secure rooms at the Staybridge hotel across the driveway from the Hilton. This is from overwhelming response to Nobles and Ladies wishing to stay over night. I hope you have your reservations sent in. Illustrious Sir Ray Combs will be installed as Commander of

the International Shrine Legion of Honor in Kansas City. We all extend congratulations and wish him and Lady Pat great success during his year. Next month will be the start of the parade season. Watch your Crier for details and attend your club and unit meetings for updates. I encourage you to mark your calendar accordingly so you can make these parades a huge success for Antioch. Last but certainly not least—REMEMBER MEMBERSHIP… MEMBERSHIP…MEMBERSHIP! Ask that Master Mason you know that would make a great Shriner to join our Fraternity! We are planning a full ceremonial in November but we also open to performing short forms if needed. Let’s make it needed!! I wish you all well and hope you will take advantage of all Antioch Shrine! If I can be of assistance to you please call me or stop in at Antioch. I am in the office 3-4 times per week for most of the day. Take the time to speak kindly about someone. Find more positives than negatives and smile at strangers as well as friends. At the very least, they will wonder what you are up to!Cheers!

Spring is upon us but you never can quite tell with Ohio’s diverse weather. Difficult weather or not, Antioch continues to provide entertainment and activities for everyone’s delight. The Monte Carlo night that was hosted by the Indy Cars and Four Wheelers was a major success and opened up more possibilities of expanding on the Monte Carlo idea for fund raising. I attended the International Shrine Clown Association Mid Winter competition to support two of our Funsters as they competed. They made Antioch proud by bringing home a number of awards! I am very proud of them. I also presented a $6000 check from AugMer Shrine club to the Sneaker Fund while I was there. The incoming president holds duel membership with Antioch and Za Ga Zig temple in Altoona, Iowa and presented him with a meritorious award for leadership. The Bobbies Fish Fry was another great success and

ANTIOCHSENIORSBy Noble Bruce E. Puff

Spring is here! It’s been so long since the Award-Winning Scat Kitty’s have performed in parades. The Bobbies first practice is scheduled, so the next parade season must be right around the corner. Going to Imperial? This year it is scheduled for July 15th - 19th, and I hope you are all planning to go and are as excited as I am to see the Bobbies have a strong showing again this year. Just a reminder, final payment is due by May 1, 2018 Upcoming Bobbies Practices First Practice is April 29th at Bob Wagner’s house. Bring your Skat Kitty and plan on doing maintenance in preparation for a great year of riding. There will be plenty of helping hands to assist the new Bobbies. Starting in May, practices will be every Sunday at 2pm. Just a note to all interested Bobbies and Babes, Lady Barbara is pulling together information to order matching embroidered polo shirts. Most Award-Winning Unit in Antioch & “THE BEST UNIT IN THE SHRINE”

What was the Make & Model of the Beverly HillBilly’s Jalopy?, on the TV Sitcom. The month of March has come and gone like a lamb, and we missed out on the last few weeks of the snow. So now, we summerize the snow blowers, if there is such a thing, get out the mowers, and start working the gardens. The Bobbies Fish Fry was “Great”, plus the St. Patties Party, also a terrific green time. No April Fools jokin’g round, The Pote’s Ball, “Could it be Magic” is going to be an enchanted evening of good times. Senior’s meet every Tuesday of the month, at Antioch Shrine Center, with a $1 donation for the fat-free doughnuts, coffee and tea. On the second Tuesday of the month. We have a “Great Breakfast”, with a donation of $4, wives & girlfriends are always welcomed. Bring a Masonic Brother and/or a friend. Doors open at 9:30 am. for the intellectual discussions and card playing. The Jalopy, a “1921 Oldsmobile, Model 46 Roadster.

PROVOSTGUARDBy Noble Tom Hail Happy Easter to all Nobles and Ladies of Antioch! Now that April is here hopefully the weather will warm up because the first day of spring was a couple of weeks ago. April also brings us the much anticipated Potentate’s Ball. Our Potentate Ill. Sir Bret and his Lady Susan have promised us “Could it be Magic” on the 14th at the Hilton Garden Center at Austin Landing. With their promise of “magic”, so many couples have signed up to attend, the Hilton has run out of rooms and the hotel next door has taken reservations for the additional guests. This looks to be a great year with many planned activities to keep us Shriners and our Ladies busy having “fun”. Remember the men and women who keep us free by serving our country both here and in foreign lands. Tonight, say a little and prayer that they all return safely home to their loved ones. God bless America

March seemed to have come and left very quickly, but we managed to have a great time at our 1st annual “Fundraising Dinner” on March 23, 2018. Rick did an excellent job, as always, preparing the lasagna dinner for us. We also had a great time with bake sale, 50/50 drawing and the “Italian” themed raffle basket. Thanks to all who came out to help and support us during this event. We are currently still selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a suite at the Dayton Dragon’s Game for Sunday, May 20, 2018. You still have until Monday, April 9, 2018 to purchase your tickets with the winning ticket to be drawn at the Antioch Stated Meeting that evening. Please see any Elissa Lady or Pam at the Antioch office if you wish to purchase tickets. Thanks to everyone for your support of Elissa and have a great month!

CARBy Jim Matthews, Director

Spring is finally here and we hope the snow and bad weather have passed us by until next fall. Our members are starting to get their cars out of winter storage, waxing them up, and making cosmetic changes such as paint touch ups and seat cover replacements. Our first parade this year will be May 30 in Bellefontaine. One of the things discussed at our last meeting was the selling of ads for our Car Show fliers. Our members will be soliciting ads from area businesses as well as other Shrine Units, Masonic bodies, or Lodges. If you know of a business person, have a business, or would personally like to sponsor and ad in our car show brochure, please contact any Classic Car Member. Please keep in mind that the money made from our car show is donated to the Antioch Foundation for various temple improvements and the ad sales are a significant part of the money raised by the car show. Spring car tip: Check your engine air filter, cabin air filter, and cooling system -- Check your belts and hoses -- Know when to change your oil -- Make sure your antifreeze is in good shape.

PHOTOUNITBy Noble Bruce E. Puff March is now long gone, with the sub-zero weather and snow. The rain did not deter the people, Nobles and families from filling up the Main Dining Room for the Cabiri Fish Fry. The Photo Unit got a few great shots of a couple Past Pote’s cooking up the light golden brown fish and then service with a “Smile.” The Monte Carlo had 250, plus, people with a lot of great door prizes. Again, great photos taken of the cards being dealt, and winning hands. The Bobbies Fish Fry was equal to, if not a little better than the one a month before, and the photos taken of the St. Patty’s Party had a green tint. The Pote’s Ball, “Could It Be Magic” will be great to see if we, the Photo Unit, can get that magic onto prints. We meet the 4th Wednesday, of the Month, at Antioch, 7:30 p.m. So, if you can work magic with a camera, look for those smiling faces of our Nobles, join us.

ParadeEscortBy Noble Michael Hayslip, Secretary There has not been a whole lot happening in our unit since the last Crier as we are still getting ready for the parade season. The weather has finally started to turn warmer and the days longer. However, because of the Spring weather you will start to see a lot of motorcycles on the roads again. Please take the time to look twice for bikes! And if you ride, be defensive and never ride beyond your ability. Or as the saying goes, “Don’t ride faster than your guardian angel can fly.”

It’s spring, time to get our equipment ready for our first parade in May at Bellefontaine Ohio. March was a very productive month with the Motor Corps’ new Secretary Noble Dan Lumnah taking over and proposing several positive initiatives for the Motor Corps. Dan’s new format for the monthly news E-mails and updates is a great improvement and have been well received. His take charge attitude has been well received and the establishment of job descriptions and updating the By-laws is long overdue. This is one area of concern that Noble Kelly expressed prior to his passing last fall. Hang in there, Dan, we all in the Motor Corps will support you. In regards to parade season preparation, all Nobles are reminded that proof of insurance is required if you are to parade with a motorized vehicle and once again we want all Nobles in the Corps to complete the required Antioch insurance form. The Motor Corps wallet-size directory has been updated and printed and is available from the Secretary or Noble Pete Boyd. It contains the Parade schedule and dates for other significant events. Get ready!!!!! Let’s have a great parade Season.

What is a Visitation Chaplain and why do we have one? Potentate Ill. Sir Bret Stahler has determined a need for more attention to be made to everyday events at our Shrine and among our Nobles and their families. The member facilitating the needed acts will be titled a Visitation Chaplain. For those among our members fortunate to have been a Shriner for many years, Antioch at one time had hospitalers whose duties will be resumed at this time. The job description will include but will not be limited to the following: Attending Divan meetings and reporting information needing Divan notice. Offering invocations, benedictions and blessings as needed. Visiting all clubs and units, parades and other outside events. Being aware of the individual needs of our members, weddings, funerals, hospitalizations, awards such as lodge pins, etc. Make personal appearances as possible, send cards and make calls as needed. It should be noted the involvement and cooperation of all members will make this assignment a success. Noble Tom Best will be pleased to receive your input.

FROM THEORIENTAL GUIDEBy Noble J. Kendall Lawson

Hello Antioch Nobles and Ladies,

What a great month March was. Lady Jennifer and I attended OG School in Tampa at the beginning of the month. We spent 4 days learn-ing why and how we do things in the Shrine. We went into this with an open-mind and we sure did learn a lot. It was awesome to get to know our Counterparts from around GLSA and beyond. Many of you remember that when I was running for OG that I felt like Antioch was like a huge family. This session showed us that it is much big-ger than that. Antioch has been going through some growing pains lately. We have to move past these and remem-ber that we need each other to suc-ceed. I would really like to get YOUR input on this. We can never lose focus as to why we do these things. The Shriners Hospitals for Children and our kids need us. Family is very important to me. You are all members of my family. We may disagree at times but we need to remember that we are Brothers, and Sisters, of the Greatest Fraternity in the World. We must never lose sight of this. We need to work together to return Antioch to Greatness. Thank you for the opportunity to be your voice. Please never hesitate to tell me what we are doing right as well as what we are doing wrong. I am here for you.

Life Per Capita Member: A noble may pay to his Shrine Center recorder a sum equal to 30 times the current per capita tax. At present it is $900. Hospital Permanent Contributing Membership: A noble may purchase for $150 a Permanent Contributing Membership in the Hospitals, receive a certificate therefor from the Recorder of the Shrine Center and be exempt from further hospital levy. Life Membership in Shrine Center: If you are under 65 the cost is 20 times the current dues. If you are over 65 the cost is 10 times the current dues. The best time to do this is before the next year’s dues are paid. The cost for a Total Life Member is…under 65 $2450, over 65 $1750. You can make partial payments, just give the Recorder a call and we can work out a payment plan. For Shriners Hospitals for Children—Cincinnati, 2018 marks 50 years of pediatric specialty health care. From our origins in burn treatment, Cin-cinnati Shriners Hospital has become a globally-recognized health leader and innovator. Our comprehensive, family-focused approaches to heal-ing and groundbreaking research have changed lives for children across the country and around the world.

In the hospital’s early days, survival was the primary focus after a burn in-jury. As advances in research and medical treatment improved outcomes, focus shifted to the child’s quality of life after wounds healed—a philoso-phy of thriving, not just surviving. This expanded medical proficiency led to Cincinnati Shriners Hospital becoming a destination for pediatric treatment beyond burn care, including cleft lip and palate and other cra-niofacial disorders, specialized wound and skin conditions and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Today, healing at Cincinnati Shriners Hospital encompasses family-cen-tered care, with an emphasis on keeping parents and families close and actively involved in the individual needs of the child throughout treatment and beyond.

It’s been an amazing 50 years and we have many upcoming plans for this year. Stay tuned to our website and social media pages and mark your calendar for Divan Days, August 24 & 25.

News from Cincinnati

To kick off the year’s festivities, staff unveiled a large “50” to be displayed

in the hospital’s atrium.

At Shriners Hospital for Children Medical Center-Lexington, research matters. Not only is it a part of our mission to conduct research that will improve the quality of care and the quality of life of children and families, but it is central to our vision. Since the beginning of our research program in 1995, we have conducted over 150 funded research projects. These projects were possible because of the support from Shriners Hospitals for Children Research Advisory Board and Kosair Charities, along with a few other private foundations, totaling $7.5 million. Equaling the funded research projects, we have also done almost 150 unfunded research projects. All of these projects combined have resulted in 390 scientific presentations to national and international conferences and in 144 publications to scientific journals.

In one such example of a project, SHCMC-Lexington looked at children less than 5 years old with early onset scoliosis. Screening MRIs are recommended for these children to rule out defects of the brain and spinal cord, however, this screening is not without cost or risk. MRI evaluation of the spine adds cost to the health care system and is time consuming. Perhaps most importantly, the MRI must be done under anesthesia. There is risk each time a patient undergoes anesthesia, so limiting the frequency of MRI evaluations would be very beneficial. We looked at 53 patients who were under the age of 5 and had early onset scoliosis. All of these patients had been screened with MRI. When we compared those patients that had an abnormal finding to those that didn’t, we found that a curve of 30 degrees was the threshold value for patients with abnormal MRI findings and that those patients with a curve larger than this were 27 times more likely to have an abnormal MRI result than those whose curve was less than 30 degrees. We are now able to use this curve size of 30 degrees as a threshold that can be used to help determine the timing of MRI screening. For those patients with no unusual findings on x-rays or physical exam, and who have a curve less than 30 degrees, MRI screening may be delayed until the curve progresses above 30 degrees. Based on these results, of the 53 patients we looked at, 20 fewer children would have had MRIs, removing anesthesia risks for the child and decreasing financial costs to families and our institution.

Each research project done here is driven by the viewpoint of “patient and family first.” No matter the question, the goal is to help to continually improve the exceptional healthcare we provide here at SHCMC-Lexington. At SHCMC-Lexington, research matters because our patients and families matter.
